the magnus archives and its running theme of antagonistic forces being polite,,,
-"It Is Polite To Knock", first and foremost. and there's a running theme of antagonistic forces knocking. eg, Jane Prentiss never attempting to force her way in to Martin's house, but standing outside and knocking for days on end, Natalie knocking politely on Kathy's door when she tries to recruit her to the Dark cult and never barging in, etc etc
-the Distortion doesn't tend to force people to enter, it waits for people to come in on their own
-Mike Crew's "I was trying so hard to be polite"-- and his attempt was pretty solid! he was legitimately polite up until then, and would have probably continued being polite if Jon didn't keep doubling down
-Peter Lukas cares about proper workplace management and takes actual workplace suggestions from his employees. And agrees to do fewer murders.
-the ONE thing Jonah-Elias is famous for is apologizing. Imagine the most evil thing you do in your life is apologizing for the deception
meanwhile the archival staff are beating each other to death while calling each other 12 slurs per day. they've never tried to be polite for a single second of their lives.
#Interestingly. martin is the major exception in the archives of trying to be notably polite in the early seasons#and jon gets suspicious of him for it!!! @horizon-penblade
THIS!! the association between politeness and danger!! the way that friendliness is a warning sign for intended harm!!
martin comes in to the archives and immediately starts smiling at everyone and making tea,,, of COURSE jon thinks he's got some nefarious ulterior motive
This is all extremely fascinating and the amount of βcareβ some villains have in TMA (especially Elias and Peter) remind me a lot of how abusive relationships workβoffering just enough kindness to make you question whether or not theyβre really all that bad (or to placate you after youβve tried to call them outβ¦) and maybe they might have your interests at heart after all.
This is particularly relevant since both Elias and Peter were actively grooming Jon and Martin and deceiving them.
I just want to add a note about doorways and knocking too: in a lot of traditional folklore, Fae or vampires or demons or other spirit creatures cannot cross a threshold without an invitationβthey cannot break the barrier of a homeβs sanctity or harm the humans within without the (perhaps unknowing or unwilling) consent of the human.
This folkloric idea of permission goes both ways too, with humans needing to acquire it before crossing the thresholds of things like faerie rings, or else inviting harm on themselves.
It definitely feeds into TMAβs folkloric horror feel that this concept is prevalent with a lot of avatars (especially trickster types like the Distortion).
wish I had something smart and clever to say about all this but I don't, so I'm just gesturing wildly at your whole commentary and forcing everyone to look at it. Yes to all of that. they. yeah. it's about how they have deniability. it's about how they make it hard for people to judge if they're overreacting to what's going on around them, because the people in positions of power are so calm and level headed and put together.
it's "don't be so dramatic jon". it's how when sasha came to elias about the worms, he was like 'oh? apologies, I thought jon was overreacting.'
it's about the antagonists being in a position where they can follow social protocols and present themselves as dignified, while everyone else is scrambling to survive and coming off as rude and irrational in the process.
it's. Ouuhhhh,. I mean. that's just how life goes. this isn't anything revolutionary. that's just how life is. but it's not very common to find antagonists who 1) don't get angry, 2) maintain politeness, and 3) aren't personally tormenting anyone (as in, it's not like they're maintaining politeness while torturing people. the antagonists in tma are maintaining politeness while taking a step back and letting people torment themselves. melanie stabs jon. daisy stabs jon. elias sits in his office and watches it all go down)
it's the class divide. Im absolutely losing it over the class divide. of course the lower class is turned against itself whilst the upper class doesn't have to lift a finger to keep the power imbalance the way it is. idk what I'm saying at this point.
and yeah about the folklore stuff. that's cool too. that's good commentary too. interesting.
saying you have nothing smart to say and then bringing up some banger points about power structures and the class divide πππ
honestly I'm so often caught up in my trauma-adjacent read of tma I miss out on the scathing political metaphors like this. but it makes SO much sense!! that the ones in power actively take advantage of the ones without power to doom themselves into destroying each other.
elias's entire understanding of jon's traumas and his cunning capability to weaponize them (jon's suicidality, for example) for elias's own ends is particularly brutal in this social metaphor context. because that's exactly how the rich take advantage of the poorββby literally comprehending their needs but instead of caring for them, they weaponize their insecurities (money, food, safety, etc) to further oppress and exploit them.
