independent artists really can so easily be just some of the most selfcentered and defensively hostile people youll ever meet. i'll never forget in one of my early early convention days, when i was tabling, it was i think either before the con had opened or i was just making my rounds and chatting with someone at their booth because i liked their stuff. she had this little prize wheel you could spin after a purchase and it was the first time i'd seen anyone do that kind of thing at a convention, it was to me associated with like corporate booths at summer festivals or whatever. anyway we were chatting and i brought up the wheel and complimented it and then afterwards i said something along the lines of "its a good idea, i might steal that for my next one!" and she got dead fucking serious and just went "well, don't."
as if she had some meaningful ownership over the concept of letting people spin a little wheel at your booth. and i would be infringing upon her business venture by doing so myself three states away the next time around.
anyway theres a ton about selling at conventions and stuff thats a ton of fun and i do miss and a lot of great people in those spaces as well. there are plenty of people who do think of everyone being in it together and are willing to freely share their ideas, techniques, and friendship among their peers. but it's also a breeding ground for people who have the temperament and worldview of instagram influencers but think the fact that they are artsy ~burnt out gifted kids~ makes them the lovable underdog. and it feels like those people are running the show now that everyone with a more humble approach has been priced out of the scene entirely
i actually don't think it's a bad faith nonequivalent argument to point out that artists are perfectly capable of holding a moral stance about what they will produce and sell when it comes to AI, but not when it comes to gambling or sweatshop labor. i can't really imagine why being righteously opposed to AI is just natural regardless of whatever hypothetical financial benefits could be gained from it, but expecting a similar stance towards extractive business practices or exploitative labor conditions is some sort of unbelievably high bar to meet. Why? Can anyone explain to me why other than pure, naked self interest from artists that AI is a more legitimate moral concern than those other two things?
I often see AI discussion framed too much in terms of creative integrity and not enough in how damaging it is to the environment. While I dislike AI from a creative standpoint, this doesn't anger me all that much. It's far more the sheer audacity of destroying lots and lots and lots of water and critical natural resources for the sake of generating funny images.
One explanation I can offer for the baffling contradiction you have put forward is that it's an easier fight. It is much easier to challenge and shut down AI on a personal level than it is to overhaul the ecosystems that many artists depend on to sell, especially in chains where they are ordering items to be produced across the world.
However, even with it being difficult to rule out exploitative labour, it should be the minimum bar to meet when producing goods. If you are using a supply chain that uses exploitative labour, you should expect to be challenged in this regard and eat shit. You should do some research into the chain you are using and find the best alternative. If you are refusing to do that then what the fuck and also any opinions you have with regards to AI are completely worthless and irrelevant.
one of the best jokes in I See You Aizawa-san is that there's a male character in the main friend group but only just sort of in theory, no one dislikes him but you get the sense that the girls are just kind of passively letting him hang out in the general area (one of the girls refers to him as "Boy"), and in one of the scariest most game-changing chapters he's very casually revealed to have two moms
For those wondering here's the panel
The funniest part is just how casual this is. Like, Seta-san's two defining traits are "Theater kid" and "Superstitious and deathly afraid of ghosts" and the other girls just vibe with him and let him hang out with them. He hasn't done anything important, he's not really relevant to the plot, usually he's not even the butt of any jokes, he's just there and the girls just let him hang around.
Their friend group is pretty much "Weird lesbians plus Steve Seta" and that makes the reveal that he has two moms way funnier.
I'm still convinced Seta's an egg.

I See You Aizawa-san has finally been licensed so here is my post telling you to please please please read it. what starts out as a silly horror-themed comedy unfolds over time into a really well-foreshadowed mystery with some seriously chilling moments of horror. i think fans of The Summer Hikaru Died or I Want To Hold Aono-kun So Badly I Could Die would really enjoy it, but if you like yuri, horror or just manga in general, i seriously think you should give it a try!!!
HUGE DELTARUNE THEORY. BIG IF TRUE.
I am doing it. I am fighting my brain and its shitty attention and memory issues to CATCH UP WITH THIS COMIC'S ARCHIVE after years of trying and then fucking forgetting where I left off.
Oh goodness it's so good I love it so much.
Hi please read A Ghost Story if you are into disastrously human protagonists getting into deep paranormal trouble.

