This red gown will be seen in the upcoming 2026 𝑷𝒓𝒊𝒅𝒆 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑷𝒓𝒆𝒋𝒖𝒅𝒊𝒄𝒆, worn by Emma Corrin as Elizabeth Bennet. But the gown didn’t get its start there - it was actually first seen in the 2018 Andrew Davies adaptation of 𝑳𝒆𝒔 𝑴𝒊𝒔é𝒓𝒂𝒃𝒍𝒆𝒔, where it was worn by Ayoola Smart as Zéphine. “Every man carries his own darkness.” — Victor Hugo
“You’ve Got A Chain On Me”
Toy Story (1995) × Les Misérables (2012)
by Andréçe Bonnefashieu
⚠️ SPOILER WARNING ⚠️
Woody is Valjean. Both begin as men defined by ownership. Valjean by the 24601 on his skin, Woody by the name on his boot. They are marked property who mistake devotion for duty, convinced that worth comes from serving the master who once imprisoned them. When Buzz falls from the sky, Woody meets his Fantine: a mirror for his own fragility, someone he must both save and suppress. His desperate insistence that “You. Are. A. Toy!” echoes Valjean’s insistence that Fantine’s suffering can be contained, disciplined, redeemed — as if control could undo cruelty.
“This woman leaves behind a suffering child
There is none but me who can intercede
In mercy’s name, three days are all I need…”
Sid is Javert. He enforces the laws of the toy world with the same obsessive righteousness, destroying and dissecting in the name of order. For Sid, a toy’s sin is to act alive; for Javert, a sinner’s crime is to act redeemed. Both see defiance as a grave error. Something unnatural that must be corrected. Their moral systems collapse the moment their prey looks them in the eye.
When the toys rise up against Sid, it’s their “Do You Hear The People Sing?”. Unlike the June Rebellion, the toys’ revolt isn’t only a political one, but rather an existential one.
“It is the music of a people who will not be slaves again”
When Sid runs screaming, when Andy comes home, and when Valjean dies peacefully in a convent, Both films end with their heroes accepting the same exact message— freedom is not earned by escaping love, but rather embracing it.
