Relationships: Robin Buckley & Steve Harrington
Summary:
Steve's older half-sister calls out of the blue with a big favor to ask
or
Steve and Robin decide to adopt Steve's unborn niece or nephew
Notes:
I based this one shot on a text post from @gloomysoup, I didn't copy the idea exactly as they wrote it, but I did steal the general concept, lol, I just couldn't resist writing it.
Read it on AO3 above or read the full thing below the cut π
Robin lounged across the couch, legs stretched across Steveβs lap. They were joking about the contestants making fools of themselves on Family Feud.
βUgh,β Robin grimaced mockingly, βwhere are your parents?β
Steve laughed and shrugged. βWho knows at this point.β
Just then, the phone on the hall table began to ring, drawing both Robin and Steveβs attention. βWouldnβt it be wild if that was them?β Robin whispered.
βI doubt it.β Steve shoved Robinβs legs off of his lap and stood up from the couch.
She gaped at him. βHey!β
βMove, then,β he snarked back, earning a middle finger in return.
The phone continued to ring sharply until Steve reached it and lifted it from the base. βHarrington residence,β he said on cue.
βHey, Stevie,β said a girlβs voice over the phone.
Steve furrowed his brow, trying to place the familiar voice, thinking that it must be someone heβd gone out with. βHi, who is this?β he asked lightly.
βYour sister,β she said with a chuckle.
Steve brightened with recognition. βAmy! Hi!β
βHi, how are things?β
βGood, theyβre good.β He leaned against the hall table casually. βHow are you?β
βOh, you knowβ¦β she trailed off. βHey, are Mom andβ¦ Jeff there?β she asked, changing the subject abruptly.
Steve frowned. Even after more than 20 years, Amy refused to call her step-father βDad,β not that Steve could blame her. He barely felt like calling him that either at this point. βNo, theyβre out of town, I can give you their hotel numberββ
βNo, no, thatβs okay,β she cut off. βI wanted to talk to you.β
His frown deepened. βIs everything okay?β
There was a soft shuffling noise on the other end. βYeah, yeah, itβs justβ¦β
She sounded uncertain and nervous. It made Steve nervous. βAmy? Whatβs wrong?β
βUmβ¦β She laughed awkwardly. βIβm pregnant.β
Steveβs eyebrows shot up and he fell silent.
After nearly a minute, Amy spoke again. βSteve?β
βYeah, Iβm still here, I justβ¦ Wow,β he breathed.
Amy hummed nervously. βYeah. I know.β
βDoesβ¦β Steve shifted the phone in his hand. βDoes Mom know?β
βGod no,β Amy said, βI donβt even know how I would tell her.β
βWow, okay. Umβ¦β Steve didnβt know how to respond. Part of him jumped for joy. Pregnant. His sister was pregnant. He was going to have a niece or nephew. A baby. But Amy didnβt exactly sound excited. βIs this, I meanβ are you, um.β
When he failed to continue his thought, Amy responded as best as she could. βI canβt keep it.β
Steveβs stomach fell a little. βOh. Are you going to, uh, get rid of it?β he asked slowly.
βNo,β she laughed, slightly hysterically. βI couldnβt. I mean I could, but I donβt want to.β
Steve was confused then. βWhat?β
βI just,β she sighed, βI canβt afford it, and Iβm nervous about the safety and the legality, andββ she stopped abruptly. βI donβt want to.β
βBut you canβt keep it?β
βNo.β
Steve blinked. βSo what, youβre going to give it up for adoption?β he asked.
βI mean, if I have to.β Steve was more confused. βThe thing is, I canβt afford to keep a baby. I mean, Iβm single, working for minimum wage, and I am so not ready to be a mother. And the father has made it clear that he wants nothing to do with it, so much so that I canβt even reach him.β
That made Steve angry. βAsshole.β
She gave a breathy laugh. βYeah. He is. And you and I both know that Mom and Jeff would never be okay with this.β Steve nodded sadly. βBut I still feel like I have a responsibility to give this baby a good life. So thatβs why I called you.β
Steve frowned again. βMe? Why?β
βI, um. I want you to think about this, I donβt need you to answer right away, itβs totally up to you.β
βYouβre making me nervous,β he laughed awkwardly.
