Here I am once again on the beach in Gaeta! I'm stretched out on a beach chair with my laptop balanced on my knees. The sea sparkles before me, waves gently rolling onto the shore while children laugh in the distance and seagulls enthusiastically add their own commentary. Dopo tre giorni meravigliosi, anche se decisamente caldi, trascorsi a Napoli, mi sto concedendo una settimana di puro relax. Uno dei momenti più belli è stato sedermi nello storico Caffè Gambrinus con uno shakerato, immaginando Ricciardi seduto a pochi tavoli di distanza, immerso nei suoi pensieri. By now you know how much I love Maurizio de Giovanni's Commissario Ricciardi novels. Walking those same streets felt like stepping into the pages of the books. One of my favorite moments was sitting inside the historic Caffè Gambrinus, enjoying a shakerato while imagining Ricciardi quietly sitting a few tables away. Ma questa volta un'altra protagonista ha catturato la mia attenzione: Partenope. This time, however, another protagonist completely captured my imagination: Partenope. Il suo nome compariva ovunque. Fantasmi, omicidi e Lino Guanciale: cavalcando l'onda delle fiction RaiPlay Ghosts, Murders, and Lino Guanciale: Riding the RaiPlay Italian TV Wave Tutto è cominciato con Ricciardi, e do la colpa a Maurizio de Giovanni. It All Started with Ricciardi, and I Blame Maurizio de Giovanni Da quando ho visto Il Commissario Ricciardi su RaiPlay l'anno scorso, durante il mio soggiorno in Italia, ho sviluppato una piccola cotta televisiva. Non solo per il malinconico commissario napoletano degli anni Trenta creato da Maurizio de Giovanni, ma anche per l'attore che gli dà vita sullo schermo: Lino Guanciale. Ever since I watched Il Commissario Ricciardi on RaiPlay during my stay in Italy last year, I've developed a small television crush. Not only on the melancholy Neapolitan detective from the 1930s created by Maurizio de Giovanni, but also on the actor who brings him to life: Lino Guanciale. Fino a quel momento non avevo mai sentito parlare di lui. Ma come avevo fatto a non accorgermene? Adesso che “lo conosco”, mi sembra di vederlo dappertutto… persino nel mio feed di Instagram! Del resto, negli ultimi anni Guanciale è diventato uno dei volti più riconoscibili della televisione italiana, passando con disinvoltura dalle commedie romantiche ai drammi storici e ai gialli. Until then, I had never even heard of him. How had I managed to overlook him? Now that I “know” him, he seems to appear everywhere I look… even in my Instagram feed! In fact, over the past few years, Guanciale has become one of the most recognizable faces on Italian television, moving effortlessly from romantic comedies to historical dramas and crime series. Lino Guanciale — Un nome davvero curioso Lino Guanciale — A Name That Makes Me Laugh Trovo piuttosto divertente che il nome "Lino Guanciale" tradotto letteralmente in inglese suoni come Linen Pillowcase oppure persino Linen Bacon. Dopotutto, in italiano il guanciale può essere sia la fodera di un cuscino sia il celebre salume ricavato dalla guancia del maiale. I find it rather amusing that the name "Lino Guanciale," translated literally into English, sounds something like Linen Pillowcase or even Linen Bacon. After all, guanciale in Italian can mean either a pillowcase or the famous cured pork cheek used in dishes like carbonara. Ma poi mi ricordo che noi americani non troviamo affatto strano un attore che si chiama Kevin Bacon. Figurati! Then I remember that Americans don't think twice about an actor named Kevin Bacon. Go figure! Quando il morto non è mai davvero fuori scena (o lo piccolo schermo) When the Dead Are Never Really Out of the Picture (or the TV screen) L'anno scorso, una volta tornata negli Stati Uniti, mi sono procurata una VPN per continuare a guardare RaiPlay e da lì è iniziata una vera e propria maratona Guanciale. Dopo Ricciardi, ho visto tutte e tre le stagioni di Non dirlo al mio capo con Vanessa Incontrada, che tra l'altro interpreta anche una commissaria in una serie ambientata proprio qui ad Arezzo. Poi è stata la volta di Beautiful Minds, la serie di interviste realizzata da Guanciale durante il periodo del Covid, seguita da La Porta Rossa, L'Allieva e infine La Dama Velata. Last year, after returning to the United States, I signed up for a VPN so I could keep watching RaiPlay, and thus began my full-fledged Guanciale marathon. After Ricciardi, I watched all three seasons of Non dirlo al mio capo with Vanessa Incontrada, who, incidentally, also stars as a police detective in a series set right here in Arezzo. Then came Beautiful Minds, Guanciale’s Covid-era interview series, followed by La Porta Rossa, L’Allieva, and finally La Dama Velata. In queste serie, mi diverte moltissimo vedere come Lino Guanciale riesca a muoversi dentro universi simili, fatti di delitti, fantasmi, indizi e misteri, cambiando però completamente ruolo ogni volta. Non interpreta mai lo stesso tipo di personaggio: passa dal commissario tormentato