Summary: What makes a monster and what makes a hero? The question seems so simple, Link has never had any reason to think about it. But as he chases an enemy with mysterious intentions across Hyrule, he finds the question concerns him more and more.

Gloom oozed up around the demon sword, eroding whatever magic the fusion used. The sword clattered to the ground and then was engulfed. Link held steady. The gloom bubbled and began to take the shape of a person, features slowly refining. Pointed ears, champion's leathers, all the details down to the eyelashes and fingernails etched in glutinous black and red. And then the gloom began to drain away and the puppet emerged, eyes closed, on its back with the sword in its scabbard beneath it.
Link rested the point of the Master Sword at the hollow of its throat and the puppet's eyes flew open.

About:
The aim of this challenge is to motivate through community (and with low stakes in our busy lives) to actually finish that fucking WIP. The Tailgating session will be for whoever can show up a week before the main event. The Finish For Real session is the challenge deadline.
I plan on utilizing writing sprints! Let me know if you're interested in joining and I'll send off a ping on tumblr and discord.
This is a very strike-while-the-iron's-hot type of event with no formal planning and hardly any rules. Bring your WIPs and positive attitude and if we have no challenge winners then I guess we'll have to schedule another event. Oh well.

[[snippet time! i'm super late for wip wednesday but it is what it is]]
He and Mona have been mapping out the outer ring for multiple days in a row now, with little to no progress or clues uncovered. It was demoralizing, to say the least. There was just far too much land to cover with their pitiful two man team--even with a nine man team if Joker were to humble himself.
The only upside are the items, plentiful in their rant of usefulness, as though they’d been discarded at random. Some feel like something Joker should’ve gotten as a prize for robbing a boss enemy, while others are as mundane as an herb, hardly effective enough to heal a medium-sized cut.
The hours are beginning to stack, however, and the looming palace center in the distance isn’t getting any closer, much to Joker’s mounting frustration. He ruffles up his damp hair with a grunt, Morgana hops between the wrecked and water damaged buildings and picks clean what is usable and what can be sold.
When they’re shifting through the mists, Joker sometimes swears he sees a shadow passing underfoot of their gliding gondola. For his own sanity, he chooses to chalk the hallucination up to the whistling silence and his overactive imagination. It’s more for false comfort than anything, so far his instincts have never been wrong.
Nothing’s attacked them yet, at least.
“I think the part of the ring we’re in is probably the commercial district—which explains all the shops and supplies here!”
Joker hums in agreement: “It’s massive, but if we really put boots to ground, I think we can cover more…” He trails off, something pings in the back of his brain. His head snaps up as he furrows his brow, something shimmers to his left making his breath catch.
“Whoa! A safe room!”
Something in him unwinds—he’s half disappointed, but this still feels like progress after two weeks of rotted buildings and endless rowing.
Just in time it seems, like a mourning shroud, a sheet of rain blankets the winding canals. The effect is immediate, dots dance in the thief's vision, cotton pillowing his habitually sharp senses.
Joker hastens the boat's glide to the lone pier before it gets bad enough for his grip on the oar to weaken. His boots land, heavy, against the waterlogged wood of the half-submerged pier, Mona keeps up with him despite needing to all but scamper to keep up with his longer stride.
Before them is a marble rotunda, almost aggressively Roman in its presentation. The rain is sheeting now, a picturesque waterfall rolling down the ornate ledges and pillars holding the structure upright, further obscuring what may lie on the other side.
It’s almost pristine, compared to the rot weaved in everywhere else.
After a short pause, Joker crosses the threshold, muscles heavy, soaked through and chilled to the bone. Yet, to his surprise… the first thing he registers is the music.
The smooth tenor saxophone is nostalgic enough to suffocate him, he brushes his hair back away from his forehead, slicking his messy unkempt curls away from his mask.
His pupils may as well be pinpricks, with how hard he focuses in on the deceptively innocent record, spinning away on an antique gramophone that’s at least a hundred years out of date. He takes off his gloves and wrings them of excess moisture to hide how badly his hands are shaking.
Joker hadn’t realize the depths of the palace’s deafening silence until he is abruptly devoid of it.
Water streams down the opening he and Mona entered from, creating the illusion of a doorway. Then, for a moment reality wavers. Joker blinks, seeing what looks to be a records room for a split second, with wall to wall shelves, endless manila folders, hundreds of color coded labels.
