Well, it was an easy answer. It was so easy that it made Durin's cheeks burn a bit.

"Hmm... what an interesting question. I suppose it's possible--but it would really depend on when the world was 'set to end', so to speak."

Nahida rests a curled fist to her lips, her brows furrowed.

"If the event of the end is set to take place in the distant future, then my odds of living to see such a thing decrease dramatically, as does everyone's odds. I may be immortal, but I am not immune to death--any number of things can kill me tomorrow, if my fate was determined as such. I wouldn't know."

He became protective of Wrenn; he could not stand anyone getting near him, not even to check on him. Even at that stage, a part of him knew, but he grew increasingly agitated when anyone suggested anything less than complete certainty that life would return. Wrenn would wake up. They would go home. Durin promised that they would, both of them.

There was no moment of realization, because it had been obvious, no switch into acceptance. Just the grief clawing inside his chest that could no longer be suppressed. He cradled Wrenn's unmoving form, tenderly drawing his thumb across his cheek and watching for any flicker of response from those closed lids. He choked on a helpless sob. It cracked his stubborn denial, and the flood leaked, then burst through and he wailed, hugging Wrenn so tightly like it would keep Durin from breaking.

How humiliating it was to recall his promise to protect Wrenn. No wonder he hadn't been able to believe Durin—he shouldn't have, for his audacious hubris. Would it have been better if he had let Wrenn run when he'd wanted to? Maybe then he could still be alive, somewhere far away even if Dottore had swallowed the entirety of Nod Krai, even the world. And Durin, so pathetically clinging to his body as if his own hands hadn't, by bringing him back, bound him to this very fate.

Durin's own choices had killed him. All the best intentions did not make a dragon good. Better that Wrenn had never met him at all, that Durin had never been born to take Wrenn's hand and lead him into death.

And he hated those thoughts, because he knew that Wrenn would've been glad to have met him, and Durin selfishly was glad that they'd met as well. How awful he was to wish that he had never been alive when Wrenn gave his life to protect theirs? But he wanted him back, so desperately, crying and wishing and thinking that he couldn't be so good as Wrenn always told him he was, if he couldn't even keep the one promise that mattered.

Evan: - Gave him a far more neutral and generalized verse for others to interact with as a starting point -Gave him a past verse with him as an abyss Knight in Training -Old verses won't be affected by this, but I made Evan canon-compliant again in some cases/verses for the future by making it so Evan's soul actually comes from the Abyss--meaning he is a Nameless Bard who's fate had Not Come To Pass. This will be the story I go with going forward unless a partner would rather play in the AU, non-canon compliant version of him being a child soldier who wasn't obliterated by the magic of time.

Venti: -Shortened the tag of their main verse to "V; A Song Endlessly Repeated" because the former tag was too long imo -Added a Past verse for Venti being a young god at the tail end of and after the Archon War -I changed Venti's pronouns to They/Them officially, but in threads with others, Venti is going to be written as someone who is "in the closet" about their gender, so to speak. You can read more about that on their page on my carrd.

Wrenn: -Added a shared crossover verse with @fractalwaves's and her Takumi because what is friendship if not smushing your blorbos into one universe?

Decarabian -Made it more clear that Decarabian is agender but still uses He/him pronouns. He/him Enby.

Nahida -Nothing really changed here, I just specified that I didn't want to do a past verse because I thought it might be a bit boring. -Nahida is also a part of the THL crossover verse

Kabu -Added an open verse where Kabu was made by Scaramouche instead of Wanderer! I thought it might be a fun AU, haha
