Why are there just blobs of fake rubber meat that a bunch of unrelated microbes can build in the dirt but they've only ever been found in china and can't be classified any further than "biological objects"
Late night rendezvous.
still drives me up the wall that gideon kissed harrow's forehead. like mind you she still hated harrow up until the pool scene and was mad at her for not making things clear and hiding things and keeping her in the dark. and yet her first thought after hearing all of harrow's agonies was to kiss her forehead and touch her face. like i dont even mean this in a wow so romantic way necessarily, i mean thats such an intimate way to react to someone. not just hugging her but literally kissing her forehead and pushing the hair from her temple after VOWING you hate her fucking guts. its such a raw and impulsive and genuine reaction and it makes me want to dig a grave for myself
It's a benediction :)

maiden in need of rescue!!! what a horrible terrifying dragon!!!!
recurring dead wife flashback where it becomes increasingly apparent that the person remembering her has dishonestly claimed a romantic dynamic to their relationship that never actually existed and erased any conflict that ever existed between them now that she's no longer able to say no to them
dead wife flashback where each time we see her she looks more confused and upset by how she's remembered, then desperate and furious, until she's hammering on the glass screaming to be let out
this isn't how it happened. you know this isn't how it happened. but you still keep coming back, keep disturbing my grave so you can play out your fantasies. voyeurs crowding around my autopsy, straining for the best view; pawing through my entrails like grubby butchers trying to find some golden meaning in blood and shit because you can't bear to face the cold light of truth. you just can't bear the thought of never having really known me at all.
my general opinion on what people should be "allowed" to portray and what topics they should be "allowed" to explore in fiction is that you can make whatever art with whatever themes you want but i'm also allowed to think the way you handled it was tasteless and should've been done differently. my negative opinion on your handling of sensitive topics is the price of admission for publicly showcasing your work. this is not a pro-censorship stance because i am not The Government

one of the reasons ive always emphasized flesh mages as Flesh Mages and not, say, healers, is because of shit like this:
transcript in ALT text
"what the fuck did he do?" you may ask. well its quite simple really. he gave his wounds to someone else. basically the opposite of what flesh magic is usually used for, which is shouldering some of the pain and accelerating the healing of someone else.
"doesnt flesh magic hurt a lot though? how is he lucid enough for that???" he cant feel pain. next question
(i actually cant think of another question its. 3am. yet again)
(my sleep schedule is never fixing itself at this rate)

Elena lives in the Compact. She doesn't have to work, she has a compiler that'll spit out whatever fetish gear she fancies, and she's happily independent. Everything's going great â except her love life. She's bounced from relationship to relationship, and none seem to stick. No one's fault, things simply don't work out, and so she spends many a night alone, at home, wrapped up in latex and watching the lewdest streamer she can find. Until she meets Ophrys Boquila, Third Bloom, at a game night hosted by a mutual friend. The fashionable affini, perhaps unusually, seems happy to merely date Elena, but Elena wonders if that can work. Affini are Affini, after all, and the urge to domesticate seem to be so deeply ingrained as to be unshakeable. What does it mean to let yourself fall in love with an affini like you would anyone else â and what will become of Elena if she does?
I always try to avoid speaking in superlatives when it comes to HDG, because there are so many incredibly talented authors and artists in the space, but when the question of "Greatest of all time" comes up, I don't think there are many less controversial picks than Kanagen. She's been writing HDG for over four years; No Gods No Masters is rightfully considered one of the foundational texts of the entire setting; Floret in the Mirror was foundational for what the digital compact could be; she spearheaded the concept of "nothocultures"; she wrote one of the two definitional "affinification" stories; and through it all, she has yet to produce a single work that falls below the level of "absolutely incredible".
Lacuna? Lacuna is absolutely fucking incredible. A masterclass in slow-burn frog-boiling, with a killer hook and immaculate execution, this might genuinely be my favorite story in Kanagen's world-class roster. It's that good.
Mild spoilers ahead.
Oh you were a gifted child and now you're a loser? Well I was supernaturally experimented on alongside 12 other abducted children and became the lone survivor and dubbed "The Lost Sibling" and now I'm the assistant manager at a struggling small town Wendy's
rlly fascinating phenomenon to me is when a character is extremely popular, and that popularity seems understandable enough because they've got something interesting going on, and then you look at the fandom and realize 99% of their fans don't actually care about engaging with any of the things that make them interesting and instead seem to be fans of an imaginary milquetoast version that exists solely for ship and/or angst content and is so far removed from the canon character they might as well be an unrelated OC at this point

joining the war on kids reading any book they want on the side of kids reading any book they want. simply you will be fine. it's even good to be confronted with things you don't understand and even find upsetting, uncomfortable and difficult. it's a surprise tool that will help you later.

literally ok so not a funny story but kind of funny? when I was nine I encountered rape in a book and I was like hey mom whatâs this mean and she explained it and I was like oh. gross. and then like two weeks later a girl on the bus abruptly disclosed her csa and we were all like ????? what ???? but I was like wait hang on thereâs a word for that âď¸đ¤Â and explained what it meant and that it was illegal and that you could talk to a teacher or my mom if it had happened to you and everyone was like ohhhhh I see I see and very somberly comforted the girl (she was safe she was removed from her home and living with my neighbor at the time so it wasnât Urgent)
And this is a perfect illustration of why it is important for kids to read or variety of things, and why abusers donât want them to.
If you're writing anything involving cons, scams, heists, or morally questionable characters who are very good at lying, here are some free resources I've been using for research. Saving you the "why is this in my search history" anxiety.
1. The FBI's Famous Cases & Criminals archive (fbi.gov/history/famous-cases) has detailed breakdowns of real fraud cases, Ponzi schemes, and confidence operations. The language they use is clinical and precise, which is perfect for getting the procedural details right.
2. The FTC Consumer Sentinel Network publishes annual reports on the most common fraud tactics in the US. Great for understanding how modern scams actually work and what makes people fall for them.
3. The Smithsonian's American Art Museum has a free digital collection of forgery case studies. If your character forges documents or art, this is gold.
4. Court Listener (courtlistener.com) is a free legal database where you can read actual court transcripts from fraud trials. Want to know how a real con artist talks under oath? This is where you find out.
5. The Internet Archive's collection of old newspaper crime sections. Search for "confidence man" or "swindle" in papers from the 1920s through 1960s and you'll find incredible real stories that would feel too dramatic for fiction.
Bonus: The Psychology of Fraud section on the Association for Psychological Science website has accessible articles about why people trust, how deception works cognitively, and what makes someone a convincing liar. Essential reading if you want your con artist characters to feel psychologically real.
Reblog to save for later. Your WIP will thank you.