She chuckled back. βYeah. So. I want you to adopt the baby.β
Steve froze up. βMe?β
βYeah.β After a long stretch of silence, Amy went on. βI know that itβs a huge ask, but I know that youβve always wanted kids. You would make a great dad. Youβre so great with kids. And this way, the baby would still be in my life.β There was more silence. Amy piped up again. βSoβ¦ What do you think?β
βI,β Steve stuttered. βYou want me to take it?β he repeated.
βYes.β The gears were turning. βLook, I know itβs a lot. I still have like eight months before the baby is supposed to be born. Thatβs plenty of time to think.β
βYeah. Okay.β Steve stopped again. βIβll think about it.β
βThank you,β Amy said earnestly. βTake your time, think about it. Iβll call you again soon.β Steve nodded distantly. βOh, and, Steve?β she added quickly, βdonβt tell your parents yet please.β
Steve blinked. βRight. I wonβt.β
βThanks. Iβll talk to you soon.β
βYeah. Soon.β
βBye, Steve.β
Amy hung up and Steve simply stood there. The dial tone rang out in his ear as he tried to process everything sheβd said.
With his good ear being filled with the droning beep of the phone, he didnβt notice Robin trying to get his attention until she passed a hand in front of his face, startling him out of his thoughts.
He looked at her and put the phone back on the hook. βWhat happened?β she asked, presumably for the second time.
βIβ¦β Steve blinked and thought about it. βMy sister is pregnant.β
Robinβs eyebrows lifted. βOh wow,β she said, βis that a good thing, orβ¦?β
βI meanβ¦ She doesnβt want to raise it.β
βAh,β Robin hummed, βso sheβs going toββ she stopped and gestured vaguely.
Shaking his head, Steve said, βNo, no, sheβs going to have the baby, but she wantsβ¦ she wants me to adopt it?β He was still trying to fully process it.
Robin blinked in surprise. βOh. Okay. Are you going to?β
βI donβt know,β he groaned, βshe told me to think about it.β
βOkay, well what are you thinking?β
βI donβt know!β he exclaimed, βI just started thinking about it!β
βOkay, okay! Calm down.β She grabbed his wrist and gently led him to the couch. βSit down and take a minute.β
Steve sat, his leg immediately began to bounce and he chewed on his lip anxiously. He stared at the coffee table intensely. Robin sat next to him and watched him silently. After a few minutes of watching his mind race, she quietly asked, βDo youβ¦ want some help thinking about it?β
Steve looked up at her and considered for a second. Finally, he nodded quickly and said βYeah. Yes, help me think about it.β
They both shifted on the couch, facing each other. Robin stared at him. He stared back. Suddenly, she said, βLetβs do pros and cons.β She got up and jogged over to where her bag was sitting on the floor. She pulled out a notepad and a pen and hurried over to sit next to Steve again. She clicked the pen and wrote across the top of the page βHaving a baby.β She drew a line down the middle and wrote βProsβ and βConsβ at the top of the respective columns.
When the page was ready, she looked up at Steve. βOkay,β she said, βgive me a pro.β
Steve stared down at the paper, brow furrowed in concentration. βA pro. Um. I love children,β he said. Robin scribbled down βI love childrenβ under Pros. βAnd Amy was right, I have always wanted to be a dad,β Steve added. Robin copied down his words again.
βOkay, and what about a con?β she prompted.
Steve groaned nervously. βIβm too young to be a father,β he said.
Robin wrote it down. βPeople have had children at your age and even younger,β she pointed out.
