I just had an idea. What if Kachidoki joined the Lancers? Think about it. My main problem with his style of dueling (beating the everliving crap out of his opponents) is that it's out of place in the Arc League. If he was allowed to fight the Fusion Dimension, who have no qualms with murdering their defeated opponents, then beating the stuffing out of them in order to win makes since.

@musiclover2732 you’re in luck cuz I’ve had this in my drafts >D<
this is not at all done—
putting it under a cut cuz it’s long
please note that Reiji is terribly ooc—
Shun woke up with a tightness in his chest. Knowing what it was he rushed to the bathroom and kneeled over the toilet before vomiting clumps of flowers and petals covered in blood and saliva.
A hand went to his stomach softly coaxing him to get rid of all the flora. Another went to Shun’s side, supporting his body.
When Shun finally stopped throwing up, the person crouched beside him, letting Shun fall into his chest.
“It’s been aggravated." The low voice commented, continuing to stroke Shun’s side. “You’ve started puking fully bloomed flowers in addition to some buds. There’s gardenia, yellow tulips and fritillania in addition to the bluebells, pansies and erica.”
“Thanks for the reminder. It’s not like I just spent 2 minutes puking my guts.” Shun couldn’t make his voice sound harsh, it was already raspy from his vomit session.
The other person grabbed some tissue and began wiping away the blood on his companion’s face.
Shun turned to look at him, why couldn’t he have fallen in love with him instead? He was a beautiful man, silvery hair like a grey hawk’s feathers and sharp violet eyes with expert precision.
Reiji chuckled softly, “Careful now, Shun. You might start giving me Hanakahi-Byou.” At the confusion on the other man’s face, he elaborated, “You were talking aloud. I’m very flattered.”
Shun blushed and looked away, "Sorry about that. But honestly, it would be much easier if I just got with you instead.” He scoffed, biting his lip to keep from crying.
Reiji went silent, “I’m sorry Shun. You know Ruri would rather you stay alive than date Yuto.”
Shun didn’t answer him because he knew if he did, his voice would tremble and shake, just as his body was currently.
“And… if you were to fall in love with me. Your love would still be unrequited, you’ve known that I don’t feel romantically or sexually for people.”
He hated Reiji’s dismissal, “But you still care. You let me come over whenever, never asking why or getting annoyed at me. You hold me. You-you comfort me when I’m selfish and on the verge of death. You–” He stopped himself abruptly as tears were let loose.
“I make you feel seen, cared for.” He completed Shun’s thought. He discarded the bloody tissue and grabbed another, patting away the tears.
“Even unrequited, I could die happy.”
“I understand.” Reiji handed him a tissue to blow his nose, Shun accepted.
Another moment of silence went by as Reiji threw the tissues away and flushing away the flowers. Shun spoke up, “It wouldn’t work.”
Reiji raised a brow, “What won’t?”
“Telling Ruri. Yuto doesn’t like men, he’s said so himself.”
“Ah yes, this is such a wonderful world where no one could ever do something as heinous as tell a little white lie to seem normal.”
Shun looked back up at Reiji whose face was dead serious. “Even if he did love me back, I risk Ruri getting hanahaki.”
“Ever heard of polyamory?”
Shun rolled his eyes, “We already talked about that, if I don’t feel the love is truly requited, the Hanahaki-Byou won’t go away. In the worst case, it’d make my symptoms worse.”
Reiji sighed, “Well, since you’re starting to mope, how about we get some food?”
“Yeah, that’d be good.” Shun lifted himself off the floor with Reiji’s help. He stood for a moment.
“Are y–” He was abruptly cut off by Shun pressing their lips together, putting his hands on Reiji’s face as they kissed. Shun had bouts of this occasionally, nothing really surprised Reiji. Shun pulled away. “Did you feel anything this time?”
Shun shook his head, “No. But of course, you expected that, didn’t you?”
“Unfortunately. Where would you like to eat?”
His remark caught Shun off guard, “We’re eating out?”
“Why not, maybe it’ll help stir some romanticism.”
“...Was that a joke?”
“Yes. However, I think it will be good for you. Besides, it’s almost dinner time.”
Shun nodded, “I don’t have a preference. You can choose.”

“Ice cream?” Shun questioned.
“Yeah, did you have another place in mind?” Reiji pulled in a parking space in front of the establishment?
“No, I’ve been here before with Ruri.” And Yuto. Shun shrugged, ignoring the cramping in his diaphragm.
“With all honesty, I searched for places to eat while you were getting ready.”
Shun snorted, “Of course you did. Your diet is primarily instant ramen and take out.”
Reiji rolled his eyes, “Stop with the slander, Shun, you know you aren’t any better.” He smirked, turning off the engine and unstrapping.
They walked in, it was bright, white and baby blue seemed to be the color palette. It hadn’t changed much, if at all, from when he last came here.
(I skipped a ton of crap here, it’ll be fixed in the actual fic)
“You know, I meant it when I said you’re beautiful.”
Reiji poked fun at Shun, “So are you falling for me? I didn’t know I was that captivating.”
Shun scoffed, taking a bite of his ice cream, “Shut up, I’m just trying to be nice.”
