If someone asks why we need more diverse representation in Transformers media and retail offerings, remind them that what GoBots three decades ago STILL HASN’T BEEN TOPPED.

(Why is Nancy here? Because no other Cybertronian women had speaking roles in the original Transformers cartoon. We checked.)

The comic showings are especially dismal.  Windblade is a big deal precisely because holy crap this is the first time female Transformers are appearing in the main continuity of a comic franchise that’s been going on in one way or another since the early 80s without it being treated as something horrible (comic Arcee being the product of forced gender reassignment on an unwilling victim).  Simon Furman’s domination over the comics and resistance to the concept of female Transformers has left the comics badly lagging behind every other continuity in term of representation (continuities that are only doing a so-so job themselves), to the point where fans voting to design a toy on Hasbro’s website had to basically step in and drag the franchise forward with Windblade (while Furman expressed displeasure).   If you look through tfwiki’s list of female Transformers, a depressingly large number of them spring from fans trying to make the gender gap less of a chasm by creating new characters (who never appear in the books or shows) for the Encyclopedias/Almanacs, assigning a female gender to obscure toys that never got a bio (and thus no official gender), and characters showing up only in books for conventions. There’s 209 female Transformers listed there, and that number required thoroughly scraping the bottom of the barrel.  The site has 884 G1 Autobots and Decepticons.  Even if the 209 female robots were all G1 (and they’re not, not remotely), they’d still be less than a fourth.