When he blinks again, between the skip of a needle on a record and Mona hopping on one of the benches the space settles—remembering what shape it ought to be. Curious. A part of Joker ponders if his rival’s unredacted court records exist somewhere in that place—he’ll have to probe Sae about it when he gets the chance.
(Granted, Futaba could probably snag them in a heartbeat, but the inherent selfishness of that impulse, makes Akira want to crawl himself into a hole.)
Beside him, Mona happily bobs his head to the tune, the rhythmic notes of blues a welcome way to break up the palace's eerie, whistling winds. Joker only sighs and leans his back against a pillar, complicated gaze focused on the blurred shapes of the ruins just obscured through the cascading water. A bit of his vitality comes back.
“So, what’s the plan?”
Joker’s mouth twists to the side, “Well, I think we can probably rule out that flood gate as being a block in the real world…”
“Huh? What makes you say that, Joker?”
He lifts a shoulder, “Lavenza said Akechi’s physical body is in here somewhere. So, there’s no avenue to change his cognition further; that means most of the puzzles here are meant to be solved.”
“Oh, I see now! Come to think of it… Doesn’t this place kind of give off the vibe that it wants to waste our time?”
Blink.
“‘Waste our time?’”
“Yeah, two weeks and we’ve only found a safe room, a less experienced thief would’ve probably given up by now. Not us, though, obviously,” Mona glances up at him, practically shining, “we’re professionals!”
Joker’s lips twitch with affection, “That thing you’re getting at… so, you think this district we’re stuck in probably a defense mechanism. A time sink to deter thieves.”
“Exactly! Akechi’s a prickly guy, so it makes sense his palace would craft a buffer, kinda like a moat around a castle.”
“I think this is beyond prickly, and we haven’t even run into any enemies yet.”
Joker trails off grimly, this palace represents a worst case scenario. It is his rival at the end of the world, corned like an injured tiger, covered in wounds, bearing blood-stained fangs to all unfortunate enough to wander in too close.
You put him here. He did all this for you instead of running like he should have from the start.
“... I hope the rain stops soon,” Mona admits after a short silence, ears drooping as the saxophone reaches its bridge, there’s a distinct hint of blues in the quartet, a morose nostalgia that Joker can’t seem to shake. The bass. The saxophone. The piano. Even the rumbling of the drums.
Akira remembers how important music was to Akechi, it’s only fitting it would color his psyche in a place that’s 'safe', a space meant to bring the relief and comfort he never received in life, even to the visitors his psyche so loathed.
Contradictory in every way, just like Akechi himself.
(Stop that—he's still alive, you can still salvage this, you can fix this.)
unrealistic to me that at no point during Jason's time in the League of Assassins was there a period of Ra's desperately trying to figure out what the fuck brought Jason back to life inside that coffin and that at no point was there a conversation that was like,
Jason, on a medical table for the twelfth experiment that day: how do we even know it was me, though?
Ra's: what do you mean?
Jason, shrugging: like- maybe i was just in a magic coffin. maybe it had nothing to do with me, maybe it was my environment. have you ever read the book 'pet cemetery'?
Ra's:
Ra's: *squints deeply*
Ra's: no. if it was the graveyard then you wouldn't be the only person that came back to life. you're being ridiculous.
Jason: i dunno. maybe it was just that one specific patch of grass.
Ra's:
Ra's: hm.
Bruce finds out Jason came back to life way earlier than planned because halfway through patrol he gets an alert of a disturbance at Gotham Cemetery and when he and Tim get there it's to see Jason and Ra's in the dark with headlamps on next to Jason's now dug-up grave, dirt everywhere as Jason holds a shovel and Ra's holds the corpse of a dead chicken over the hole, ready to lower it, surrounded by league assassins either standing guard or holding notebooks and pens for if something actually happens and Ra's wants to take notes.
Damian is in the car with the window cracked wrapped in Jason's jacket and tiredly playing temple run on Jason's phone while he waits for them to be done so they can go home. when he sees Bruce arrive he sighs loudly and does up the window. Batman and Robin land in the graveyard and everybody freezes like the scene in ratatouille when the humans catch the rats in the kitchen, and it takes Jason two solid weeks to convince Bruce that no, they were not trying to replace his corpse with a chicken, they were doing science-

The puppet fought with a silent, vicious implacability. If Purah's trap really had almost killed it, there was no sign of that now. It was faster than it had been, stronger.
So was Link. They clashed, over and over, the fight growing more brutal as it became clear how evenly matched they were and each sought some small advantage. The puppet kicked Link through a pile of lumber, readied by the construction crews. Link peppered it with arrows of all kinds. The puppet nicked Link with its unholy sword and Link nicked it with his holy one and both wounds steamed and hissed.
