A second set of headcannons for each fellowship member because they don’t leave my head.
Before bilbo and Frodo’s journeys, gandalfs tendency to take tooks on long adventures were basically his version of a father (or more accurately a grandfather) taking a day off work to spend it with the kids since it’s what he likes to do when his isn’t busy being a royal advisor to every nation of middle earth. That’s why he felt so much more whimsical in the hobbit before he realised he actually needed to lock in because everything was getting a lot more dangerous than expected and prior to blibos journey the ‘grand excursions’ of the tooks were all quite harmless.
Aragorn sleeps like the dead. Not in the way that it’s difficult to wake him up but instead in the way that the others swear he doesn’t even breathe. Every single night at least one fellowship member checks his pulse just to make sure on their watch shift but are all to embarrassed to admit it.
Legolas is a picky eater but feels awful about it. He knows damn well that everyone puts so much effort into collecting and cooking proper meals but he isn’t used to the plants and meats being any less than prepared to the perfection of his taste, the thought of many of them makes him feel ill. Elves don’t need to eat as much as other groups so he isn’t even bothered without the additional meals but still he is so thankful when they get to Lothlórien because he doesn’t have to come up with excuses anymore with the lembas bread.
Gimli is stuck without being able to reach the back of his hair to comfortably rebrand and brush it because he doesn’t feel able to ask another who isn’t his family to do it for him against dwarvish custom. This is until he remembers that Frodo is bilbos nephew and bilbo was named kin by his father and therefore close enough that he allows it. A few weeks later, after many reassurances that they wouldn’t mess with his hair outside of what they were instructed to do, he permits merry and pippin to do the same since as frodos cousins they could also arguably be extended family.
Boromir is genuinely unused to seeing blue skies everyday because of how the dark cloud from Mordor spread to Minas Tirith during his youth. He feels wierdly exposed for much of the journey apart from when it’s stormy, on those occasions he visably brightens, he’s far more open about his past too since it makes him feel nostalgic.
Frodo is the tallest hobbit at the start of the journey but the shortest by the end both because he stops feeling as hungry due to the influence of the ring and the malnourishment stunts his growth but also because of the weight of the ring around his neck pressing down upon him stopping any growth in the same way it keeps bilbo stagnant. (Plus merry and pippin drinking the ent draught and having major height spurts didn’t help)
Sam despite being very social, needs at least an hour every night on his own. The so named ‘bugger off’ time is always at sunset, he sits often against a rock facing it, occasionally joined by Aragorn who he can both trust to not try to break the silence and needs a good amount of time away from their rowdy company too. This habit breaks with the fellowship since he refuses to let Frodo out of his sight.
Merry is scarily good at calculating distance and memorising routes. At the end of every day when they settle down to rest he will be prompted and will always be able to give the mileage they’ve traveled give or take a few. This ability is sorely missed when the 3 hunters are trying to track him and pippin down.
Pippin is deadly serious about hygiene. You wouldn’t think it considering his laid back attitude but he has a really weak immune system plus had a tendency to wander off into bramble bushes and the like as a kid. After some truly awful infections alongside near constant illness, he has become very strict about every and any possible causes of disease. he subtlety ensures other members wash their hands before they eat, use soap when rinsing the bowls out, disinfect even the smallest of cuts and don’t eat anything too rank (mostly by loudly announcing that he’s about to, meaning that everyone else would have to make a noticeable choice to not be hygienic if they did not follow)
