So this piece is waaayy back from April, and I posted it on insta but forgot to post it here. It was a submission for a mental health art contest in my school district and is really personal to me (but thankfully, I’m not going to expand on that 🫠). I didn’t end up winning, but I’m proud of myself because it was really far out of my comfort zone and skill level, and it’s safe to say that I struggled way more than I would’ve liked 🗿🗿. There are a lot of things I wish turned out differently or looked better, but I’m proud of myself nonetheless for not giving up halfway and trying something different. Who knew I would enjoy drawing and painting ocean environments? 🌊

The Cape Fear Shiner (Notropis mekistocholas) is a small endangered species of minnow only found in the Cape Fear River Basin in North Carolina. It's protected under the Endangered Species Act and is extremely hard to find, currently only being found in two rivers and a few tributaries.
