I am a 911 operator. People call in ridiculous things all the time. I'm not talking about someone calling to report that they're home alone and they think someone is in their attic, only for us to discover that there are squirrels in the roof -- we actually get that sort of call somewhat often and it's ALWAYS worth a check, so never feel bad about calling for something that ends up not being an emergency! No, I'm talking about someone calling 911 because Ulta won't give them a refund on used cosmetics or some bullshit like that. That kind of call is annoying, but it is what it is.

But the wildlife calls...

"There's a deer in my yard! Is it injured? Well, no, ma'am, but that's not the problem. Can't you get someone out here to remove it?" No.

Or "I'm the president of the HOA here and one of the homeowners is letting all these weeds grow instead of mowing their lawn. Maybe you could send an officer over here to give them a chat?" No.

Or "There's a fox in my neighborhood! No, no, it's acting normal and I only see it in the evening...but ma'am, this is a gated neighborhood, and it's a nuisance!" No.

This is all the proof you need that the death penalty is about state power and not about justice or crime prevention.

Carolina Milanesi, an independent technology analyst, said Google is trying to make its cash cow business — search — richer and more personalized, and it will make shopping easier. But there is a risk that users may have fewer choices about what to click. "Right now it's: I ask a question, I get a bunch of answers and I feel that I'm in control as to which answer I take, or if I'm looking for something, which product I'm going to end up buying. That is going to be less so going forward," she said. Milanesi envisions AI-enabled search and agents proposing products to consumers — perhaps even those they have requested — but with less clarity or choice around where it's coming from. "If you're going to say: 'I want a pair of Jordans, go find them,' you're not necessarily sure what steps have been taken and whether the AI has used a source or a store that was paid for and therefore came up in the search results," she said, "or if AI actually went and did their due diligence and picked the best for me as a customer."

While Google already has “AI Mode,” the company will now power the whole search bar through its new Gemini 3.5 Flash model.  Instead of the classic list of blue links, Google Search will now also generate a custom page with an AI-generated summary of what you’re searching about, which will then trigger a conversation with AI Mode on the main page, allowing users to ask follow-up questions—similar to the kind of layout you would see when opening ChatGPT.

don't do this. don't use genAI. even if your professors give you permission. even if they ask for it or suggest it. if they do anything short of directly requiring it (and I weep, because I've already seen assignments that require it) don't touch that crap. if they do require it, stick it to them. be as maliciously compliant as possible. be a nightmare.

I know it might sound easier right now -- just plug in your assignment and get the answers. you don't care about this class anyway, it's not for your major, you don't see the value of the assignment.

but for your own sake, for the sake of your education and mind, and for the sake of the future world we want to have: learn the stuff. you are not as stupid as the corporate bizzaro kings who want to rule the world think you are, so don't give them reasons to believe it.

and odds are good genAI is gonna give you corrupted info anyway -- more and moreso as the machines cannibalize themselves.

You people let an abuser, Johnny Depp, use the court system to continue to abuse a survivor. You allowed for her RAPE TESTIMONY to become a tiktok audio for laughs. You willingly participated in an event that single handedly took back whatever advances society made during the Me Too movement.
