Exploring Karrin Murphy has been interesting. I love fleshing out the characters and seeing where it leads. Karrin dealing with her sister and ex-husband/brother-in-law makes for some interesting family drama.Â

Unraveling
What is my purpose? I pull at that thread and sigh. It gets longer and I wonder where I should go next. It doesn’t stop coming and I get worried. I had plans for my life. A job, a family, a house. Each plan unloops as I pull. Those plans are no longer part of the fabric in front of me.
“Ms. Smith, would you like some more water?” The nurse asks.
I look up from the yarn in my lap and smile, “yes please.”
The IV behind me beeps as the medication is dispensed. I pull another row of stitches out of the scarf and think of all the possibilities that are no longer.
I am tired, so tired, yet this thread that has unravelled on my lap holds different possibilities, different paths. I look around at the others here who are watching their threads unravel, and I see opportunities to love. Opportunities to share hope.
I turn to the young woman next to me. “Hello, would you like to learn to crochet?”
Lost and Found
Irene woke up to rain pelting her tent. “What made me think that I could do a three-day backpacking trip at the age of fifty?” She muttered.
She sighed not wanting to face a wet breakfast. She wondered if anyone else was up yet. No scent of fresh brewed coffee. No voices. Only the sound of rain and wind. What if they left her? A vibration ran up her spine, and she slowly opened a crack in the tent zipper.
The clearing was empty. No people. No tents. She was alone! She hugged her knees to her chest as the emptiness pressed in. She felt a surge of panicked breaths.
Joanna’s voice echoed through the fog of panic. “Box Breathing, Irene.” Her therapist said, putting a hand over Irene’s. “Breathe in for four counts, hold for four and release for four and repeat.”
The simple ritual slowed her heart and steadied her breathing. Irene struggled into her jacket, and crawled out of the tent. Nothing around her looked familiar. The trees encircling the clearing were smaller, less dense than they seemed last night. The ground was less worn, grass and wildflowers surrounded her tent instead of bare ground. Behind her was a small stone chapel. Ivy covered walls seemed to grow out of the rock behind it. It had not been there last night when they set up.
Irene was wet and hungry, and despite her fear she grabbed her pack and shoes from the tent and ran to the shelter of the little church.
The wooden door opened more easily than she expected, and she stumbled through the door. The damp, musty smell of the old building assaulted her nose. When her eyes adjusted to the light seeping through the narrow stained glass windows she noticed the church was devoid of pews. There was a cross and altar at the far side of the building. She jumped as the door slammed behind her.
At least she was out of the rain now. She was still dripping wet, but the lack of wind kept her from feeling too cold. She set her backpack and shoes down by the door, and slid down the wall next to them. There was no logical explanation for what she was experiencing. Nothing in her fifty years had prepared her for this.
Alone. It was all she could think. She had avoided being alone with her thoughts too much for the past three years. It led to places she did not want to go.
Her senses were flooded with the sterile look and smell of the emergency room. Her hand in Jason’s as they sat in the small room waiting. She had no more tears to cry. “It's not fair…” She started looking up at Jason. His eyes looked haunted. She could not finish her thought, too worried it would cause him more pain. The baby was gone.
Fifteen years seemed like a lifetime ago. The last time she had seen her husband smile was the day before that nightmare in the ER. They had stayed together. That was more than most couples who lose a baby do, but it had been a rough twelve years. She let the tears fall. She allowed herself to feel.
Another ER visit, this time she was alone. Jason’s pain had won. Twelve years he had tried to push back, beat it down, but he got tired. She had tried to help. They had tried doctors, medication, hospitals, and faith, but in the end it did not make a difference. Numbness enveloped her.
The last three years she spent ignoring the emptiness. She did have moments of joy mixed in, but they always made her feel guilty. Should she be happy, sad or angry?
“You were given emotions for a reason, my child.” A voice echoed through the empty room answering her unspoken thoughts
Irene jumped up and nearly fell over her backpack at the sound. Tears blurred her vision, but there was no mistaking the outline of a man standing in front of the altar.
“Where did you come from?”
“Irene, wipe your tears. Look at Me. See Me.”
She did, and was brought to her knees by the brilliant light that surrounded the man.
She felt a hand on her shoulder and she looked up. He was stooped down beside her, tears in his eyes. He took her hand and led her to the front of the church where two chairs had appeared.
“Where have you been?” Irene asked once she got her voice back. “I suffered so much. Lost so much. I felt abandoned.”
She saw his tears and she felt a pang of guilt at the accusation.
“Irene, I was with the nurse who held your hand when you had to leave the hospital without your son. I was with the friends who brought you meals after you lost Jason.”
”Why couldn’t I see you or hear you?”
”Did you slow down enough to Listen? To See?”
Irene knew she hadn’t. She had filled her life with busyness. Burying the feelings. Not wanting to burden others.