Steve thought about it. βIβm not ready to be a father.β
βYou have until the baby is born, right?β Robin said as she wrote, βSo that one could change.β
βWhat are you doing?β Steve asked her, frustrated. βThis is pros and cons.β
βSo far,β she pointed at the page, βyour cons are fears, not facts.β
Steve glared at her incredulously. βIβm single.β
Robin wrote it down, but commented, βThat can change, too.β
βOh yeah,β he grumbled, βIβm totally going to find a girlfriend in the next eight months who will be willing to raise my sisterβs illegitimate child with me.β
Robin shrugged. βYou might.β Steve rolled his eyes. βAnother pro,β she said.
Steve thought for a moment. He played back what his sister had told him. βThe baby would still be with its family.β Robin scribbled it down. βAnd Amy would be able to be in her babyβs life.β
βGood point,β Robin said as she wrote it down.
βShe also asked me to do it, so I feel like I should.β
Robin stopped. βShe gave you the choice, right?β Steve nodded. βDonβt should on yourself.β
He blinked at her. βWhat?β
She shook her head, short brown hair swishing with the movement. βNevermind. If you did adopt the baby, though, it would make Amy happy. Would that be a pro?β
Steve scratched at his chin. βYeah, I guess so.β Robin wrote it down. βMy parents wouldnβt like it, though.β
Robin added that under the βConsβ column. βYeah, no shit,β she muttered.
βAnd I canβt raise a baby by myself,β he said.
βYou wonβt have to,β she assured him, even as she added the thought to the list.
Steve scoffed. βHow do you know?β
Robin looked up at him and stared at him earnestly. βYou arenβt alone. There are plenty of people who would be happy to give you support.β
βLike who?β he said in disbelief.
Robin quirked an eyebrow. βMe, for one,β she said, jabbing the pen against her nose. βYouβre stuck with me, Dingus. I could help you cook, watch the kid if youβre busy, and I can teach them how to be awesome,β she said, βI could be like the cool gay aunt.β
Steve laughed, feeling some of the tension release. βYeah, right. βCool.β If you say so.β
Robin grinned, satisfied with cheering him up. βAnd there are the others,β she went on, βMrs. Byers would be willing to give some advice I bet. And you could get babysitting help from the kids, Dustin would definitely be up to it.β
Steve sat silently. βHuh. Yeah, I guess so.β
Robin wrote down βI would have supportβ under Pros.
βIβm just not sure,β he added after another minute.
Robin pursed her lips thoughtfully. βWhen Amy told you she was pregnant, how did you feel? Like your immediate gut reaction?β
Steve leaned his chin on his hand. βI was excited about the idea of her having a baby,β he replied eventually.
βOkay,β she said, writing on the page again. βAnd how did you feel when she asked you to adopt it?β
Steve frowned. βI was shocked. I couldnβt really process it.β
βSure, but once you processed it, how did you feel?β she pressed.
Steve studied her. βIβ¦ I felt likeβ¦ I wanted to do it.β
Robin raised an eyebrow. βYou wanted to say yes?β
Steve hesitated. βYes. And then I started thinking about how it would work, how I would afford it, if I would be any good at it, orββ
βBut you want to adopt the baby?β she interrupted.
βYes, but itβs not that simple, Robin!β
βI know, obviously I get that.β She wrote down βI want to keep the babyβ and underlined it. βYou have eight months to figure out the logistics, to think about how it would work,β she told him, βbut it sounds like you want to do it.β
Steve frowned in concentration. He reached over and took the list from Robin and studied it silently.
I love children.
Iβve always wanted to be a dad.
Iβm too young.
Iβm not ready.
I canβt do it alone.
I would have support.
Iβm excited about the baby.
I want to keep the baby.
βIβm scared,β he told her.
βThatβs okay,β she replied.
Steve had spent a few more days thinking about the decision. This mostly entailed him turning to Robin with another fear about how things could go wrong. She made a point to reassure him that he was going to do great. βYou are caring and selfless and responsible,β she would tell him, βyou can do this.β How she became his personal life coach, she had no clue. They added a few points to the Pros and Cons list, but the decision was basically made.