π Congratulations Jonathan Sims, Head Archivist of the Magnus Institute, London.
You're the most iconic asexual character on Tumblr dot com!!
We've done it!! We've given Jon a crown that isn't the Watcher's. π Thanks to @drax-the-vampire-king for the poll and to the entire TMA fandom for supporting our ace king!
Guys I did NOT mean to take a 5 month hiatus I am so sorry but I'm very glad to be back have a longer update as an apology
Business was slow in the winter, the bustle of everyday life in Pelican Town seeming to quiet to a muffled hum as the valley found itself put to bed under a thick blanket of snow. Now that the harvest season was over, Martin had very little to do on the farm other than maintenance, caring for the chickens, and preparing for the next growing seasonβ which was why he was braving the cold to make the trip into town to visit the general store. He hadnβt gotten the barn finished as fast as he had hoped when heβd told Jon about his plans for the farm, but he could still plant a cherry tree in time for spring.Β
Martin paused at the top of the hill on the way into town, a frown crossing his face as he blew on his hands to warm them up a bit. It probably wasnβt any of his business, but he hadnβt caught even a glimpse of Jon since heβd left the farm yesterday morning. Could they really have been missing one another so thoroughly? Or maybe Jon had simply decided to take a short trip back to Zuzu City to visit some friendsβ it wasnβt like he had any obligation to notify Martin of his absence. He was probably fine.
Still, Martin couldnβt help but worry a bit. He did his best to put it out of his mind as he continued down the hill and into town. The store was pleasantly warm, in sharp contrast to outside.
Pierre glanced up from behind the counter. βWell, hello, Martin. Cold enough for you out there?β
Martin shivered slightly as he untied his scarf. βWell, Iβm not frozen just yet. Give it another five minutes.β
βYou can say that again,β Gus, the man who owned the village saloon, laughed from where he was standing near the produce sectionβ which was admittedly a bit sparse this time of year.
βYou should have been here a couple years ago when the furnace in here broke,β Jodi laughed. βPierre still insisted on standing behind the counter all day in a winter coat.β
βNever mind that,β Pierre scolded. βWhat can I do you for?β
Martin stepped closer to the front counter. βI was hoping toββ
He was interrupted by the chime of the door opening again, a rush of frigid air sweeping across the store as he glanced over his shoulder to see who was coming in.
The man in the doorway had dark, silver-streaked hair combed severely back from his brow and absolutely reeked of bureaucracy.Β
Unfortunately, Martin knew him.
βMr. Bouchard?β he asked. βWhat are you doing here?β
βOh, hello... Martin, wasnβt it? You really should just call me Elias, you know. We did work together, after all.β Elias adjusted the sleeve of his suit jacket.
β...right.β Martin couldnβt help but deflate a bit, fading into the background the way he so often had during his stint at Joja. He hadnβt exactly been expecting an encounter with his old supervisor todayβ honestly, never would have been too soon, as far as Martin was concerned.
βShouldnβt you be at JojaMart?β Pierre didnβt try nearly as hard as Martin had to hide his hostility. Apparently, heβd been well aware of Eliasβs presence in the valley already. βItβs the middle of business hours.β
βRight you are, Pierre.β Elias reached into his pocket, as if heβd only just remembered what heβd come for, and produced a handful of blue flyers. He raised his voice slightly, clearly well aware that everyone in the store was watching the exchange and wanting to make sure they caught every word. βIβd just come to offer some of the good people of Pelican town a coupon for 50% off their purchase at JojaMart. Just in time for holiday shopping.β
Pierre went pale. βFiftyβ¦β
Elias waved the coupons in the air over his head. βWell? Any takers?β
βJoja does have a better produce selection this time of year,β Gus said thoughtfully. βIβll take one.β
It didnβt take long at all for the little shop to nearly empty itself of everyone except for Martin, Pierre, and of course, Elias.