“Irene, by doing it on your own you deprived those around you of their opportunity to be my hands and feet. Do not be afraid to be in a place of receiving.”
He hugged Irene, giving her a kiss on the top of her head. She sobbed. Her body heaved and she allowed herself to lean into her Lord and grieve.
They stayed like that for what seemed like hours, and Irene felt drained.
“Sleep child. I will give you my peace.”
She awoke to voices. She grabbed her pack and headed out the door. The sun was shining bright and the clearing looked like it had the day before. She turned to look back at the small church, but all she saw was a rock wall, and a small wooden cross.
”Irene!” The guide said. “Thank goodness. We thought we had lost you.”
Irene smiled, “I was found.”
Don’t Sneeze!
It was a dark and stormy afternoon when the teens trooped into my office. I heard the shuffling feet outside my door. It creaked open, and I looked over the top of my battered paperback. They were thirteen, maybe fourteen. They wore jeans and shirts that were faded and worn. Their shoes were barely held together with duct tape.
“Are you Glen H.E. Robin, P.I.?”
“That’s what my door says. What can I do ya’ for?” I asked.
“We need you to find our friend who’s been missing for a couple of days.”
The taller of the two girls set a pair of crumbled twenties on my desk and said, “We can pay.”
Months without a paying case. Living on peanut butter sandwiches. This wouldn’t pay the rent. But their grim faces told me this wasn’t a social call.
I knew what it was like to be alone, unwanted, and these kids looked the part. There was no way I couldn’t take the job, if their friend was really missing.
“What makes y’all think she’s missing?”
“She’d never skip out on Thursdays at the skatepark.” The boy said.
The second girl slid an old cell phone across the desk towards me. “This is the last text we received from her.”
I looked at the cracked screen then up, confused. “This it?”
“Yeah. Got that yesterday morning and after that nothing. Angelo tried checking with her stepmom but she was no help.”
Angelo seemed distracted, not looking at anything but the floor and pulling at a loose thread on his T-shirt. He nodded when the girl said his name. “Cora’s right.”
I read the text aloud scratching at the two-day stubble on my chin. “I can’t go out there, there’s pollen.”
“Did she have allergies?”
“Lucy, do you know if Amanda had any allergies?” Cora asked the taller girl.
“No. That is why we were confused.”
”Is there anything special I need to know before I go snooping around?”
“Nooo?” Angelo said.
I leaned back, crossed my arms and gave my best glower. He shifted his weight and picked at a hole in his jacket. He was hiding something.
”I can’t help you if you aren’t gonna be honest with me.”
“We ain’t human.”
Only then, I noticed their aura and scent. The boy even had a slight yellow glow in his aura. I wasn’t human either. When I lost control of the Wild Hunt, I left that world behind.
“Changlings?”
“Yeah, we were told you could help.” Angelo said
It made me wonder who told them that. I had been living outside the Realm for ages. I didn’t think there was anyone left alive who knew what I was.
The rain had let up, so we walked to the skatepark. The slick pavement and continued drizzle kept the mortals away. The veil here was thin enough that the Realm pulled at me. I looked over to the kids to ask if they had used the portal.
“AAAchoo!” Suddenly Cora disappeared into a cloud of yellow dust. In a crack in the concrete, a dandelion sprouted where she had just been standing. My goblin senses picked up the scent of Summer: humidity mixed with sweet floral and cut grass. An ancient memory of prior hunts.
Gowan… He was a wyldfae, and it seemed he was up to his old tricks. Sowing chaos in my town. Even if I don’t lead the Wild Hunt anymore, I am still Herne Goblin, former Erlking.
I looked back at Lucy and Angelo.
Lucy’s nose was scrunched. Her chest shuddered. Her hand went up to her mouth. “Ah-ah-”
“LUCY! NO!” I yelled. “Don’t-”
“Choo..”
There was another poof of yellow and a second dandelion sprung up. I just stared at the space where the girls had been standing moments ago. The only sound was the intermittent rain drops hitting the ground around us. Two changlings taken on my watch, and one more missing.
Angelo stared down at the flowers in the crack. I dropped to my knees and put my head in my hands. I could run away, forget I met the kids and go back to my dusty office and battered books. No one would know.
. No. Gowan was not going to get away this time. I may not lead the hunt anymore, but I still belonged to the Realm, and I was still one of its greatest trackers.
“Angelo, do you have a pocket knife?”
“Yes?”
“Use it to dig out both the flowers. We need to keep those with us. I believe if we find the creature responsible for changing your two friends, we will find the third.”
I pulled out a bottle of nasal spray, and handed it to Angelo. “First take preventative measures so you don’t end up a poof of yellow too.”
He looked at me skeptically, but sprayed his nose, and handed the bottle back.
I took a good look at Angelo as he dug the flowers out. I shook my head. He was still hiding something.