They were sitting on the couch once again as Steve held the notepad and studied the list again.
βWhy do you still need the list?β Robin asked with an exasperated sigh.
βIβm just trying to weigh them out,β he replied.
βWeβve been over this, Dingus,β she said as she took the list out of his hands. She dropped the notepad onto the coffee table and turned to look at him. βYou want to adopt the baby. You have time to prepare. There is no real reason why you canβt or shouldnβt adopt the baby.β
βI know, I know, but what if something goes wrong?β
βThings go wrong all the time,β Robin retorted, βthis is Hawkins. But we can handle it, thatβs what we do.β
Steveβs leg bounced furiously. βWe can handle it,β he echoed softly.
He jumped when the phone began to ring. He looked at Robin who simply gave him an expectant glance. Taking a shaky breath, Steve got up and walked over to the phone. He picked up the handset and held it to his ear. βHarrington residence.β
βHi Steve,β said the voice on the other end.
βHey, Amy.β
βSoβ¦ Have you thought about what I said?β she asked with no further preamble.
Steve gave a breathy laugh in response. βOh yeah, Iβve thought about it. Iβve basically done nothing but.β
Amy chuckled warmly. βYeah, I figured. And what do you think?β
His eyes darted over to where Robin was lounging on the couch, watching him eagerly. She gave him an encouraging nod. βIβ¦β he hesitated as he weighed his next words, βI think that I do want to adopt your baby,β he said.
What sounded like a relieved sigh hissed through the speaker on the phone. βOkay, good. Great. Are you sure?β
βNo,β he said with a slightly hysterical nervous laugh, βbut weβve talked it through a ton, and,β he paused to look at Robin, βwe can handle it.β
Amy hummed softly. βWe?β
It took a moment for Steve to understand what she meant. βOh yeah, um, Robin, sheβs been helping me think through the decision,β he explained.
βOh, right. Robinβs yourβ¦?β she trailed off, waiting for an answer.
βSheβs my friend,β he answered. That was an oversimplification, but he didnβt feel like going into that.
βOkay, so your βfriendβ is going to help you raise my kid?β Amy asked, sounding unconvinced.
βWhat?β He glanced over at Robin again. She tilted her head in confusion. βI mean, she might, butβ¦β he stopped uncertainly.
βI doubt Mom and Jeff would like that youβre βliving in sinβ with a βfriend,ββ she said sarcastically.
βOh, no, seriously,β Steve cut in, βRobinβs my friend, but weβre not together.β
βSheβs just a friend? Really?β She still didnβt sound like she believed him.
There was nothing βjustβ about his relationship with Robin at this point, but that was too hard to try to explain. βYes, really.β
βSo why are you planning to co-parent with a friend?β
βIβm not?β he said, even more confused, βwhy would you assume that?β
βYou said βwe.ββ
Silence fell as Steve puzzled over her words. βWhat?β
βYou said βwe can handle it,ββ she elaborated, βin that you and your βfriendβ can handle it, right?β
Robin was standing beside him then, trying to hear the conversation on the other end. β Oh, yeah,β Steve muttered, realizing what she was referencing. βI just meant that, like, I know that I can handle it because I have support,β he said, echoing his list.
βAha,β Amy responded. βThatβs good, then. Um hey listen, I have to run, but I will talk to you soon, okay?β she said in a sudden rush.
Nodding, Steve said, βOkay, sure.β
They said their goodbyes and Steve hung up the phone. βWhat was all of that?β Robin asked when he had set it down.
βShe assumed that you were going to co-parent with me,β he summarized.
