The evolution of NPC classes in D&D is fascinating, and I think it is best explored backwards.
In 3rd Edition there were five official NPC classes (with a sixth introduced in Eberron), and they were for the most part mundane, giving mechanics for various hirelings (expert), regular 1HD humanoids (warrior), and the traditional "primitive" humanoid spellcasters (adept), also answered the question "what if a 0-level character could gain levels at being 0-level?" (commoner).
2nd Edition had a more robust selection of less generic classes such as Apothecary, Blacksmith, and Cartographer, which used the delightful experience system of the game to gain levels by doing their professional tasks rather than adventuring ones. But once again these are mostly just for your hireling types.
It's 1st Edition where things get (or got) really crazy-go-nuts, with NPC classes such as Anti-Paladin, Witch, and Death Master, classes meant for NPCs of a more exciting sort. Some of them could technically used as player characters (not the Cloistered Cleric, as it has no XP progression whatsoever), but they were designated as NPCs probably to keep things interesting. And certainly I find merit in there being powerful NPC-types that don't just use the mechanics available to players. Keeps the world feeling a bit more mysterious, I guess.
What’s the difference between an NPC class and, say, like a monster stat-block that can be leveled up and down? I’m not understanding how an NPC class isn’t more than a very good monster stat block.

I think about this cake every day
sorry for exposing your tags but this is hilarious
OP, I hope you don’t mind me making an addition:
When I turned 17, we ordered a cake at the grocery store for my party, as we’d done many times before. If you wanted something written on the cake you’d write it into a section of the order form. We requested, very simply, “Happy Birthday Courtney”. When we went to pick it up the day of the party, this is what we got.
The bakery employees had absolutely no explanation for this. The order form, attached to the box, very clearly did not contain any of those extra names. Whomever had done the writing was no longer in, so there was no one to ask how this had happened. The fact that the name ‘Juan’ is misspelled bewilders me to this day. (I’ve never seen ‘Miley’ without the E, either, but it’s believable that someone might spell it that way.) Did this cake slip in from an alternate universe where I’m one quarter of a set of Hispanic quadruplets? Dyslexic Hispanic quadruplets, maybe?
This cake became the focal point of my party. At least two of my friends regularly called me ‘Courtney Mily Jaun Pablo’ for years to come. My siblings and I still reference it sometimes, eleven years later. It is probably the funniest thing ever to occur at any birthday celebration of my life, and may well remain so for the rest of my days.
I love a botched cake.
one time me and some pals spotted one of those big cookie cakes in a store. it was done up with red icing and little X's for kisses and in the middle it said
No One Like You
now, it took us a while to realise it meant "(there is) no one like you". at first, we all parsed it as a botched "no one like(s) you"
for ages after when we'd wind each other up we'd declare "NO ONE LIKE YOU ☹️👎"
I just feel like it's important to post the Sacred Texts
The Cake Wrecks blog is one that I miss.

It’s all corrupt girl
Art by Senju Horimatsu
The reason you can't be the next J R R Tolkien isn't because you don't have the talent, but because you're not the right kind of unwell. Tolkien wasn't bent for fantasy worldbuilding; he was bent for constructed languages, and got into fantasy worldbuilding in order to provide a material context in which to ground the notional evolution of the languages he invented. If you want to be the next Tolkien, you can't start with the worldbuilding; you've gotta find something extremely specific to fixate on, and develop it in such depth that inventing a world to contain it is genuinely the most logical next step.
#the best route is clearly to get really into a specific kink scenario and invent a world to justify it (via @salix03)
That's not even a joke. Developing a kink scenario so elaborate and so excruciatingly particular that it can only properly be contemplated in the frame of a world created specifically to contain it is genuinely closer to Tolkien's actual creative process than 99% of the stuff that plays at being heir to his legacy.
I know that Ea-nasir is like a meme these days but it is wild that we have complaint letters from 1750 BC. That's over three thousand years before the release of Belgian techno anthem "Pump Up the Jam".

blocked a couple anons who were really really personally impacted by my ~begging~ for some reason, so let’s talk about this.
first: you know that the content creators you follow are sex workers, right? who are putting time and effort and often money in, even if there isn’t something like an OF account or whatever legitimizes it in your mind? and work does imply like. money, often. i apologize if that idea is yucky for you, but you are in fact receiving things people have worked on and put effort into for free. so that’s neat for you! but perhaps you should consider living up to your leftist ideals and paying them.
second: even ignoring the work part. this is the Get Close To Artists website. right? and being a literal professional artist myself, in my normie job, i am putting a lot of things i spent years into learning into Posting. i am creating Art. yes? right? so you are tipping and buying merch and prints from your most beloved artists, right? right?
anything you are consuming, whether it is porn or illustrations or comedy or writing or anything, required time and effort and knowledge and experience and work. and i get that the internet has lessened that appearance, but here we are back to please remember that the people you follow are humans. no one is forcing you to support anyone. but what kind of entitlement do you have that you don’t want to?
Car-centric infrastructure pisses me off but it also pisses off car owners and they don’t even realize it.
Do you hate traffic? Yeah. It’s because of all the cars.
Do you hate noise? Yeah. It’s because of all the cars.
Do you hate so many people under the age of 30 dying? Yeah. It’s because of all the cars.
Do you hate lung and heart diseases? Yeah. It’s because of all the cars.
Why is suburbia boring? Because of all the cars.
Tired of having to drive around your elderly, young, and disabled relatives? Blame all the cars.
Tired of air and water pollution? Yeah a lot of that comes from cars.
Tired of potholes? It’s because there’s so many cars.
More severe flooding than there used to be? Because of all the asphalt for the cars.
Is your city losing money and can’t afford to maintain suburban sewer and sidewalks? Cars.
Your town keeps knocking down all its historic buildings to build more parking lots? Yeah I think you know what to blame. It’s the cars.
Wait how do cars pollute the water
Wear and tear on the roads and car tires degrading releases chemicals and microplastics that run off into the water supply when it rains
Also coolant and oil leaks, plus the oil spills in the ocean for gasoline
Yes but it’s important to point out that even electric cars can pollute the environment

I love episodes of Game Changer where the only way to win is by learning & the only way to learn is by playing. With some episodes, like Don't Wake Standards & Practices, the overall flow of the game becomes pretty apparent pretty quickly, & also there's some surprises along the way. But then there's episodes like Count the Rice, Deja Vu, or Bingo, where the basic conceit of what the game even is is an ongoing mystery. I love that stuff.