The hairs on the back of my neck tried to crawl into my hat. There was a shimmer on the wet pavement behind Angelo and the heavy smell of humidity, and a tall, thin Sidhe appeared. Gowan.
“Good Job, my son. Hand me the flowers. I will take it from here.”
“Wait? What?!?” I looked at them both.
Angelo looked at me and grimaced. “Dad needed the power. Lucy and Cora were acceptable, so I turned them in.”
“Amanda figured it out and tried to warn Lucy and Cora, but they didn’t make the connection.”
I was reminded of our initial meeting, the scent and the color I saw in his aura. It made sense. I had been duped.
“You were hoping I would find Amanda, so you could take her too.”
Father and Son disappeared without answering. I was on the hunt again.
The Storm
The rubber rafts bobbed up and down. Passengers paddled frantically into the beach. They had been floating in the open ocean for hours. Lightning streaked through the dark, heavy clouds. Thunder rattled the small lifeboats. Jake jumped out of his boat and pulled both rafts ashore.
Why do I care about these people? No one ever took care of me? I should just leave them and take care of myself. Jake dismissed the thoughts with a shake of his head.
They needed to find shelter fast. Jake looked around the small cove. There were rocks, cliffs, and one small cave opening.
“Everyone, follow me!” Jake called out.
[Who’s gonna follow you? You’re no leader!]
Jake winced, he thought he had left that voice behind. He was stranded on a planet far from his home galaxy, and the voice had still found him.
The exhausted passengers pulled themselves up off the sand and followed Jake. The storm came quicker than expected, and the group barely made it into the cave before the wind picked up and the rain came down.
Jake pulled a flare out of the emergency pack, and lit it. He looked around at the group of broken people huddled in the damp cave. The ship had wrecked several hours ago, and people were exhausted and hungry. They had had enough water to last them the day, but that was now running low as well. He was going to die, surrounded by strangers. Lost. Alone. Without Hope.
“Young man, could you light a fire for us?” An old man asked from the shadows.
Jake looked around hesitantly and saw that he was the young man in question. In fact, he was the youngest person in the cave. “Um, Okay.”
[Failure…. Worthless….. Stupid…. They will find you out.]
The voice from his past echoed. “Go Away!” Jake whispered loudly. Looking around to see if anyone heard him. Couldn’t have people figuring out how crazy he was.
There was a pile of dry driftwood in the mouth of the cave. It was just enough to get a fire started. The fire crackled and lit up the faces around him while he handed out emergency blankets.
“Why thank you.” An old woman said quietly as he handed her the blanket.
“You’re welcome, ma’am.” Jake replied.
[Ha. You think they will believe you are really that polite? Pathetic. They will just think you are going to try to use them, control them.]
Jake sat apart from the others. Far away from the fire. It was safer in the shadows. Maybe they would forget he was there. Maybe they wouldn’t need him.
I cannot let them need me. I will fail them just like I failed to save mom. Jake tried to block the painful memories and the gorge that was rising in his stomach with them. He stared unfocused at the storm outside the cave.
“Guilty!” Jake had barely heard the jury foreman through his tears. It confirmed everything he had ever been told about himself.
[They threw you away like trash. That is what you are trash, just like that mother of yours.]
Jake squeezed his eyes against the voice in his head. Willing away the memories it brought with it. Thunder cracked outside, summoning his attention back to the present.
“Dearie, could you take the empty water jug outside to catch the rain?” The old woman he had given the blanket to asked, looking straight at him. Smiling.
She wouldn’t smile if she knew what I really was. What I did to deserve this one way space trip. Jake was trying to make himself small enough to not be noticed, but for some reason the others kept seeking him out.
[They aren’t seeking you out. They are scared of you. Scared of what you might do. They don’t want to let you out of their sight. You Freak.]
His smile did not reach his eyes as he took the jugs and placed them in the rain. Just once he wanted to be told he was worthy. That there was something worth living for. Hard to believe that when they sent you on a one way trip to the planet of useless humans. At least he had actually committed a crime. The rest of these people were just guilty of the crime of getting too old to be useful.
[Don’t kid yourself you are unforgivable, broken. Just like your mother.]
His stepdad’s voice was getting louder. The memories getting harder to push away. He put his head in his hands trying to press the emotions down.
“Are you okay son?” An old man asked quietly. “Can I sit here next to you? I am getting a bit warm close to the fire.”
Jake flinched as the man sat down. He was sitting close. Too close. Jake kept his head down, his eyes on the ground. “Fine.”
I am not fine, Jake thought. I am a monster, and the voice in my head won’t leave me alone.
The storm continued to rage outside as Jake’s mind spiraled. Suddenly he was back home reliving that fateful day.
“Woman!” He heard his step father yell at his mother. A loud THWAP followed, and he heard his mother’s voice pleading unintelligibly. STOMP. STOMP. “Crazy, worthless freak!” SLAP. THUD.
