“In an interview about Lux, Rosalía cited the Spanish poet and author Alana Portero as one of her inspirations, especially Portero’s encouragement to pray even absent belief as a means of “projecting yourself toward what’s beyond you.” This insight is reminiscent of Leslie Jamison’s memoir The Recovering, in which she describes shrugging off the assumptions of secular humanism to get sober. “I’d come to worship self-awareness,” writes Jamison. “Know thyself, and act accordingly.” But “what if you reversed this? Act, and know thyself differently.””

I think this shot from Ghost in the Shell is incredibly striking and evocative. We see the Major turn on her cloaking device, creating this gray, translucent outline around her while the city in the background remains perfectly in focus. I also like the contrast the shot creates — the Major is literally becoming less visible while the city behind her remains crystal clear. It's one of those shots that sticks with you long after the movie is over.
This shot isn’t simply cool for cool’s sake. It ties into one of the main theme’s of the film: identity. Throughout Ghost in the Shell, the Major questions who she really is and where the boundary lies between her physical body and her sense of self. Here, her body literally begins to disappear until only a faint outline remains. It's a simple visual metaphor for someone whose identity is becoming increasingly difficult to define.