βI canβt match those prices,β Pierre finally protested weakly. βIβd be selling at a loss.β
Elias approached the counter, passing uncomfortably close to Martin to do so. βWhat a shame. It must be so difficult, losing your loyal customers like that. But thatβs just business, isnβt it?β He fixed Martin with a piercing stare. βDonβt suppose youβd be interested in a voucher, Martin?β
Martin shook his head quickly. βIβ¦ n-no. Thank you.β
βShame.β Elias pocketed the last of the flyers. βWell, I should go. Iβve got a feeling things are about to pick up back at JojaMart. Good day, Pierre. Martin.β

Jon wrapped his coat more tightly around himself, trying to sink deeper into the thin thread of warmth it provided and only succeeding in accidentally shifting to a patch of stone untouched by his body heat. The movement jostled his injured wrist, drawing out an involuntary sound of pain that he immediately clamped his teeth overβ he couldnβt risk detection, not now.
His exploration of the abandoned mines had gone relatively smoothly at firstβ heβd made it more than forty levels down the shaft with breaks to catch his breath, with only marginally threatening encounters with strange cave bugs that heβd managed to either evade entirely or dispatch with no more than a couple bite marks around the ankles.
Of course, that had felt like significantly more of an issue right up until heβd broken through into this frigid section of the mines and encountered the shades. The size and shape of humans, but apparently composed entirely of shadow and speaking only in echoey whispers, they moved fast and hit with a paralyzing, agonizingly cold touch that left Jon seeing spots and reeling as if heβd taken a physical blow.Β
His measly dagger had proven itself woefully inadequate against the threatβ in fact, in one of his first encounters with one of the things, it had locked his wrist in a death grip, forcing him to drop the weapon and leaving his hand nearly useless. It was a bit of a blur after thatβ left with no other option than to run, Jon had been driven several levels deeper into the mines until he found the alcove he was currently hiding in, hardly pausing for breath until heβd used his good hand and whatever else he could brace with to barricade the opening with old crates and barrels.
It wasnβt until that point that heβd turned and nearly screamed when his torchlight fell upon the frozen corpse of Gertrude Robinson.Β
But⦠the mines were quiet. Other than the occasional drip of water, there was no sound at all. Against all odds, Jon was actually⦠safe.
Except, of course, that he was trapped.

Pierre had warned Martin that his newly planted cherry sapling would need plenty of clear space around it to grow. That didnβt justify the amount of time Martin spent checking it. He shivered and forced himself to straighten.
Jon hadnβt even shown up to open the library that morningβ Penny had been forced to resort to holding class in a spare room in the saloon. Sheβd done it outdoors on occasion in the past, but this time of year, the weather simply wouldn't allow for it. Martin had been trying not to worry, but to be absent from work like that, especially unannounced, was so unlike Jon that it felt like evidence of foul play in itself.
Add that to the circumstances of the other librarianβs recent disappearanceβ¦
Please come back, Jon. I need you to be okay.