Robin blinked at him and considered this. βI mean, Iβm going to be over all of the time to help, but not exactly.β
βThatβs what I said,β he replied. He scratched at his chin thoughtfully before adding βBut how is that going to work?β
Robin tilted her head. βWhat?β
βBy the time the baby is born, youβll be starting college, right?β
Robin froze. βOh yeahβ¦β She stood there, staring blankly into space which resulted in her eyes boring a hole into Steveβs shirt. βWell. I could defer.β
Steveβs brow furrowed. βNo way, Robs, this isnβt your responsibility, itβs mine.β
She frowned back at him. βSteve, if youβre having a kid, Iβm going to be there to help you.β Robin had a look in her eyes that said she was working through something in her head. βIt would be easier for there to be two of us. And I think that it would be better for the kid to have two parents. We could work together to look after the kid, work to provide for them, and if we did it togetherβ¦β she looked directly into Steveβs eyes then, βPlenty of guys start families while theyβre in college, so why canβt I?β
Steve blinked. βYouβre serious?β
βDeadly,β she said, βweβve been discussing this running on the assumption that Iβd be helping anyway, right?β She gestured excitedly with her hands as she spoke. βItβs not so crazy. I think we can do it.β
Steve gaped at her. βYou really want to adopt a kid with me?β
She shrugged, giving him a crooked smile. βIβve been helping you herd a group of rowdy fourteen-year-olds for over a year, I donβt see the difference,β she joked.
Dustin was waiting on the couch for Steve to finish getting ready. They were already running late for the fair, but Steve insisted that he fix his hair before they left even though Dustin insisted it looked the same as always. Eddie was wandering around the living room, looking at all of Steveβs stuff. He would occasionally pick something up and study it, apparently incapable of sitting still.
He picked up some brochure from the mantle and skimmed over it. βIs Steve planning on moving or something?β he asked.
Dustinβs forehead scrunched up. βNo, why?β
Eddie showed him the paper, βit looks like heβs going through the classified for houses and apartments,β he responded.
He glanced at the paper again before something else caught his eye. Eddie made a beeline for the coffee table and dropped the paper amid the clutter, scooping up a notepad that sat in the middle. He turned it around and read over the page. As he did so, his eyebrows lifted in surprise.
βWhat is that?β Dustin asked, curiosity getting the better of him.
βDude,β Eddie breathed, βI think Steve knocked up some girl.β
βWhat?β Dustin jumped up and stumbled around the coffee table to join Eddie. Eddie turned the notepad to let him see.
βItβs a Pros and Cons list to decide whether or not he wants to keep a baby,β he said. βWhoβs Amy?β
Dustin studied the list. The name was familiar, but he was struggling to place it.
βWhat are you guys doing?β Steve said, unimpressed when he came into the room. Both boysβ heads snapped up to look at him.
Eddie straightened up and smirked at Steve. βI didnβt know you had a girlfriend right now, let alone a pregnant one,β he said.
Steve gave him a confused stare. βWhat? I donβt have a girlfriend.β
Dustin snatched the list from Eddie and waved it at Steve. βSo who did you knock up?β
Following the movement on the notepad with his eyes, Steve opened his mouth to speak. Then a look of realization crossed his face and he burst into laughter.
Dustin and Eddie exchanged confused glances.
βI didnβt get anyone pregnant,β he explained, βitβs my sister. Sheβs pregnant.β
βYou have a sister?β muttered Eddie.
βWait, then why are you making a list about whether or not you want to have a baby?β Dustin demanded.
βMe and Robin are going to adopt the baby,β Steve said as if it were the most normal thing in the world, βI would have told you guys soon enough, but weβre still working on finding a place and figuring out how weβre going to do it all.β
βAh, you see? He is moving,β Eddie added triumphantly.
Dustin waved him off, βYou and Robin are adopting a baby? Together?β Dustin asked incredulously.
Steve squinted at him. βYes. And before you say anything else, no, this does not mean that we are together.β
Dustin rolled his eyes. βI do not understand you at all.β
βYou and me both, Henderson. Now, are we going or what?β he called, jingling the keys in his hand.