“Mmh, you’re very handsome as well. If I were a “normal person” I would definitely be attracted to you.”
“I’ve been meaning to ask about that. Is there any reason in particular why you’re aroace? Did something happen or did you just know that you didn’t like people?”
“No reason. People are definitely interesting but I'd rather study them from afar than be part of a social experiment.”
“Relationships aren’t social experiments.”
“They practically are. Are we seriously going to argue about this?” Reiji prompted, taking a sip of his drink.
Shun scowled, “It’s pointless to argue with you.” He leaned back and closed his eyes.
“Mmh, ‘course it is. If I may, why are you so invested in Yuto? I get that he’s one heck of a guy; no record, not much conflict, volunteers regularly, I can’t even find— as you’d colloquially say— dirt on him.”
Shun chuckled, “Yeah, his idea of a ‘deep dark secret’ would be that he stepped on a ladybug.”
Reiji nodded, “I don’t believe you’re wrong. However, is that truly his deep dark secret? I’d expect you to know at least something because you’ve been his best friend when both of you were younger.”
Shun opened his eyes, “No, Yuto does have secrets, things he’s confided in me. He does have a darker side. I just…” he froze, remembering what he would consider Yuto’s biggest secret.
“Yuto!” Shun yelled, running towards his friend who stood in front of another boy of his age.
“Shun! I-I don’t know what happened, something just came over me and–” Yuto panted, tears welling in his eyes as he covered his mouth with his hands. “They’re going to expel me…”
Shun looked at the kid passed out on the ground, he turned back to his friend, “Did you knock him out?”
Yuto nodded, sobbing.
The taller man made a split second decision and kneeled by the kid, smearing the blood from the kid's nose on his knuckles.
“Shun what are y–”
“You can’t afford to get in trouble, I can. I’m not letting them send you back to the orphanage.” He pulled the kid up by his collar and whispered, “You will go along with what I say. If you tell anyone about this, I’ll make sure I’m the one who beats you up next time.”
The kid whined quietly. As Shun dropped the kid on the ground, a hall monitor came around the corner.
“What is going on here?!” She demanded.
Shun stood up and looked at her defiantly, “He was bad mouthing my friend here. I taught him not to. Besides, he tried hitting me first.”
“Shun.”
“Shun.”
“Hey!”
He snapped out of his trance, aware of Reiji who was standing beside his chair, leaning on the table. “I thought you died.”
“Joke?”
“Yeah. Seriously though, what were you thinking?”
“I’ll… tell you when we go back to your place.”
“Oh? Already making plans with me?”
His face twitched. Frowning, he snarked, "Sometimes I can’t tell if you’re genuinely kidding or not. If I didn’t know any better, I’d say you’re in love with me.”
“Scowl any more and you’ll get frown lines, that’s not very pleasing to the ladies,” Reiji pouted, batting his eyes.
Shun grinned while chuckling, “God, you’re such a dick. Besides, I’m gay.” He stared Reiji straight in his eyes, “You get off on this, don’t you?”
Reiji sat back down, legs crossed, “I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t enjoying our little outing.”
“Are all aroace people like this?”
“Hmh. You’ve made a fatal error: assuming I interact with anyone else.”
“How depressing. Are you going to give me your tragic backstory?”
“You already know how it goes. After all, it’s practically the same as yours.”
Shun tensed.
“Young kid, rich parents, rocky marriage, parents drowning themselves in work. Would you like me to skip to the part where they all die and we’re left as orphans and inherit the family fortune because we’re adults?”
“No. I’d rather you didn’t.”
Reiji studied Shun’s face. The other man’s lips were pursed, he’d struck a nerve. “Sorry.”
Shun shook his head, “Don’t be. I don’t want you to pity me either. I have enough pity to last three lifetimes.”
“Do you believe in reincarnation?”
“How did we get to religion?”
“Well you–”
“Joke. It was a joke, Reiji.”
“Right.” Reiji crossed his arms on the table and placed his head on them. “Do you believe in it?”
“I couldn’t care less for religion. Besides, if there's a hell, I’m going there.”
“You’re not a bad man, Shun.” Reiji blinked slowly, “What makes you so sure?”
“Okay, I didn’t know this was a therapy session.” Shun snapped defensively, crossing his arms, “I’m not baring my soul in a friggin ice cream parlor.”
“Then how about we go home?”
Shun twitched, the softness in Reiji’s voice surprised him. Especially with how he referred to it as home. “Sure, why not.”
(they pay and leave, also skipped lmao.)
Reiji drove on the way back as well. Shun turned on the radio, scrolling through the pre-made playlists. “What are all of these for?”
“Music, or do you not know what a radio is?”
“Why are you being such an asshole today? What did I do to piss His Majesty off?”
“Nothing, but it's working, isn’t it?”
“What do you mean?”
“Apart from talking about Yuto’s secret, you haven’t thought about him at all, have you?”
“I–” Reiji wasn’t wrong, he’d been more focused on all of Reiji’s sarcasm and comments.
“I believe this is an appropriate time to say “told you so.””
Shun rolled his eyes and clicked a random playlist. He wasn’t in the mood for debate. Besides, now that he’d mentioned it, Shun’s chest was hurting again.
