The idea of “but everyone knows that” needs to stop.
I saw a post about someone chiding Millennials for not knowing about JKRowlings transphobia, and asking how it is at all possible that people can exist in the world and the internet and, you know, not know.
Which I mean, I get. It is so present in so many of my online spaces that it seems astounding that someone could simply be ignorant! It feels impossible!
But let me tell you a story:
I went on a girls trip with a bunch of friends. All of us are rather incredibly liberal and all of us are incredibly online.
One girl would not stop talking about Harry Potter.
At one point, another girl asked her why she was ok with supporting it, and she had no real clue that JK Rowling was at all transphobic. She had heard that she likes to support Lesbian causes and thought “oh ok cool!” And that was it. She was AGOG with the news and rather horrified.
I must once again emphasize that she was an incredibly online person. She’s a foodie and a restaurant blogger.
Later in the trip we were picking restaurants and I suggested one I found on Google, and she gasped at me. Actually gasped, asking how I could ever be okay picking that one.
The shock must’ve been on my face, because she then told me all of the shitty things that restaurateur does. He abuses staff. Underpays them. Fires them on a whim. Is known for being one of the worst people to his employees in the entire restaurant business on this coast.
And she was so shocked I had never heard of this. Because in her mind, I was just as online as her. And in her online world, EVERYONE knew about this guy.
So I think the moral of this story is: always approach the other person with some empathy. Even online people, even people you think MUST know about how bad people are, may not have heard. It may truly be just them being on a different sphere of the internet than you.
So be gentle, be kind when letting people know they might not have heard about the cancellation of XYZ person. Don’t assume that everyone knows all the same info as you.
By all means, let them know so they can make informed decisions, but being kind will go a lot further than attacking them for some info they might not know yet.

They'll be ready. I expect so. They have a great teacher.
The duality of "If you even imply that being aro or ace condemns someone to a sad and lonely life I will fucking fight you"
and
"being aro and ace is the most isolating thing I will ever experience"

Aroace Ryland Grace Pics + Textposts Part Five
Parts One | Two | Three | Four
My various beloved pseudointellectuals on this website have pioneered a writing style I would call "postgrad chuuni"
A folder of PDFs is a type of cursed eyepatch.
Girl sees a joke post that casually gestures to something from her PDFs and she starts "gathering dark energy"
You've heard of multi-shipper now get ready for multi-headcanoner: where multiple interpretations of the same character coexist in your head and they are all great.
When Grace starts the "WHO AM I?" board, he writes "Carl... (foggy)", but when we come back to it at the end (before he's started erasing it to plan out going back to Rocky) it says "Carl... (fog )". I think there's a pretty obvious gap, and nothing surrounding it has been rubbed off. The last two letters of "foggy" have been intentionally erased.
The marine layer (fog) that hangs over the San Francisco Bay Area is named Karl. Seriously, a significant portion of Bay Area residents (especially millenial or younger) call the fog "Karl" in casual conversation. All the time. I've heard it. It is very confusing at first.
I don't think Grace ever remembered Carl well enough to be certain he existed. He erased the "-gy" in "foggy" because he thought maybe he was just thinking of the fog. He likes the fog. He still doesn't remember having one single true friend on Earth. He likes the fog.
this is actually like my third or fourth rodeo so i sort of get it but sort of dont
in some ways worse than my first rodeo cause i feel like i should be better at it by now

was like Grace with a plush Rocky that he can cuddle with 🥺... and then. yup.

Movie Stratt: "Please don't make it harder than it should be…"
Book Stratt: "STOP FUCKING CRYING, BITCH! WAAH, WAAH, WAAAAH! I DON'T WANT TO FUCKING HEAR IT!"
i have to reblog and add the prev tags:
#whats cool about the movie is that we get glimpses of the story outside of Rylands pov
#the book is entirely his pov and the few glimpses we DO get from other people they're all like “wait y'all are NOT fucking??”
#like yes her characterization is different to an extent but the book is filtered through Ryland who clearly has NO clue about anything
#(unless its at the end of a microscope)
#and its clear she kept him on and close (for strategic reasons) but also bc she saw his value in his humanity
#he cries he cares he moralizes and he reminds her of all the things she doesn't have the privilege of being bc they dont have time
#she makes HIM have conversations with the astronauts about their preferred method of suicide like cMON guys.
#like there is a dynamic there HE didn't clock or remotely want but other people did (I dont ship them thats just canon in the book)
#and a part of his character IS pushing people away and distancing himself and I think it'd be vert easy for his brain to -
#- in these distressing moments - immediately cast a horrible opinion of a woman who is still just trying to do her job
#she kept him on because she's a masochist and needed someone to remind her she is doing fucked up things even if it IS for the greater good
#when she does finally make the decision he will go to space she doesn't seem him for 4 days and then says horrible things to him
#like it never read to me that she hated him but that she was trying to convince herself as much as him that what she was doing was -
#- the only option. feelings and emotions aside.
#but the difference is there is no ryland grace beside her to offer counter balance and question her morality bc she's jetting him into spac
#idk their relationship in the book is so interesting and refreshing and its all so cool that its from graces pov
#and I think the movie did a good job of reminding us that she is just a person - even if to Ryland she is the stoic cold monster -
#- at times

ich liebe Parallelen
the thing that i adore the most about project hail mary is the fact that, after travelling god knows how far, saving multiple worlds, and living on an alien planet, grace ends the film not as some big hero, but as a teacher
its just so nice that the film sits there and says ‘ryland graces job as a teacher is important’, because its very common in these kinda films that the protagonist starts off as a teacher purely to give a bit of exposition before the government person shows up and goes ‘youre the best (insert science here)ist in the world, and we need your help to save the world’ or whatever, and i assumed at first that thats what this film was doing as well
but its not
grace starts the film as a teacher, he goes through the film as a teacher, and he ends the film as a teacher. he is a teacher to his students. he is a teacher to the astronauts. he is a teacher to rocky. and at the end of it all, he is a teacher to his students.
ryland grace saves both worlds not because he is some big hero, but because he is a teacher. and his reward at the end of it all is that he gets to keep teaching. and isnt that beautiful
