Egon Schiele Hermits 1912
This rare double portrait shows Schiele and his mentor, Gustav Klimt (1862-1918), standing together, nearly as one. For all the similarities in their art, Schiele spent much of his career seeking to break free of Klimt’s influence. Never one for modesty, Schiele positions Klimt in the background, blind and mostly hidden, as if being consumed by the younger artist. The resulting form evokes the image of a single dark figure, indicating the confident successor Schiele assuming the mantel of the old master.
i love that charles dickens got paid by the word. like i cant even be mad when he’s boring and long-winded bc i would do xactly the same??? i wouldnt use contractions or colours at all. want to say the word red? too bad. we r now only using “the colour of freshly-spilled blood on snow; the hue of the horizon when the sun sets over the deserts of sub-saharan Africa” BOOM guess who can afford 2 eat now: me and my boi dickens
What I love about Alexandre Dumas, in contrast, is he got paid by the line. So it’s not really wordy, it more like 80% dialogue which makes it sound pretty modern but also ends up like-
“Where are we going now?”
“We are going to the city.”
“Which city?”
“Paris.”
“We are going to Paris?”
“Yes.”
Unknown Flemish Master, detail, Head of Medusa, 1600
Raised by wolves, Jim Goldberg
Star Wars is not here for your armor misconceptions. In a response that’s getting some digital ink, the official Star Wars page’s reply to a clueless comment on Phasma’s armor. Just say no to actually dangerous boob-plates!
“not to be sexist” [what follows is completely sexist]