A calming song came on, the title reading “rises the moon”.
(author’s note here: this is probably going to be cut from the actual fic, I am cringing lol—)
Days seem sometimes as if they’ll never end
Sun digs its heels to taunt you
But after sunlit days,
One thing stays the same
Rises the moon
(moon)
“What’s this playlist for?”
“When… I’m not feeling well.” Reiji gave only a clipped answer in response.
Memories swim, and haunt you
But look into the lake
Shimmering like smoke

Reiji started to sing quietly with the lyrics.
Oh, oh
Close your weary eyes

That soon the autumn comes to darken fading summer skies
Breathe,
Breathe,
Breathe
Shun didn’t pry any farther. He was slightly mesmerized by Reiji’s singing. He assumed the other man didn’t have any vocal lessons, he didn’t seem the type to take them, but he knew the lyrics by heart. Shun had noticed a similar thing in Ruri, she would probably like this song.
Days pull you down just like a sinking ship
Ooh, ooh, ooh
Floating is getting harder
Reiji’s voice was deep, as it had always been. He seemed… sad when singing it. As he’d seen with his sister, there was a look in his eyes that told Shun that there must’ve been a deeper meaning to why he liked the song.
But tread the water, child
And know that meanwhile,
Rises the moon…
Days pull you up just like a daffodil
Uprooted from its garden
They’ll tell you what you owe,
But even so,
Rises the moon
You’ll be, visited by sleep
I promise that soon the autumn comes to steal each dream you keep
Breathe,
Breathe,
Breathe
The song ended as gently as it had started.
Reiji switched off the radio, his finger tapping the steering wheel, “You never answered my question.”
He had done it so abruptly, Shun had to take a moment to process what he had said. “Which question?”
“Are you religious?”
“Why are you bringing that up now?”
“I’m curious. You seem to be the type that doesn’t believe in anything but themself.
“Well you’re right about that. Faith is comforting. Ruri has still kept our parents faith but I never really believed. I feel it’s fair for me to ask a question about you.”
“Sure, an eye for an eye.”
Shun scoffed at the idiom, “My question isn’t even that bad. (Author’s note: have a few questions I wanna put here)
Sometime later:
“There’s also another question of mine you haven’t answered, why do you love Yuto?”
~at home~ (AGAIN, STUFF WAS SKIPPED)
“It’s still pretty early. I’m gonna get some work done, you can go to sleep.” (Reiji).
“No you aren’t.”
Reiji blinked in confusion, “I will get work done? I don’t tend to procrastinate.”
“What I mean is that you aren’t going to work.”
“Well what am I supposed to do then? I do have a company to run.”
“You need to take a break. I swear, everytime I see you, you’re on your damn computer or trying to help me. Just take a break and do something for yourself.”
Reiji held Shun’s gaze, thinking over what he had said. “Then what do you suggest we do?”
“I dunno, watch a movie, play a game, something fun, y’know?”
Reiji tapped his foot, “There is this movie I’ve been meaning to watch.”
Shun smiled, “There you go, see, I knew you could be normal!” He joked.
“You’re… smiling?” Reiji’s face scrunched.
“Is there something wrong with that?”
“You haven’t smiled much. The last time you did was when you called me a dick.”
“I didn't mean it, I hope you didn’t take it the wrong way.”
“No, your jokes are typically easy to understand.” He shrugged, “Let’s go.”
~~~~~~~~~~
“The Imitation Game?” Shun read the title of the movie Reiji had chosen.
“It’s an older movie but the synopsis is a group trying to solve the Engima Code. It takes place during a war, thought that might interest you as well.”
Shun nodded, “Sounds cool. Want anything before we start?” Shun got comfortable, leaning back with his legs spread, an arm draped over the back of the couch and the other on the armrest.
Reiji shook his head and laid on his side, leaning slightly on Shun.
Reiji seemed quite calm and focused on the movie. He’d been quiet for the most part except some back and forth about certain aspects. Shun got an unnamable urge to touch Reiji’s hair. It always looked so soft, and he’d felt it once before. He doubted Reiji would mind. At most, he’d make an off-handed comment. Or ignore it completely.
Shun placed his hand on Reiji’s head, feeling his hair. It was extremely soft.
Reiji flinched, pushing Shun’s hand off and sitting straight. He moved away from Shun slightly, one of his hands opening and closing while the other was trying to get it to stop.
Shun realized he might’ve crossed a boundary, “S-sorry, are you alright?”
Reiji nodded a bit quick, “Just… don’t do that.” He didn’t sound angry at all. More anxious and shakey, disembodied, in a way.
Author’s note: the imitation game is actually a really good movie. It’s been awhile since I watched it tho lol. It’s during World War II, the Enigma being a cipher device to encode messages.
I am gonna rewrite so much of this lmao. Shun also needs to throw up more (this is non-negotiable)
@musiclover2732 you’re in luck cuz I’ve had this in my drafts >D<
“Thanks for the reminder. It’s not like I just spent 2 minutes puking my guts.” Shun couldn’t make his voice sound harsh, it was already raspy from his vomit session.
