I just learned about this recently from a Viking reenactor! Indigo dye isn't blue until it oxidizes, so when you dye with indigo your cloth or thread doesn't come out of the water blue, it comes out and then reacts with the oxygen in the air and seems to spontaneously turn blue in front of your eyes. It's a really cool process to witness.

Its kilns flourished during the Tang (618-907 CE) and Song dynasties(960–1279 CE), peaked in the Yuan and Ming periods, and remain famous today, particularly for their white porcelain. Fired at high temperatures, the unglazed porcelain exhibits a smooth, jade-like texture, appearing crystal-clear and pure white.

Dehua white porcelain is renowned for its "high-toughness thin-bodied高韧薄胎瓷衣" technique, a breakthrough in ceramic craftsmanship that achieves exceptional strength in ultra-thin structures. This technology enables the creation of porcelain pieces with egg-shell thinness (0.2–0.5 mm) while maintaining remarkable durability, making it a hallmark of Dehua's artistry. However, not every piece of Dehua white porcelain employs this technique, as it involves significantly higher production costs.

so in the victoria & Albert museum's huge ceramics gallery which people never seem to know about, there was a temporary exhibition by a 4th generation porcelain worker from dehua & some of her work v which particularly took me out were these books - books which looked as if they had hand pressed paper pages with ragged edges, being tugged open and ruffled by the breeze. they looked like a film still. they looked light as air. there was a drapery of fine silk fluttering as well. ALL PORCELAIN.

I just want to say that for years I really missed roller derby, it held an extremely special large part of my heart. I also held a resentment for how things ended in the past, and my return in 2020 held a powerful duality. I was making new connections with recruits, but also felt a weird energy from the prior athletes that I played with, it felt like there was a resentment from them. I've always felt like there was something that happened within the league that I wasn't aware of, like there was some rumor that had been spread about me or some grave misunderstanding that had taken place. How could a space where I felt like I wholly belonged be rejecting me at every turn. I'd hang out with a small group, with a very positive experience, people laughing fully at jokes, stating they were hooking me up with a family member, promises for later hang outs, only to be completely ghosted by them by next week? Something was always a miss, but I've always missed it with my whole heart. Earlier this year while into my fitness journey I heard about a new league forming in my area and I went to the meeting feeling gung-ho about joining and starting this chapter in my life again, I went to a group meeting, ran into some old faces, was fully engaged and involved in the ideas of helping the league. The idea was recruitment wasn't set to start for another 6-12 months so I expected a meeting, maybe some team building stuff until we had a space and had some more members, but then come to find out practices were starting almost immediately, I was invited to join because I was a veteran player and not a bambi legged skater looking to start a new journey. However practice nights were brought to a vote and by a small margin it was to occur on my LEAST convenient night. Had it been on a Thursday I would have gone, but I was voted out, and as much as I tried to work myself up to go, I didn't make it the first night, it was too hard to get to. Then I just lost all motivation for it. But honestly, something about that set me free. Since I decided that I wasn't going to go on Tuesday nights, I just....don't have the same desire to play anymore, I feel like lately I've been putting it completely behind me, and it feels like a closed door. After over a DECADE of yearning for this sport in my life, I'm in a place to say that I feel completely comfortable in NOT playing. I can't put my finger on it exactly, but I'm really done with the idea, done with playing, and whatever happened with my last league? Well it's annoying but it's not bothering me anymore. Something about this was a complete breakthrough and I can't place my finger on it, but I reached a moment where I just thought "You know....I don't need this in my life any more." and it wasn't even something that came from a place of anger (as I believe most of my breaking points do) I was just done. It's weird that such a weight has been lifted off of me for seemingly no reason, but I can't help but be incredibly grateful for it.

So! This is a perfect case study in situations where you should be wary of misinformation.

Take a moment and ask yourself, a project like this requires a lot of time, money and dedication of resources, why would scientists dedicate that time to something that could just be done by a tree?

The answer is they wouldn't. So that means this claim requires further investigation!

This project is called LIQUID 3, and it's not meant for cities with wide open spaces, it's meant for cities like Belgrade in Serbia. These cities are densely populated and heavily polluted, to the point where pollution actually chokes out current trees and makes creating green spaces difficult.

Liquid 3 was a PhD scientists answer to these problems. The microalgae tank is intended for spaces where you either:

Don't have enough space to plant full trees, or

Don't have enough time to plant trees and wait for them to grow up.

The tank is extremely efficient when you consider the amount of space needed compared to the amount of CO2 turned into oxygen. The tank can operate throughout the winter. And most importantly, it can be quickly set up in areas that desperately need relief from air pollution NOW not in 10 years when trees are done growing. Children currently suffocating on polluted air can't wait for trees to grow, they need to be taken care of now, and Liquid 3 is one of the ways to take care of them. Depending on the species of microalgea used, a number have shown a pretty amazing capacity to pull heavy metals out of the air which is something trees can get choked up by.

The tanks aren't just tanks either! Liquid 3 have solar panels placed on top, they have lighting and mobile phone charging, and they work as public benches. The designers of it want to encourage green spaces where there's room, but where there isn't room or time, Liquid 3 can step in. Realistically, this isn't a replacement for trees. It's replacing boring metal city benches with new, cooler benches that also clean the air (and have at least some heating during the winter).

Not only that, but the microalgea that grows is native to Serbia and all that microalgea has a ton of great uses! It makes for great fertilizer, compost, wastewater treatment, cleaner biofuels and even for helping create new tanks for further air purification. They only require a quick algae divide once a month, and the produced algae can be carted off to where ever it's needed. This makes them effective solutions for areas that can't sustain complex installations.

So yeah, there's actually quite a lot of places that would like these. Lots of people currently breathing in terrible quality air would much rather have their boring city benches replaced with really fucking cool algae tanks that clean the air and can be used to help create + sustain future green spaces in cities. I dunno about you, but I'd take that over a dumb metal bench any day. Put these at every bus stop and I'd be delighted.

Serbian here living in Belgrade! This is all true and I've actually seen some of these around the city a few times. They're amazing at what they do and really cool to watch up close because you can see pretty swirling inside them. It's not only functional but aesthetically pretty nice as well!