Jake curled up in a ball with his hands over his ears trying to block it out just like the other nights. But this night was different. Jake felt the thunder in his belly. The storm came quicker than expected. Blackness. Then, standing over his stepfather with a hammer, covered in blood.
Unfortunately, he had been too late, his mother lay on the floor motionless with her neck at an unnatural angle. He collapsed and wept.
Tears wet his face as he was brought back to the present by concerned voices.
“Son, can you hear me? We need you here. Please”
“Honey, please we want to help you.”
Jake opened his eyes. The rain had stopped.

I Don’t Believe in Humans
Boom, Boom, Boom. The sound pounded in my ears. The loud rhythmic pounding bounced me out of my hammock and onto the hard wood floor of my room. What in the world was going on out there?
I pushed aside the large oak leaf that served as my door, and stepped out onto the large tree limb. I looked around, and did not see any of the birds and squirrels that normally inhabited the tree with us.
I saw my brother out toward the end of the branch. “Ziti!” I called out. “What in the world is that racket?”
”The humans are having a party.” He said, looking out over the grassy field at the base of our tree.
“Seriously…” I muttered. Humans. That was everyone’s explanation for the weird noises and strange things that happened. I had never once seen these things that my family and friends refer to as humans.
I looked out where my brother was looking, and the only thing I saw was a strange box sitting on the huge wooden deck that sat under our tree. That box seemed to be where the sounds were coming from. Under the music I heard the sound of voices laughing, shouting, and singing. I shook my head. It had to be some sort of fae glamour or the gnomes playing tricks.
There was no sense trying to go back to relaxing in my room, so I flew off to see if it was quieter over at Tessie’s tree.
The sun was high in the sky, and the gentle breeze let me ride its back all the way to the maple tree Tessie called home. The dew drop fairy was sitting on a branch next to a bird's nest watching the path that wound through the grove of trees.
“Are you waiting for someone?” I asked, looking down at the empty path.
“No, silly, I am watching the mortals prance through the grove.” Tessie answered.
”No, really.” I said frustrated that everyone seemed to be hung up on seeing humans. “Aren’t we a bit too old to believe in humans?”
“Zura, they are real, and they are all over the place. Can’t you see them down there? You had to have flown past at least fifty of them on your way over here from your tree.”
“There was nothing but noise over by my tree today. No large bipeds in sight.” I was getting frustrated. I was not going to be taken in by stories and pranks.
”Everyone in this grove is nuts today. I am not going to give you all the satisfaction of trying to get me to say that I see humans when I know that they do not exist. I do not believe in Humans” As the words left my lips I felt a large burst of air as something large and round flew between me and Tessie.
I lost my balance and fell backwards off the limb tumbling wings over feet to the ground. Wings flapping frantically, I tried to right myself to no avail. The ground came up and hit me in the face before I could get the wind under my wings. A few seconds later a large red disk fell out of the tree and landed right next to me.
I slowly crawled to my feet brushing dirt off my knees and face, trying to keep my balance in spite of the throbbing in my nose and head. This was not good. What was that thing? I wobbled my way over to the red disk and put my palm on the edge of it. Cold and rough to the touch. No magical vibration or life force.
Before I could make any further observations, I was knocked to the ground again. I watched the strange object fly up on its own. Followed by a voice, “Found it! You’re lucky it didn’t get caught in the tree. No way I would be climbing a tree to get it back.”
Hits to the head caused strange things to happen. It had to be the hit to the head. That is why I was hearing voices and seeing things. I hesitantly flapped my wings worried they may have been injured in the fall. They seemed to be okay, so I lifted into the air to take a look around. No one in sight except a few squirrels and a couple of canine quadrupeds. No large mortals on two legs. “I do not believe in—“
Suddenly I was spinning through the air out of control once again. At this rate I was going to have to visit Dr. Spritewinkle for a few healing potions. This time I felt like I had been hit by a large vehicle. Stars filled my vision. Before I could figure out which way was up, I found myself flat on my back on something soft, squishy, and warm.
As my vision slowly cleared, the area around me came into focus. The surface under me was green fabric with pictures of ducks. Above me was a roof of some sort. The strangest part was that the whole thing seemed to be moving on its own through the grove.
”AGGG!” I yelped. The air squeezed out of my lungs. My wings were squished. Something had me. I closed my eyes hoping whatever monster had me would eat me fast.
Nothing happened for what felt like an eternity, but was probably only a few seconds. Then a sound broke the silence. It rang through my body. my heart beat faster, and my fairy dust poofed out all over.
“GGGGAaa.” The strange gurgling noise warmed me down to my toes. An unbidden smile came to my lips.
I braved opening one eye. What met my gaze shocked me to my core. I guess I do believe in humans.