The other person grabbed some tissue and began wiping away the blood on his companion’s face.
Shun rolled his eyes, “We already talked about that, if I don’t feel the love is truly requited, the Hanahaki-Byou won’t go away. In the worst case, it’d make my symptoms worse.”
Reiji blinked in confusion, “I will get work done? I don’t tend to procrastinate.”
“What I mean is that you aren’t going to work.”
“Well what am I supposed to do then? I do have a company to run.”
“You need to take a break. I swear, everytime I see you, you’re on your damn computer or trying to help me. Just take a break and do something for yourself.”
Reiji held Shun’s gaze, thinking over what he had said. “Then what do you suggest we do?”
“I dunno, watch a movie, play a game, something fun, y’know?”
Reiji tapped his foot, “There is this movie I’ve been meaning to watch.”
Shun smiled, “There you go, see, I knew you could be normal!” He joked.
“You’re… smiling?” Reiji’s face scrunched.
“Is there something wrong with that?”
“You haven’t smiled much. The last time you did was when you called me a dick.”
“I didn't mean it, I hope you didn’t take it the wrong way.”
“No, your jokes are typically easy to understand.” He shrugged, “Let’s go.”
~~~~~~~~~~
“The Imitation Game?” Shun read the title of the movie Reiji had chosen.
“It’s an older movie but the synopsis is a group trying to solve the Engima Code. It takes place during a war, thought that might interest you as well.”
Shun nodded, “Sounds cool. Want anything before we start?” Shun got comfortable, leaning back with his legs spread, an arm draped over the back of the couch and the other on the armrest.
Reiji shook his head and laid on his side, leaning slightly on Shun.
Reiji seemed quite calm and focused on the movie. He’d been quiet for the most part except some back and forth about certain aspects. Shun got an unnamable urge to touch Reiji’s hair. It always looked so soft, and he’d felt it once before. He doubted Reiji would mind. At most, he’d make an off-handed comment. Or ignore it completely.
Shun placed his hand on Reiji’s head, feeling his hair. It was extremely soft.
Reiji flinched, pushing Shun’s hand off and sitting straight. He moved away from Shun slightly, one of his hands opening and closing while the other was trying to get it to stop.
Shun realized he might’ve crossed a boundary, “S-sorry, are you alright?”
Reiji nodded a bit quick, “Just… don’t do that.” He didn’t sound angry at all. More anxious and shakey, disembodied, in a way.
Author’s note: the imitation game is actually a really good movie. It’s been awhile since I watched it tho lol. It’s during World War II, the Enigma being a cipher device to encode messages.
I am gonna rewrite so much of this lmao. Shun also needs to throw up more (this is non-negotiable)

So I have a lot of thoughts about this show but I’m too nervous to share some of my hot takes or headcanons because I may come across as bias or something but uhhh here’s some I’m willing to share.
Not sure if hot take or not but yuzu was protag material and should have shared the spotlight more with Yuya. In fact all the girls were treated horribly in the show and deserved better.
The synchro arc was fine, the show just needed more eps for xyz and in general.
While the legacy characters were cool I think they relied on them too much especially with the synchro arc. Kaito was done better but kinda sucks they just up and deleted his brother.
While the whole make baby reira laugh ending was weird, I think the ending has its merits, and leaves things ambiguous enough that people can draw whatever conclusion they want from it. Aka whether Zarc moved on or is in some capacity still around, how often Yuya communicates with the other boys, if yuzu is capable of the same, and what yuyas status as partially a duel monster/dragon entails. Or even outside of that: the dimensions being connected but not fused. I feel like there’s a lot there to work with.
Xyz arc had the chance to really say something and didn’t.
Show needed more slice of life episodes and a slower burn.
As far as head canons… uh none I’m comfortable sharing so that’s it
Gonna try to mention some that haven't been already said by others:
Reira (or Riley if you prefer) is and has always been a girl, while I don't want to take away people's trans or nb headcanons about her, and honestly it does sound like the staff left it up in the air by intentionally using gender neutral ways to talk about her, it was mostly the usual translation issues that made it difficult for international audiences so feel free to disagree with me, this is just how it feels for me and I personally love the idea of having Reiji and Reira being the usual brother and sister duo of Arc V, and I like the idea that by sneaking in a female character without actually saying it, gave them more freedom to write her more than just the typical sister character of the franchise, and admittedly for it erases some very unfortunate and sexist implications if her character was a boy in certain scenes (ex. the infamous nerve gas scene)
For the most part I have zero issues with the legacy characters, I actually like some of them better than their og versions (like Edo and Kaito, sorry but not sorry) but I do think that Asuka was underutilized, and idk I think people are sick of hearing me say this, but I think that she should have been the one dueling Yuri along with Kaito and Yugo rather than just being cannon fodder to show how strong he was, her theme even has an ongoing theme of resurrection (because of Visnu) which idk, but it sounds like it would have fit perfectly to that duel, lastly this is more minor, but I think she and Dennis should have met at least once, since both of them are from Academia, one a defector and the other a traitor, and I was lowkey disappointed that they never did.