che vede i morti, al detective fantasma che indaga sul proprio omicidio, al medico legale che legge i segreti lasciati dai corpi, fino all’uomo accusato di aver ucciso la moglie, che poi, sorpresa sorpresa, ricompare viva e pronta a scoprire la verità. What I find so entertaining in these series is watching how Lino Guanciale moves through similar worlds of crime, ghosts, clues, and mystery, while completely changing roles each time. He never plays the same kind of character: he goes from the tormented detective who sees the dead, to the ghost detective investigating his own murder, to the forensic doctor reading the secrets left behind by bodies, and finally to the man accused of killing his wife, who then, surprise surprise, reappears alive and ready to uncover the truth. Non dirlo al Mio Capo Don't Tell My Boss In Non dirlo al mio capo, Guanciale interpreta Enrico Vinci, un avvocato brillante, affascinante e non sempre facilissimo da gestire. Accanto a lui arriva Lisa, la nuova praticante interpretata da Vanessa Incontrada, che nasconde una piccola, enorme bugia sulla propria famiglia pur di ottenere il lavoro. Tra battibecchi, segreti e tensioni romantiche, i due finiscono per risolvere casi, misteri e persino omicidi. In Non dirlo al mio capo, Guanciale plays Enrico Vinci, a brilliant, charming lawyer who is not always easy to handle. Alongside him comes Lisa, the new hire played by Vanessa Incontrada, who hides one small, enormous lie about her family in order to get the job. Between witty clashes, secrets, and romantic tension, the two end up solving cases, mysteries, and even murders. La storia è ambientata a Trento, un dettaglio che ha reso la visione ancora più piacevole per me. Non seguo solo la trama: cerco volti familiari, attori che cambiano pelle e perfino autori nascosti in piccoli cameo. Il mondo della TV italiana mi sembra piccolo, ma proprio per questo affascinante. The fun continued thisweekend at Arezzo's famous Antique Fair, where I spent nearly the entire day wandering through the city. The longer I stay in Italy, the more convinced I become that learning a language is about far more than grammar. It means collecting experiences, having spontaneous conversations, listening to stories, exploring markets, tasting new foods, and allowing yourself to be surprised. "Mi è saltato all’occhio"  "Mi è saltato all’occhio" è un'espressione molto comune in italiano. Letteralmente significa "it jumped into my eye," ma in realtà significa: "It caught my eye." It's often used when something stands out unexpectedly and immediately grabs your attention. Quel vestito mi è saltato all'occhio appena sono entrata nel negozio. In fact, those fabulous gold Prada platform sandals (pictured above) really "jumped out at me" (mi sono saltate all'occhio), and I kind of really wanted them! LOL You can use this expression for much more than clothes. A painting, a beautiful building, a vintage Vespa, a colorful market stall, or even a handsome stranger can also saltare all'occhio! I’m happy to tell you that I arrived safely in Arezzo after a smooth trip. Everything went like clockwork! I’ve been here for a week now, reconnecting with friends, settling back into my Italian routines, and organizing things in my apartment just around the corner from Piazza Grande. Yesterday, while admiring the view, I found myself thinking about a question one of my students had asked me a few days earlier about indirect object pronouns. Così ho deciso di scrivere un piccolo articolo per aiutare tutti a capire meglio come funzionano queste piccole pesti della grammatica italiana. So I decided to write a little article to help everyone better understand these tiny troublemakers of Italian grammar. Prima di tutto: la differenza tra i pronomi diretti e i pronomi indiretti. First of All: The Difference Between Direct & Indirect Object Pronouns. Probabilmente conoscete già i pronomi diretti: lo, la, li, le. Questi sostituiscono una persona o una cosa che riceve direttamente l'azione del verbo. You probably already know direct object pronouns: lo, la, li, le. These replace a person or thing directly receiving the action of the verb. Compro il libro. → Lo compro. Vedo le ragazze. → Le vedo. PRONOMI INDIRETTI: Da "a lui" a "gli" INDIRECT OBJECT PRONOUNS: From "To Him" to "Gli" I pronomi indiretti, invece, sostituiscono una persona introdotta dalla preposizione a. Indirect object pronouns, on the other hand, replace a person introduced by the preposition "a." Parlo a Laura -----> I speak to Maria Parlo al professore. -----> I speak to the professor Parlo a lui. -----> I speak to him Parlo a lei. -----> I speak to her Parlo a noi -----> I speak to us Parlo a voi -----> I speak to you all In italiano possiamo mantenere la costruzione con a + persona, ma molto più spesso utilizziamo un pronome indiretto. In Italian we can keep the structure with "a + person," but much more often we use an indirect object pronoun. The traditional form is: Ho detto loro la