***
Jon had left for the mines expecting to be back late that same night and had packed accordingly. He had no idea how long it had been, but certainly long enough that his food and water supplies had dwindled and run out, even with Jon trying his best to ration. Function had slowly returned to his hand, but there was still an angry red welt encircling his wrist and the limb wouldnβt support any weight. Heβd considered trying to venture out of his hiding spot, but every time heβd nearly gotten up the courage to make a run for it, one noise or another would have him turning off his light and holding his breath until the mines were quiet again. He spent most of his time in darkness, trying to conserve body heat and torch batteries alike, but there occasionally came moments when the monotony became too much for him to stand. This was one of those times.Β
If there had been any doubt as to the identity of the corpse he was currently sharing a space with, it was dispelled by the notebook Jon had found tucked next to her. Heβd used a stray piece of wood from one of the crates to gingerly extract it, hands shaking with nerves and exhaustion. The inside of the cover had been signed in the same strong handwriting Jon had seen on a few of the older documents in the libraryβ Gertrude Robinson. Most of her notes were too aged and water-damaged to read, but an entry near the beginning was mostly legible:
Today marks the third consecutive day of my expedition attempting to ascertain the fate of Adelard Dekker.
Adelard is dead. I am nearly certain of this. I hope, rather, to understand the means and cause, and to prevent anyone else from meeting the same fate. The mines are eerily quietβ even more so than before the ritual attemptβ but even this deep I have been finding evidence of the fallout, almost as though it was tracked down here by somethingβ or someone.Β
I expect the signatures will eventually resolve and concentrate themselves somewhere in the mines, but I have a feeling that it would be best to learn what I can and clear out before that happens. Ifβ
Jon was startled from his reading by the muffled sound of stone on stone from outside the barrier, like someone had dislodged a pebble.Β
He turned out his light, holding perfectly still.Β
Trying to breathe as silently as possible.Β
Sure that whatever was on the other side of the poorly-constructed barrier could hear his traitorous heart hammering in his throat.
βJon?β The voice was familiar, if echoey and distant.Β
Jon froze. It wasnβt Guntherβ it couldnβt be Gunther. With everything that had happened, heβd nearly forgotten why heβd come here in the first place.
βHang on.β There was an awful scraping sound as some of the crates Jon had haphazardly piled were dragged away from the barricade.Β
Jon scrambled back, pathetically wielding his piece of wood in his good hand. βStay back,β he snarled, his voice hoarse from dehydration and disuse.
There was a pause. βTurn on your light.β
Without taking his eyes or his makeshift weapon away from the patch of darkness the voice was coming from, Jon reached out and turned his torch back on.
It was Guntherβ or, at least, it looked as though it had been Gunther at some point. The shade standing just outside Jonβs alcove had the same silhouette, and even wore Guntherβs square-rimmed glassesβ although one of the lenses was cracked.
βIβm not going to hurt you,β Gunther said softly. βCan I come inside?β
Jon stared into the shadeβs hollow eyes for several moments before he finally nodded.
Gunther approached slowly, like he was trying not to spook a wild animal, and dropped to a crouch. βCan I see that wrist?β His fingers ghosted over Jonβs skin, just shy of actually touching him but frigid enough to ache nonetheless. Jon winced. βGunther, Iβ¦ what happened to you?β
He hummed distantly. βThatβs healing pretty well, considering the circumstances. Andβ¦ itβs probably best if you donβt know too many details. You might have attracted his attention already.β
βHis?β
βI see youβve found Gertrudeβs journal,β Gunther said, apparently ignoring Jonβs question.
βIβ¦ yes. Adelard Dekker, what happened to him?β
Gunther was silent for a long moment. βNothing good. There isnβt much left of him these days. Itβsβ¦ hard, keeping your wits about you when youβre like this. I donβt know how long Iβll retain this much presence of mind.β
βI see. Iβm sorry.β
βItβs alright, Jon. Not much to be done about it now.β Gunther stood. βCome on.β
Jon hesitated. βW-what?β
βYou do want to leave the mines alive, donβt you?β
***
Jon stumbled as a particularly strong gust of wind caught him off guard. He had no idea how long heβd been trapped underground, but by the time Gunther had snuck him past the other shades and Jon had surfaced, it was well after dark and it was freezing and he was just so tired. It was all he could do to hold on to one goalβ get back to the farm. He just needed to get back to the farm. One foot in front of the other.