Ray was a great duelist and I take no arguments against it, she literally had to be in order to activate the En Cards in the United World, because unlike what people like to say, they aren't a deus ex machina, it took several other characters and episodes to barely reunite the requisites to use them while she did it on her own, and they still needed her to deliver the final move against Zarc, not to mention that she seemed to get a better hang of how to use them than even Leo knew, because let's remember that when he found her in the middle of dueling Zarc he was absolutely shocked that Ray was absorbing the En Card's power inside of her and created the bracelets, so yeah, she was the series MVP.
I left the more controversial hot take for last, because it has to do with a fan favorite: Shun, okay I know at one point I became sort of infamous for not caring about him and being constantly annoyed at how much the fandom hyped him up, but please hear me out: I think he ended up in a very similar situation that Crow in 5ds, he probably was meant to be defeated and carded as far back as the Maiami Battle Royale and... yeah, I personally don't think they had many more plans with his character at least not for a good while, BUT his card archetype ended up having very good sales, and obviously Konami aka. the powers that be, wanted to milk that, because the hints are all there, anyone remembers how he pretty did much of nothing during the first half of the Synchro arc? While the rest of the Lancers were having a bunch of interactions, duels and development, he literally spent all that time being his usual edgy temperamental self and being separated from the main characters a whole lot? And even when he was with them, he almost never had any meaningful interactions with any of them, and the less I talk about how awkwardly forced his "friendship" with Crow was the better, the most emotionally invested he was shown was his duel against Dennis and even that was more to develop Dennis than himself, and during the Academia invasion he was literally running around, yelling about where is Academia and never doing anything while literally every other character was dueling one of them?? I honest to god laugh when I remember that, it all reads like the writers didn't know what to do with him because it's likely that he wasn't meant to be there to begin with, that one day they received a message from the executive meddling board and were told to keep him around and it was only until the Xyz arc where they seem to have figured what to do with him.
The anime's ending was good. Yuya vs. Reiji was a good final duel for the series, gave Yuya a good cap for his development and even Reiji was more at ease a bit more afterwards due to their duel. I never had an issue with the counterparts staying merged. I think fans treated merging as akin to death ever since it first happened to Yuto, even though the show itself never treated it as such. I'm not surprised that kind of impression stuck, especially when Yuto only appears as kind of a spirit afterwards, but I never thought of it as them dying. It was treated as a bad thing due to Zarc's revival, but not quite like death, especially when carding was treated as the stand in for death. There was no instant fix it button to undo it. The only way to undo the merge was through the En Cards and they were gone by the end of the series. Even if they weren't, using them would have reverted them back into babies, so the characters would be effectively gone.
I think that there were more hints, at least in hindsight, that unmerging wasn't going to happen. Not only because of how that wasn't a clear established goal for the cast, but Yuya or Yuto never brought up the possibility of unmerging when they were able to talk to each other. Yuto was upset that he wasn't there in Heartland to help his friends, but never said anything about how he didn't want to be stuck in Yuya's body. When they learned that Leo knew about Yuya, Yuya wanted to find out if he knew why they merged, but not to undo it.
Yuya and Yuzu effectively being permanent fusions felt in line with how the Dimensional War changed everything for every dimension. Heartland was still in ruins, Academia was defeated after their brainwashed children army nearly destroyed everything, Synchro had become one after nearly tearing itself apart, Standard had been reborn as the Pendulum Dimension and they were all linked together as an after effect of the Zarc battle. Nothing could go back to the way it was and the counterparts staying merged together, along with Reira being a baby, matches with that instead of being the odd ones out. It is a shame that the series gets so much hate for its ending when I think it wraps up the storyline better than people give it credit for. I would have loved an epilogue to see how the characters handle these changes, but the point was that they were able to step towards their future with courage and a smile.
The Synchro arc was good, easily my favorite arc of the series, and it truly baffles me that people then and now think it's filler. So much important stuff happens in this arc. We had character development for Yuya, Reira, Sora, Serena and Shun. We had more screentime to flesh out Yugo's personality, give insight into his relationship with Rin and even his friendship with Yuzu. There was some major setup for Zarc like with the first attempt at the Dragon Boys merging together. Roger was still connected to Academia. Yuya using his entertainment dueling to save the City was to show that his dream of ending the war with his dueling wasn't so far out of his reach. Not to mention we had plenty of great duels and moments throughout the arc.
I think fans were kind of like Shun in that they wanted to jump right into facing Academia and/or they wanted to spend more time in Heartland, thinking it was more important than it was for the storyline. A big reason why I think we could spend a year in Synchro was because at the time, it was the dimension we knew the least amount. We already spent season one in Standard and we got a decent insight into both Fusion and Xyz, but we knew nothing of Synchro. There was a lot more worldbuilding and characters that they could introduce in a dimension that was not aware of the war compared to the one already destroyed by it. Even the pacing was fine since every episode was important for story and/or character reasons. I don't think that you could cut down the Synchro arc significantly to give more episodes to the later arcs, certainly not without losing a lot of important moments and character development.