Toby Fox i respect you but you're not going to make me feel guilty for thinking Ralsei's Chapter 1 design is cool
comic about chainsmoker cat
honestly i think we kind of lost the plot on "therapy speak" as a bit of media criticism
i swear it used to refer to a story using a very formal, almost workplace safety-type tone of dialogue that's unintentionally jarring in context and feels like the writer is trying to make extra sure the characters come off as healthy and nice even though the language doesn't make sense contextually, now it seems to frequently refer to characters having any conversation about their feelings at all or even stories that are about therapy/are deliberately evoking that sort of verbage throughout as a stylistic choice. very odd.
hmm in retrospect maybe Noelle’s recollection of an incident where she saw Susie physically threaten Kris, in which she made unsubtle references to a desire to be the one being threatened with violence, should have been a clue that there was something going on with her (and that something was a bit deeper than “Noelle is a stupid idiot lesbian whose stupid idiot lesbian infatuation is making her a bad friend”)

starting the countdown until gaylors start saying that Adam Sandler officiating Taylor's wedding (sorry if this is how you found out) is actually proof that it's a sham because it's a reference to I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry (2007), in which Sandler and Kevin James play heterosexual men who enter a mutually beneficial fake gay marriage, a dynamic that Taylor is inverting as a queer woman pretending to be straight while cleverly flagging the obvious farce to those with the eyes to see
And now, a comic about experiencing trans joy through creation. Take it away, Mettaton!
Spread the love! Even a spammy long nosed doll deserves a chance to feel like himself.
This comic got a little long, but I do have a bonus lol (and some yapping)
Taking in a lot of the themes about creation in deltarune and thinking about Pink in chapter 5 had me thinking about her cousin and how he’d want to get in on making his dream come true as well (who wouldn’t?). It would be nice if MTT and Tenna could come to Castletown with Pink in chapter 6, but we’ll just have to wait and see.
I puzzled over drawing Pink as another ghost in the early part of the comic since ghosts in utdr lore dubiously can’t un-possess a vessel once they’ve chosen/bonded with it, and post-ch5, she’s possessing Asgore’s Mew Mew figurine, BUT for the sake of emoting/gesturing and showing her and MTT coming from the same place, I just had her as her ghost form. One last “HEY GUYS IM MOVING. GONNA GO LIVE AS MY REAL SELF BYE” before she’s gone. Gotta get her goodies, you know? And take her depressed cousin with her.
When MTT and Ralsei meet in the comic, I had Ralsei ask his name and pronouns, not only because it’s a first introduction and Ralsei is polite like that, but because he’s sensitive to the emotions of the Lightners. I also just like to see this greeting expressed in media because it should be so normal and natural, but with certain people in my life (even not explicitly anti-trans people) it turns a conversation tense or awkward. There’s nothing weird or wrong with asking someone’s preferred name and pronouns! And as a trans person, it doesn’t feel awkward to receive the question if it’s out of genuine respect and curiosity to get to know me. In fact, (like MTT in the comic) I’d be pleased to be extended that question in an introductory conversation. It’s no big deal to answer, just like answering “what’s your name?” Or “what are your hobbies?” It’s just another part of me, my gender identity. Nothing to be afraid of!
As for trans Ralsei, I see that trans coding within that goat… I don’t know what his gender identity is (since it seems even Ralsei has not figured that out about himself yet), but it’s there. Maybe we’ll see him explore more about himself, what he likes, who he feels he needs to be, and who he wants to be. And maybe Ralsei will realize she’s a girl or that they’re nonbinary (my personal headcanon leans Ralsei demigender—demigirl, demiboy, idk. But some kind of in-between) But that’s for Ralsei to figure out! I can only speculate… Whatever happens next for Ralsei, I hope he comes to love himself as an individual.
And Spamton. He enters the comic since he also has ties to MTT, but like with the rest of his life, he’s excluded, and worse, defeated by the reality of his world. It’s fiction, all of it. You might be able to draw the perfect you, might be able to imagine a body that would perfectly align with who you really are, but it’s all imaginary. An image. A dream. He’s trans despair (at least in this comic) for that discrepancy between body and mind that will always remain in some degree. His despair is the same as Mettaton’s despair, who narrates alongside Spamton’s visuals. They’re in unison there because they’ve both experienced the same feeling, only now with the help, care, support, and love of his community, Mettaton is able to feel more like himself—the true him through creation. It might be an imaginary Dark World, but it came to life with the love they all share, with the excitement they bring together to see Mettaton’s dream come to reality. When he leaves Castletown, he might just be a drawing of a fancy body, and Pink may just be a figure of a catgirl, but everyone they love helped them feel more themselves than they have their entire lives. And that made their real selves a reality.
And THAT’s why you share the pen with Spamton. He may be little and weird, you may not know him very well, but wouldn’t you have wanted that olive branch extended to you? Wouldn’t you have wanted someone to hand you the pen and tell you “I see you.”
So yeah I’m trans and I love Deltarune. White quill of hope? Hell nah. Me and my homies got the black pen of being 🔥TRANSGENDER🔥