It was all a blur until Jon found himself standing on the porch of Martinβs cabin, hand just withdrawing from knocking on the door and unsure of how exactly heβd gotten there.
Martin came to the door, dressed in a worn cardigan and looking like he hadnβt exactly been expecting guests. βOh, hi, whatβ Jon?β
Jon managed a little wave. βHello.β Then the porch was falling out from underneath him and Jon finally let his knees buckle.
***
βJon!β Martin automatically caught Jon as he fell, dropping to his knees with him to cushion the impact.
He hadnβt seen Jon in days. Heβd been trying not to worry too much, butβ¦ things hadnβt looked good. And now here he was, in Martinβs arms, snowflakes in his hair and his skin far too cold and his pulse rapid and weak against Martinβs own, but here. Safe. Alive.
After several long moments, Jon stirred slightly. βMmmβ¦. Mβtin?β
βThere you are,β Martin said, voice rising in pitch. βWhere have you been? Are you alright? I donβtββ He stopped himself. Jonβs head had wound up resting against his chest when heβd fallen and, even now that he was awake, he hadnβt really bothered moving. He just stayed slumped there, eyes half-shut. Jon was clearly in no state for this. Martin took a deep breath. He could ask questions later. βCome on, letβsβ¦ letβs just get you inside.β
***
Jon had never been much of a fan of tea. It wasnβt that he didnβt like it, it was just hard to find a brand exactly the way he preferred it. But now, wrapped in a blanket on the faded couch in Martinβs sitting room, the mug of tea that Martin had handed him might just have been the best thing heβd ever tasted.
βDoes that taste alright?β Martin asked anxiously. Heβd been practically hovering ever since heβd helped Jon inside.
βItβs perfect, Martin. Thank you.β Jon took another sip. βAre these the tea leaves youβve been growing?β
Martin nodded. βYes, butβ¦ where have you been, Jon? I know itβs really not any of my business, but you look a wreck, and itβs been three daysββ
βThree days? I didnβtβ I had no idea.β Jon pushed up his glasses to rub his temples with his good hand, carefully balancing the mug on his knee with the other. βI just ran into a bit of trouble down in the mines. Iβm sorry to worry you, Martin, Iβ¦ I wonβt be going down there again.β
Martin gave him a searching look for several moments and finally sighed. βJustβ¦ be careful, alright?β
βThe lease agreement could get complicated if I disappear again when rent is due,β Jon agreed.
Martin stared at him.
βI was joking, Martin.β
βRight.β Martin cracked a smile. βMaybe if I threaten to evict you if you do anything stupid youβll think twice next time, hm?β
Jon huffed. βCruel and unusual, but Iβll allow it.β
βGood. Stay put, Iβm going to go find you something to eat.β
***
Martin returned from the kitchen, mug of hot soup in hand, but stopped to lean in the doorway, warmth blooming behind his sternum. Jon had fallen asleep right where Martin had left him, hands curled into the faded blanket and face slightly smushed against the back of the couch.
Crossing the room, Martin gently took his glasses and set them on the coffee table.
I'm two paragraphs in and I just remembered Jon went into the freaking mines uhmigudskewnf
Ok wait WHAT.
The man in the doorway had dark, silver-streaked hair combed severely back from his brow and absolutely reeked of bureaucracy.Β
Unfortunately, Martin knew him.
βMr. Bouchard?β he asked. βWhat are you doing here?β
βMR BOUCHARDβ ??????!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
Yeah WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE????
HE WORKS AT JOJA. OF COURSE HE FREAKING DOES
the scream I just scram was not good for my cough but HELLO???
βRight you are, Pierre.β Elias reached into his pocket, as if heβd only just remembered what heβd come for, and produced a handful of blue flyers.
Ohmygod. He's the morris he's Morris did he replace Morris or was Morris never here?
(Holy shit if Elias is going to be Morris in all the cutscenes I hope SO BADLY Pierre will punch him once the community centre's done)
Dark, sliver-streaked hair? Reeks of bureaucracy?
