Time flows in a strange way on Sundays

The Olivetti-Montefiore Torah Curtain (Parokhet), Pesaro, Italy, 1620.

This very early Torah Ark curtain was embroidered in 1620 by Rachel Olivetti of Pesaro, on the occasion of her marriage to her husband, Judah Montefiore. Its focal point is a poem, embroidered between two arched columns, adorned with intricate vegetal and floral ornaments. Two family coats of arms appear below the text: a dove holding an olive branch, representing the Olivetti family, and a lion standing on a mountain, holding a flower, representing the Montefiore family (mount of flowers in Italian). The verse expresses praise for the marriage of the couple:

Popular in the 18th and 19th century, dance cards were used by women to record the names of their dance partners. It appears these cards were also used for a question-and-answer game requiring prospective dancers to answer a riddle before being granted a dance.

They said “before dinosaurs,” but we have a cave here that began forming between 450 million to 550 million years ago.

There are no bones in that cave. No fossils. No nothing.

That’s because this cave began forming before bones existed on land, and had only just started to exist in the ocean. Shellfish hadn’t evolved yet. Limestone, which forms many caves, was just starting to become a more prevalent rock.

“The striking difference was that while many of the African and Indian subjects registered predominantly positive experiences with their voices, not one American did. Rather, the U.S. subjects were more likely to report experiences as violent and hateful – and evidence of a sick condition. The Americans experienced voices as bombardment and as symptoms of a brain disease caused by genes or trauma.“