The legacy characters were handled fine for the most part. I'm somewhat surprised that people thought that they took up screentime away from the Arc V cast when I never got that impression at the time or in any of my rewatches. They all felt like prominent supporting characters instead of taking up roles that could be given to other characters. Even now, you'd be hard press to find much attention for any Arc V character that isn't one of the counterparts and maybe Shun. The complaint about how they don't explain why these legacy characters are here is strange to me when Arc V is clearly set in its own timeline. I would say that was the case with the original world, but even if you want to say it was the future of the established timeline, the world had a hard reboot once the four dimensions were created, so a new timeline would have been created by that point at least. Granted, aside from the first three series and the Rush Duel series, I strongly believe the each YGO series is set in its own universe anyway, so just seeing these as AU versions of characters from older series that happen to show up in this universe is easy to roll with. Still, I love how the legacy characters fit within Arc V's world while still having details that long time fans could pick up on. It made them feel both accessible for fans who hadn't seen the other series and fanservice to long time fans.
Yuzu gets a pretty bad reputation as a damsel in distress, which is a shame. I'm not surprised this is the case when she is separated from the cast for most of the series and not dueling at all past her brief tag duel with Sora was a huge mistake. But I always think that fans do her a disservice by saying that she was fridged or just there for Yuya to save when her impact on the story and various characters was huge. Without Yuzu, Serena wouldn't have found out the truth about Academia, Sora wouldn't have been able to break free from Academia, Shun would have been carded without Serena going to find him and Yugo might have been more of a wild card without knowing about Yuya or Academia. She also doesn't get enough credit for saving the world twice, even if was unknowingly with preventing the Dragon Boys from merging. Even when she reaches out to Yuya during the Zarc battle, it worked in large part because the show established just how important they are to each other, so it doesn't feel one sided or unearned. Even near the end of the series, Yuya said that he wanted to save Yuzu and Reira who had saved them, which I think fits with how they had been helping each other throughout the series. I'm not saying that there weren't problems with how Yuzu was handled, but that I think calling her a damsel in distress does her a disservice.
Leo Akaba is a good villain, my second favorite of the series next to Zarc. I never felt like he was forgiven, but realized that he messed up. He already felt responsible for the fate of the original world, so seeing that his actions nearly did the same thing would have made him realized that he was in the wrong. Even his actions prior to that made sense. He was effectively a father grieving for his loss child. Nothing and no one else mattered to him other than Ray. Not Reiij, Himika or anyone in the four dimensions. To him, they weren't real, so it was all the easier to justify brainwashing children as his personal army, using carded people as fuel and merge them back into one. That didn't make him stupid, but just completely blinded by his grief and obsession, which made him a lot more interesting than I initially thought he would be. It also helps that he really gets nothing in the end. After all of his efforts to revive Ray, he doesn't get any moment to interact with her or find closure. All of his efforts to get his daughter back led to nearly destroying the world again and afterwards, he's left with nothing. While he's standing with his family in the finale, I don't think that necessarily mean he'll be welcomed back with open arms. I prefer the notion that he stays in Fusion to try to undo the damage he did there as best as he could.
As for the manga, I don't think it was good. That wasn't because of the ending, although that certainly didn't help, but I think it was pretty lackluster beyond its artwork. The characterizations for the cast never clicked with me. Manga Yuya is just okay, Manga Yuzu is just girl, Manga Reiji is more antagonistic and the other Dragon boys are just there. We get to see Yuya, Yuto, Yugo and Yuri interact with each other, which is what fans really wanted, but when they all have such different personalities and they all revolve around Yuya, it doesn't mean much. The story itself, from what I remember at least, was just a poor way to handle a time travel story. It felt convoluted and hard to follow. None of the manga original characters stood out either. If it wasn't for the good artwork and the Dragon boys interacting with each other, I don't think fans would have cared much for this manga.
The problem wasn't that the manga was different from the anime. I wanted it to be different and it had to be different since covering the anime in a monthly manga series wouldn't work. The problem was that the changes it made to the cast made them far less engaging and interesting than they were in the anime. I adore anime Yuya and being indifferent at best to his manga version is a huge redflag in itself. With the other spin-off manga, I can enjoy them as alternate takes to the cast and they do make some good/interesting changes to the stories and characters. I can't say the same for the Arc V manga. I did drop the series after the infamous gropping scene, which was gross then and now. Making Yuzu into Yuya's future mother would have been a poor choice regardless, but it feels especially gross after that scene and how she nearly confessed to him in the last chapter. Manga Yuzu's only role in the manga being the future mother of the real protagonist is undoubtedly the most sexist garbage writing I've ever seen from this franchise and that is disturbingly impressive.

my hot take is that i really dont mind the prevalence of legacy characters in the plot. my issue comes from the fact that they threw in these legacy characters and then didnt elaborate at all on them and why theyre here at all (besides the surface level gimmick of recalling older series). i think having a cast full of legacy character couldve worked if there was more explanation to how the split worked. did the split just create new timelines? did it just happen to throw around people from the past into the new dimensions? did it break the structure of time itself? maybe its just the worldbuilder in me speaking but at least for me a lot of the story would be massively elevated by giving us explanations to things that are so noticeable. my hotter take is that i also dont mind the fact that zarc is such a nebulous imprecise concept of a guy that haunts the narrative, and the fact we dont know much of anything about him elevates the fact that hes no longer a person and instead of just Something because zarc as the pro duelist that once was is plain dead
Estrogen would've saved Yuya. My evidence is Cross Duel, White Wing Magician and Pendulum Witch. Cross Duel has girl Odd-Eyes gijinka, when previously humanized as Double Iris Magician, Odd-Eyes was male. White Wing is a similar argument. Pendulum Witch has the same outfit and background as Performapal Pendulum Sorcerer. Both Pendulum Witch and the Odd-Eyes gijinka are expressing an unmitigated level of joy, likely due to their transition.