Why, it's Elia Bouchard MORRIS.
[...] Jon had been driven several levels deeper into the mines until he found the alcove he was currently hiding in, hardly pausing for breath until heβd used his good hand and whatever else he could brace with to barricade the opening with old crates and barrels.
Ouhh yeah π. Things aren't going great for Jon.
WAIT WHAT
It wasnβt until that point that heβd turned and nearly screamed when his torchlight fell upon the frozen corpse of Gertrude Robinson.Β
HE FOUND HER??? SHE WAS HERE??? I THOUGHT WE'D HAVE MORE TIME BEFORE THIS KIND OF CONFRONTATION AARHG
Please come back, Jon. I need you to be okay.
Waoohhusuwdhuhuwhfuqfhuh π
The mines are eerily quietβ even more so than before the ritual attempt [...]
Is this referencing one of the earlier failed rituals in TMA? Hmm...
HOLD ON. WHAT?
GUNTHER IS BACK???
But he's a shade now? Are those just shadow brutes? Does this mean he's already dead?!
Andβ¦ itβs probably best if you donβt know too many details. You might have attracted his attention already.β
Right, this 'he' is probably Elias. And there "isn't much left" of Adelard. Has he also been reduced to a shade? Or some other creature??
And phew ok Jon's made his way back to the surface and it's ok now
Where's this story gonna go??

so Michael has arms now. I fear I may have made them just a little bit too longβ¦ I really like the wrist joints though so I might just have to shorten the forearms somehow? Iβll need to sculpt the legs to check the proportions
The Buried - You're a psychological study because this links back to childhood somehow. You either ate dirt or had to dig somewhere every time you went outside.
The Corruption - You're always vaguely sick (Coughing, sneezing, randomly dizzy.), yet despite this you are probably prefer The Corruption as a toxicity metaphor instead of just a blatant fear of illness.
The Dark - For claiming the dark is your favorite, you sure would love a star projector. The dark to astronomy pipeline is real.
The Desolation - This is not your favorite, Agnes Montague is your favorite.
The End - Your favorite season is winter, no I'm not elaborating.
The Extinction -Β You like making fan content after watching something more than actually watching something.
The Eye - You really resonate with Jonathan Sims.
The Flesh - π³οΈββ§οΈ.
The Hunt - All your hobbies become personality traits and you're so real for that.
The Lonely - Go straight to therapy. Do not pass go. Do not get 200 dollars. Get off AO3. You know you shouldn't be reading those fics at 2AM. Yes. Those.
The Slaughter - Okay, "knows a lot about medieval torture devices and the paranormal," I see you.
The Spiral - You think spoilers make stories better.
The Stranger - You either don't like for people to know you, or your childhood was full of the fear of Ronald McDonald. Either way, there's a nonzero chance you are/were a theater kid.
The Vast - You want to be full of whimsy, but you're full of exhaustion and burnout instead.
The Web - You probably disagree with Jon's choice at the end of TMA, you probably like the directors cut of movies, and you probably tend to make the least popular choices in choice based video games because you trust your opinions even when others see something differently.

i like that the masters canonically send each other messages in correspondence. imagine if every single day your shitty coworkers spammed you with texts and they were written in the language of god and they set fire to all of your subordinate's eyeballs whenever they made the mistake of existing in the same room while you were sorting junk mail. and like. this is your native language so you can read it just fine. but God Forbid your fuckass colleague doesn't fold the envelope all the way and consequently blasts jerry* the mailman to smithereens
*this is a made up name. you don't care to learn your mailman's actual name because you are a giant evil spacebat.

A Magnus fan can't go to London and not make a short pilgrimage to the Magnus Institute in real life at 42 Millbank. It was quite an emotional experience to walk the same roads around London as Jon would have and look out over the Thames at night, as he may have done on those many solitary nights at the Institute.
