Just watched the new Supergirl movie, have to talk about it
Minor spoilers
This felt like an origin story, not the origin of her as someone with powers but of her as a hero, which I thought was fantastic. Iâm a big fan of benoistâs supergirl, and alcockâs is obviously quite different, but it totally works with where theyâve placed her along the character arc, and is drawing from some different source material (woman of tomorrow) instead of older comics. And I havenât read woman of tomorrow (I know, oversight, Iâll get on that asap) but Iâve heard itâs pretty accurate to that source.
From what I can tell, this supergirl is closer to her kryptonian heritage, and itâs only been a few years since she landed on earth. She was older when Argo fell and the trauma is more recent, both good reasons why sheâs less put together. We see cw supergirl at a later point, after sheâs been socialized by an earthen family since her early teens, but if sheâd crashed to earth at the age she is in season one, you think she wouldnât have some unhealthy coping mechanisms? Are you telling me that the woman who threw Cat Grant off a building when under the thrall of red kryptonite and burned the eyes out of her uncleâs skull wouldnât have gone a little off the deep end under those circumstances?
Iâm not trying to compare the two, promise, just offer a counter to the people (my brother) who say this doesnât feel like the supergirl they know. This movie deserves to stand on its own. I really enjoyed it, and whether we get to see more of Milly Alcockâs Supergirl as a traditional hero or not, Iâm happy with what we have seen of her so far. It truly feels like a beginning, even if we donât see the rest
TLDR: I really liked the movie