On top of this, Yuya is portrayed as heavily impacted by his depression in Season 1 and 2 especially. If his monsters are an extent of himself, which his heart seems to be able to transition many of his cards into Pendulums, who's to say his own heart is also in need of a transition.
Honestly, if they would've split the Yu boys and the bracelet girls apart by the end of the series, it would've been higher in my Yugioh anime rankings.
Both anime / manga spoilers here 👇 sorry OP I love to rant
More people should research DID and atleast consider portraying post-canon Yuya as a system instead of just giving all of the Yuboys their bodies back. Bc although I get wanting them to all have their own individual bodies, its rare that there are characters who share bodies that *don't* get split up at the end.
Plus, awareness for these things are little-to-none so it'd be really really nice to see others portray it ... don't be scared to just bc ur not a system. You can talk to systems or do research. It'd be so fun to see more peoples takes on it!!! (I am an OSDD system. If you would like to know any of my experiences I can share with you.)
I also just rlly wish they did more with yuya/yuto as a system in the show. In the manga, the boys systemhood (even tho its magical DID) is really fun tbh and I love it so much...
I feel like I never see people discuss the ending past "FUCK leo akaba" (fair) and "why didn't the boys get their bodies back" (nuance) and I wish there was more discussion on it past that esp since Layra is imho the character done worst by the ending. Sorry . FUCK Himiko Akaba too.
I think Sora is a really good character who is incredibly mischaracterized by a lot the fandom. Either characterizing him as overtly feminine and has done nothing wrong, or just say stuff like "hes a war criminal though." Missing the entire point of his character being that he was an unloved child who was forced to commit atrocities without question bc he never knew anything else. Does not help Konami hates his ass
Also uhhh h hh h its ok to portray him in feminine clothing (bro i put him in a dress so much) but I want people to also remember he was forced to hurt. So . So many people.
Ok spitballing opinions/hcs time
I think Tsukikage is funny and I like him
Odd Eyes is a girl and so is Clear Wing
I wish that Konami let the director tell more of the story he wanted w/o (everyone agrees with this probably. Cold take.)
The hate for Arc V is probably overblown in western spaces bc the people who watched the original YGO dubs forgot how unfaithful they are and grew up so they didn't have the nostalgia goggles for especially the dub
Yuya/Sora/Zuzu is a love triangle you cannot convince me otherwise (sora telling yuya to watch out so someone else doesn't take zuzu?...while hes meeting up with zuzu alone..?... yuya's dream about sora. What the..🏳️🌈)
---- actual card game intermission ----
Fluffals are in a good spot as an engine? But Frightfurs need new extra deck monsters. Probably along the lines of Predaplant Ambulomelides but w/ search conditions being locked to on fusion summon. (W/ sabretooth that'd create a fucked up loop if it didn't lol) and/Or another monster with some level of protection.
The deck only rlly has edge imp scythe and 3 fusion mat sabretooth which are both great cards but.. We have half a negate . Modern decks have sooo much more protection. And like you can go off-archetype and get a little bit more protection but at what point does it stop using frightfurs entirely :/
And PLEASE REPRINT OTHER CARDS THAN JUST CHAIN / PATCHWORK. ITS BEEN 9 YEARS SINCE A FLUFFAL PENGUIN PRINTING. PLEAAAAAAAASE I don't wanna pay 15 for a playset...
Windwitch desperately needs more cards!! Wayy more than fluffal. (Fluffal has a lot of cards that do nothing but in comparison to windwitch thats like going to a buffet)
They should unban heavymetalfoes
Pendulums aren't all that complex you guys just don't want to read
Ok Yeah. What were they thinking w/ the original pend format . I can see why this turned people off of ygo originally but it WAS just fixed w/ link format.
Altho, I hate that pend decks just have to also be a link deck now ,😭 luckily beyond/exceed are great but. Man. (Also there should be more link monsters that are pend support)
---- end of actual card game intermission ----
YUGO is the dogboy. YUYA is a CATBOY.(? Is this what i'd assign him as an animal? Yeah maybe..? or a bird. Resplendent Quetzal. Oh but hes really a dragonboy to me.. but aside that.)
If you ask me to, i'll assign any arc v character a bird. (<- bird autism)
Bird Opinion: I like Lyrilusc's designs wayyy over Raid Raptors. I get the design reasoning of them but I just luv how cute the lyriluscs are🐦⬛ (also in general I just like song birds over raptors...)
