Notes on Didn't I Say to Make My Abilities Average in the Next Life?! Vol. 1 by FUNA
and illustrated by Itsuki Akata
That's right! I managed to read more fiction in less than a week! Go me! Also there's 19 volumes in the series, so, uh, I'm not going to be super careful about spoilers. Especially because this volume very much felt like it's the set up/prelude for the rest of the series.
Revisiting at 9 volumes in!
Volume 1 was definitely all about setting up several long term plot threads. Mile does settle down into a particular persona rather than identity hopping, but her personality stays pretty consistent.
The narrative of the book occasionally gets a little infodumptastic, and I can't always decide if the tone is friendly and helpful, or kind of condescending.
There is an odd flavor of sexism running through the background as well, due to the all-girl adventuring party constantly being both underestimated and pursued by male characters. The trope plays out like it's expected in this sort of setting, so maybe I just haven't read enough Japanese isekai?
Anyway, off to request volume 10 from the library!
Revisiting several more volumes in!
I should have done this sooner. The first major storyline wraps up around Volume 18? I think 18. Looking at the cover pictures maybe it was 17. I don't think it was 19.
Anyway, what I'm trying to say is that the second major story arc was... it kinda felt like an epilogue or something? But it somehow lost whatever bit of charm got me through the first arc. Part of the problem was definitely that I was thoroughly sick of the not-exactly-setting-appropriate sexism that kept popping up, or the weird obsession with boobs that it seemed like every character had.
I dunno, maybe I would have been less annoyed if I hadn't been sort of binging it instead of reading it at a pace more similar to how it's been coming out. At any rate, I'm not going back to read more. Nor am I likely to ever reread it.
Notes on Growing Your Own Tea Garden by Jodi Helmer
I don't have the space to garden, or much experience with it. But I really like tea! And I figured that other people might find this book interesting if they knew it existed.
Notes on The Mending Directory by Erin Eggenburg
You know what I realized recently? Books on mending don't have very creative titles. I'm pretty sure I didn't blog about this one before? Like, I think I'd remember the iron-on transfers.
Notes on No Fear Sock Knitting by Denise DeSantis
Oh, I didn't realize this until I started working on this post, but this author also has an absolutely lovely youtube channel called EarthtonesGirlpodcast. I just didn't connect the names until I actually looked at the authors note.

The Fantasy Romans book, at last
So excited to reveal the cover to my new book today, The Wisdom of Emperors! You can check it out on Kickstarter, along with the full summary!
Inspired by the story of the Ancient Roman emperor Hadrian and his lover Antinous, The Wisdom of Emperors is a second-world adult fantasy novel written in the style of a fictional academic text. It documents the translation and study of a world-changing artifact discovered in an archaeological dig: a manuscript which provides the clues to finally unravel the mysteries surrounding one of the most famous emperors of the ancient world.
The Kickstarter campaign is for the deluxe collector's edition, but you'll be able to preorder the standard hardback/paperback, PLUS the early-access ebook, available to backers well before general publication to everyone else. And there's going to be some really, REALLY cool merch as well (genuine papyrus bookmarks, designed and blockprinted by my own hands!)
Anyway, the Kickstarter goes live on May 5th at 4:00pm EST, so if you are the sort of person who reads news articles about major new archaeological discoveries and gets SUPER MAD that they don't tell you absolutely everything about why it's important and what it changes about what we thought we knew..... this one's for you, babe. ;)
Also I was told by a publishing industry insider that this book probably wouldn't sell because publishers are explicitly saying that they don't want "challenging" books, they want books that (and i QUOTE) "aren't necessarily making readers think"
So if that pisses you the FUCK off, sauce me a signal boost.
Notes on The Little Gothic Bakeshop by Helena Garcia
I wanted to like this book so badly that I stalled for weeks on actually writing this. But it's got some flaws that drive me batty.
Notes on Happy Feet by Cathy Carron
Sock knitting! My favorite craft project to forever plan and never do!
Notes on Delicious Japanese Street Eats by Laure Kié
Look at that. I remembered how to do the accent marks to get the author's name right! Anyway, onto the food. I mean recipes. I mean book. Why do I always do the cookbooks when I'm hungry?
Pretty in Punk: 25 Punk, Rock and Goth Knitting Projects by Alyce Benevides and Jaqueline Milles
I've been sitting on this one for a while, because I have feelings about this instead of thoughts. It took me a while to find the words. I'll try to get the facty stuff first, and the ranting second. But I'm also taking this back to the library in about 30 minutes....

THIS BOOK IS SO PRETTY
Notes on The Spinner's Book of Fleece by Beth Smith
This is a book about fiber. And it's about what fiber does what when you spin it. If you want a book to get you started? Look somewhere else. But if you think you have the wrong fiber to get the kind of yarn you want? Oh, this might be what you need.
Notes on Respect the Spindle by Abby Franquemont
So basically, if someone wants to learn spinning with a drop spindle from a book? This is the book for that.
Notes on Braided Heritage by Jessica B. Harris
So I grabbed this one from the new release section when I was in a hurry. Spoiler: it's really about Southern and Cajun food, not a more general look at American cuisine.
Notes on Boba Cook Book by Wendy Leung
I think this is the last boba book I requested from my library, but I wouldn't be surprised if I find more. Anywho, onto the opinions!

Notes on Bitter by Alexina Anatole
This is a new release! And it's the author's debut book, but also first in a series about different flavors.
Notes on Spin Control by Amy King
I meant to post my comments on this one during Tour de Fleece, but oh well. I was distracted by other things. Anywho, this book on spinning was published in 2009, which... I think matches up with the first time I got interested in spinning my own yarns.