verità. I told them the truth. Notice that "loro" normally comes after the verb and there is no preposition "a". But in the spoken language you will often here: Gli ho detto la verità. I told them the truth. This plural "gli" is now extremely common in spoken Italian. Quando usiamo i pronomi indiretti? Quando diamo i fiori naturalmente! When To Use Indirect Object Pronouns? When we give flowers of course! Imparare i pronomi in sé è abbastanza semplice. La parte più difficile è capire quali verbi italiani li richiedono naturalmente. Ecco una breve lista di verbi comuni che spesso usano i pronomi indiretti: Learning the pronouns themselves is fairly straightforward. The trickier part is knowing which Italian verbs naturally call for them. Here’s a short list of common verbs that often use indirect object pronouns: Verbi di dare e offrire Verbs of Giving and Offering dare → Gli do un libro. regalare → Le regalo dei fiori. offrire → Ti offro un caffè. prestare → Mi presti la tua penna? consegnare → Hanno consegnato loro i documenti. mandare/spedire → Ci hanno mandato una cartolina. Many common verbs require an indirect object pronoun even though this isn't always obvious to English speakers. Mi sembra una buona idea. Ci manca molto la nonna. Ti serve una mano? Gli interessa la politica. Non mi basta il tempo. Ci dispiace per l'incidente. Mi è successo qualcosa di strano. Ti capita spesso di viaggiare? Il primo pronome indiretto che avete imparato senza saperlo. The First Indirect Object Pronound You Learned Without Realizing It. C'è una buona probabilità che il primo pronome indiretto che abbiate mai usato in italiano sia stato con il verbo piacere. There's a good chance that the first indirect object pronoun you ever used in Italian was with the verb "piacere." Mi piace il gelato. I like icecream Ti piacciono le canzoni italiane. You like Italian songs. fyi: multiple things liked — take "piacicono" (they are liked to me) Le piace viaggiare. She likes traveling Per un madrelingua inglese questa costruzione sembra strana, perché in inglese "we like things." For an English speaker, this construction feels unusual because in English "we like things." In Italian, the idea is closer to: "The thing is pleasing to me." For this reason we say: Mi piace il gelato. Literally: "Il gelato piace a me" — Ice cream is pleasing to me. Piccoli pronomi, grande potere Small Pronouns, Big Power I pronomi indiretti sono piccoli, ma fanno un lavoro enorme. Indirect object pronouns are tiny, but they do a tremendous amount of work. Learn the pattern that goes with it. If the verb naturally requires "to someone", it will probably use an indirect object pronoun in Italian. Parlare → to speak to someone Telefonare → to telephone "TO" someone Rispondere → to answer someone Scrivere → to write to someone Dire → to say to someone Chiedere → to ask someone for something The more you learn verbs together with their prepositions and sentence patterns, the less you'll have to think about grammar rules and you will naturally start saying: Gli parlo. → I speak to him. Le telefono. → I call her. Ti rispondo. → I'm answering you. Vi scrivo domani. → I'll write to you tomorrow. As always, the week before departure is a little whirlwind: I’m packing my suitcase at full speed! Organizing everything takes patience, a bit of strategy, and maybe even a memory of steel. But some things, as they say, simply can’t be done all at once. Tengo le dita incrociate che il viaggio proceda senza intoppi e che io riesca finalmente ad arrivare in Toscana… anche dopo aver passato una notte in bianco per l’emozione. Luckily, at this point, everything seems to be going smoothly. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the trip goes off without a hitch and that I finally make it to Tuscany… even after spending a sleepless night from excitement. And then there’s this gem: “don't be a shinbone of a saint.” Italians use it to describe someone who isn’t exactly innocent or perfect. Perché “stinco”? Perché “santo”? In Italia, i giochi non sono soltanto un passatempo. Sono teatro, strategia, dramma, vendetta, fortuna… e a volte anche un po’ di caos familiare durante le vacanze di Natale. Dagli scacchi alle carte, gli italiani amano giocare, discutere sulle regole, accusare qualcuno di aver barato… e naturalmente vincere. In Italy, games are not just a pastime. They are theater, strategy, drama, revenge, luck… and sometimes a little family chaos during Christmas holidays. From chess to card games, Italians love to play, argue about the rules, accuse someone of cheating… and naturally, win. Scacco Matto! Il linguaggio degli scacchi  Checkmate! The language of chess La parola più teatrale degli scacchi in italiano? Scacco matto! The most theatrical chess expression in Italian? Scacco matto!  Sembra quasi il titolo di un’opera lirica: il re è intrappolato, la regina osserva trionfante, il cavallo scalpita, la torre blocca ogni via di fuga… e tutto il regno trattiene il respiro.