We NEED to retire conversation on the manga's Bonus Chapters especially on ANIME TIMELINE ship art 😑
I also hate how nobody wants to discuss the manga bc of the bonus chapters making things retroactively very. Uh. weird . Theres more to talk about y'know.. miu my friend miu(<- one track mind) and also a lot of the outfits there were really cute..
That being said Shin Yoshida is bad at writing women and thats fair to criticize
The manga art style is really cute
I wish the G.O.D. cult kept their scars at the end of the manga bc scars are badass (and yea. I love Sora's looking like he had wings that were torn off thus representing him as a fallen angel)
More Poppo Fanart Now
"Can you not talk about Sora Gege" "no" I think its sad he didn't have a sibling in the anime. He has such older brother energy esp since his designs a bit of a callback to Leo 5ds. I will add Miu to every timeline somehow. Its my duty.
And uhhh
And . Bisexual (i'd say cold take but i'm sure theres someone out there who thinks the guy is completely straight)
Definitely have mixed feelings on them sharing a body at the end. Tbh, I wanted to explore more with Yuya and yuto being fused and seeing yuto front more.
and yesssss please do ur research in general esp when writing heavy topics.
Fuck Henrietta and someone deregressage Riley rn plzzzz
definitely, yes he is a war soldier, but he is a CHILD. A child who had no other choice. Tbh none of the kids had a choice.
no comment on the dress thingy bc I havent draw him yet lol
Moonshadow silly bean
I think odd eyes is a boy but I agree on female clear wing!
Personally don’t ship it (bc I feel like Sora is too young mentally and physically for any of this-) but I can see it!
not gonna reply to the card games thoughts bc I don’t play lol
objection- Yuya is the dog magnet, Yugo is the sugar glider magnet, Yuto is the birb magnet and Yuri is the cat magnet
assign them birbbbbbb all of rhemmmm /nf
they’re definitely cuter lol
don’t like Yuzu as Yuya’s mom just bc of them being the same age in the anime and it felt weird to me but everything else was fine!
miu my poor child…
the art style is adorableeee
yessssss
GIVE ME MORE OF THE DAMN POPPO PLEASEEEE
idea for you- make Zane and Syrus his older brothers. Peak angst.
like thinking he’s cis for some reason but I can see it!
either he’s straight, pans, or bi. Idk, he’s some flavor of it LMAO
Even if we don't agree on everything i'm glad to have discussion
I do wanna say Soras not THAT much younger than Yuya/Zuzu, only a year. 13 Sora 14 Yuya/Zuzu
Imho hes short bc of malnourishment (vaguely gestures to my Sora backstory where I just make shit up.) He did kind of bum around with the junior league guys for a while before he weaseled his way up to Yuya tho, so I think its understandable to think hes way younger than he is
Ik he’s like only a year younger but like mentally, I doubt romance was in his head, mainly just attachment? Which can be smiliar ig but u get what I’m saying lol
he’s def short bc of malnourishment or he lies abt his age. One of the two ig.
There is nothing wrong with the theme, I like them well enough. I just think that Yuya should’ve replaced them with more pendulum magicians to show that he is becoming more himself rather than use more of his father’s archetype
The Dragon boys are not fully organic humans. It's established in the anime that Real Solid Vision monsters have things like body temperature and react to external stimuli (like light in their eyes making pupils contract). So it's able to mimick biological functions. Add in the fact that none of the dragon boys was actually born (no biological parents).
My idea is that when the Dimensions split, Zarc's body also split in four, and his DNA got mixed in with the DNA of his dragons, as they were all physically fused as a single entity at the time. So each Dragon boy has a DNA that's a mix of Zarc+whichever Dragon they use, and their bodies are at most 1/4 actual flesh and blood while the rest is Real Solid Vision that mimicks it. It would also explain how they just fade away from existence instead of dropping dead whenever one of them gets absorbed into the other, as well as their stupid physical toughness (RSV is invulnerable to anything that's not also RSV, as it was established in the show).
The bracelet girls have different mechanics because their creation was the result of the Four Natural Energies (the Kaatsu Fugetsu thing), so they are fully organic but re-enforced (which is how Yuzu got away from that duel with Sergei mostly unscathed while that fall really should have killed her. Hell, Sergei drops from a significantly shorter height, and I don't know if you watched the sub or dub, but in the sub when he hits the ground his body breaks in half and he's left with nothing from the waist down, so the body-builder cyborg is less physically durable than Yuzu.)
As for decks, it's all but stated in the show but I think Zarc used to run a full Magician deck.

-Zarc's soul being sealed in baby Reira was dumb. I said it. You really had no other ideas, writers?
-I don't hate the Zarc-Yuya monster form but it would have been 1000x better with Zarc's own body as the base rather than Yuya's, the more fanart I see of that concept the more I love it
The last Duel should Zarc vs Yuya. I want to see Zarc accepting the truth and leaving peacefully, instead of being stuck in Reira and would be able to wake up anytime
Oops me finding out there's a ton of overlap between reasons why people hate Arc-V and reasons why I love it. Xyz summoning some controversial opinions here
I might be the only person who thinks the Synchro Arc is peak and the story would be incomplete without it. Although I shouldn't be surprised since it's basically the Doma arc from DM and people think that's pointless too
