when valjean finds out cosette has a half-brother on her fathers side named enjolras, he invites the boy over for dinner and is astounded to find amazing similarities between the two- their shining curls, their striking eyes (albeit different colours), their laughs, and their fervent passion for local and federal politics and social justice
valjean loves him instantly (how could he not, heās practically a male replica of his beloved daughter), and soon enjolras and jvj are spending days at a time together, along with cosette, and they discuss everything, have lighthearted banter and debates, sing and dance and laugh their hearts out and love each other to no end.
one christmas eve valjean comes home to a bunch of college kids sitting around his kitchen. cosette and enjolras anxiously tell him that these are their friends, who had nowhere to go for christmas and no family to spend it with, and so they said they could stay here, because the house is more than big enough, and can they stay dad, please??
so valjean has his kids write down each of their friends names and something they like and takes the list to the mall and itās almost impossible but by the end of the night heās got a little present for everyone, and he cooks a huge christmas feast with their help (turns out marius and courfeyrac are absolute wizards in the kitchen) and they sit around and drink and eat and laugh and exhange gifts (a few of the amis picked up āhost presentsā for valjean when cosette and enjolras said they could stay with him) and just have the best old time
Marius plays the piano and grantaire plays the guitar and they all sing āhave yourself a merry little Christmasā and āmr. fauchelevent why are you cryingā
valjean decides that he now has 14 kids total. he blows his nose into a hanky and tearfully says āeveryone, stay as long as you want, im overjoyed that youāre all here, please, consider me your family from this holiday onwards.ā
the amis start calling him ādadā as a joke to begin with, but soon enough it just feels so natural to them that he becomes everyoneās dad and he truly couldnāt be happier or love them more. he discusses politics and law with combeferre and listens to jehan read him poetry and arm wrestles with bahorel and has drinks with grantaire and buys gavroche new school shoes
when he learns that Marius and cosette are dating, as are enjolras and grantaire, heās frustrated because he loves them all and doesnāt know which one to threaten into keeping the other safe
from then on, every holiday is spent at valjeanās house, and itās a big family event filled with love, laughter and joy for all involved
