My pro tip as an almost 30 y/o who's been online since I was 11 is don't trust some random person on social media and always practice source criticism. I've definitely learned a lot from lived experiences on tumblr and other websites, but I've also been misinformed by people in the past. I think we need to look more at actual research (and we need to learn how to read and analyse research, because a lot of people don't know how). We need to look more at grown adult people with this disorder who's also been diagnosed/treated for years and therefore has knowledge about it. A newly diagnosed 20 y/o person is not the place to look for info, honestly. We need to listen to expert professionals who've got years of experience in the field of treating DID. We need to read books by these people

Like, I personally struggle with reading - especially about complex dissociation since it's triggering - but we fucking need to get some actual facts into the community. I feel like it's mostly misinformed kids/young adults who are either newly diagnosed or undiagnosed who are trying to educate others on DID. The discussions (or "discourse") I see at least come across as pretty juvenile and also just the same talking points brought up over and over again

Most things are ableist, because we live in a structurally ableist world. Most of our core assumptions about value and hierarchy and correct behavior are ableist, because we live in an ableist society. So yes, "People on the internet go around calling everything 'ableist'" because everything is, in fact, ableist! Because systemic ableism is the water we fish all swim in!

But anti-ableist discourse often begins and ends with "It's ableist to say that people should do that because some people are disabled and can't do that." This kind of objection kind of... only touches the surface of systemic ableism. And it gives the impression of objecting to a valid generality with some kind of special pleading, which is just... beside the point. Any discussion of ableism centered on "There should be An Exception for Legitimately Disabled People" is just... an insufficient framework for addressing systemic ableism.

So you end up with someone saying "I said that people should eat their vegetables, and somebody called me ableist, because some disabled people can't eat vegetables! Isn't that ridiculous? Obviously I'm not talking about people who legitimately can't! I'm talking about people who are too lazy to try! These 'anti-ableism' people take things ridiculously too far!" And. Like. "Some disabled people can't eat vegetables" only touches the surface of why saying "People should eat their vegetables" is ableist in the first place.

Why is eating certain foods being framed as an obligation that someone needs a "legitimate excuse" to opt out of? What underlying beliefs about health, diet, nutrition, and morality are built into your premises about what people "should" eat? Why does the spectre of the person who "Doesn't take care of their health because they're lazy" bother you? What function does judgment of this real or hypothetical person serve? Do someone else's food choices affect anyone else? Even if you can come up with a way that someone else's food choices can theoretically affect other people, is that the real reason why you're judging them? Or are you reacting to a lifetime of cultural messages around health moralizing and judgment of "laziness" and "excuses" all of which are rooted in systemic ableism and then retroactively justifying it with an ad-hoc claim about "Well uh... uh... the environmental impact of food production!"? Cool, but is that the real reason you've constructed this image of a Lazy, Unhealthy Person With Bad Health Habits to get angry at?

My mom’s stepdad was married to a schizophrenic woman in the 80s, long story short, her sanity got worse over time and she started to get violent towards her children, so he sent her to a mental asylum.

I know that she spent at least a year there, mental asylums in Brazil were so bad that my mom’s stepdad started noticing it and got her out. I don’t know a lot about her but I feel so sorry for how she was treated.

Also no one is obligated to go to therapy or get better. Especially when much of it demonizes personality disorders or lacks education on it and a lot of therapy is very flawed in america. But I'm not too coherent to give a decent rant about that. Also I'm not your bipolar diagnosed dad lol, weird connection to make since I don't have bipolar disorder.

Also a disorder didn't make him abusive sweetie. My bipolar friends are great. And bipolar isn't a cluster b personality disorder btw. It's a mood disorder. You do know that, right? Bpd is borderline personality disorder, sweetums. Anyway, many factors contribute to abuse. And his disorder can play a part in it, but it didn't make him abusive. Also personality disorders come from situations like being abused. So who knows, maybe you could have one yourself? It's not uncommon. Abuse (or childhood trauma in general) is a main or prominent cause of personality disorders including the cluster b ones you so don't like.

Anyway, maybe focus more on healing than a random Tumblr user that wrote about their experiences. They're not excuses. I can't even fucking move out let alone get therapy without their help and the last few therapists I had made me want to kill myself and blamed me for my abuse by being bratty and entitled.

Cluster B's don't exist to be palatable to you. We have a disorder. Whatever relationship someone has with therapy is none of your business. Your boundaries are important, your trauma is valid, but the ableism is not and really you should work on your hatred of cluster B's and why you feel such anger towards them when it sounds like you weren't even abused by one considering you only mention your abusive dad having bipolar, not a cluster b. Anyway. When I was in high school, I was friends with this guy named Frank. That's not his real name but that doesn't matter. And maybe 'friends' is a strong word. He was in my class and he was really cool to talk to, but we've never been like super close or hung out outside school. I don't think he was especially close with anyone in particular, but he was on good terms with literally everybody. Like he had a great sense of humour and just had this like positive energy that's in painfully short supply when you're in high school. So everyone loved the guy. I mean, you couldn't not love him. He was genuinely radiating with positivity. Anyway Frank was disabled and used a wheelchair — and he wasn't just an ambulatory wheelchair user, either, he was fully paralysed from the chest down. Not to say that ambulatory wheelchair users don't deserve the same amenities, just... Yeah. Anyway our school was in this old building, ~100 years old at the time we were there. It had two levels and to get to the first floor you had to, obviously, walk up the stairs.

Our school also had a disabled elevator. It was this new thing in this old building — covered in glass and very modern for the time. So people like Frank had to take that elevator a few times a day to get to their classes on the first floor. But the elevator used power, which used money. And because school administration were so terrified students would use the elevator for non-emergencies (read: able-bodied students would take the disabled elevator), it was generally turned off and to turn it on and use it, you needed to go to the janitor and ask for the elevator key, which they only gave you if they deemed you disabled enough to warrant using that school elevator. So me and Frank are friends, right? And every now and then I take the elevator with him, and go to the janitor for that key with him. And he does this every damn day. Every day he comes in to school and goes like 'yup! still disabled!' and gets that stupid key because otherwise what? god forbid they leave that elevator turned on so their disabled students can use it without having to go halfway across the building to get the key for it. But you know, it was an important safety measure. To control the electricity consumption— I mean to make sure no able-bodied students used that elevator! which was only for emergencies and disabled people! Like that was a thing they were genuinely scared of: that people will use that elevator and it will be busy when an actual disabled person needs it.

But here's the thing. Aside from how fucking absurd that fear is, here's the thing. Our school had just one floor. Ground floor, first floor, nothing more. The most you had to climb was literally just one single flight of stairs. It took ten, maybe fifteen seconds if there was a lot of people in the hall. If you were in a hurry, it was probably like three or four seconds. The elevator, on the other hand, was very slow. Most of those disabled elevators are. I took it several times, with a friend who was disabled or when I sprained my ankle, and... It sucked. It was a pretty modern elevator, but it was painfully slow considering it was travelling the distance of just one single flight of stairs. And that's just it: this elevator was not appealing at all. If given the choice between the stairs or the elevator, everyone would choose the stairs. The only people who would actually use this elevator were the people who needed it. There was absolutely no reason to have it turned off under that stupid lock and key and make disabled students retrieve that key from the janitor every day. But the school did it anyway. Because otherwise they were risking losing some money. Or an able-bodied person using an elevator.
