...greetings. I also struggle with creating creatures, but I shall attempt to assist you! ^^
Writing a new creature and drawing a new creature are often entwined in the process of creation. Since I don't really know which one you're focusing on, I'll try my best to address both!
Writing a creature: To write a creature, we usually want to think about where in your fictional world they reside. Now, Pen, what on Earth do you mean by that, you may inquire? Well, what I mean is considering terrain and habitat! ^^
For example: if they are more populated in rocky, open terrain, they should be able to easily blend into the stone with shades and dull browns, yellows, reds; especially mixes of them! To move along high ledges, they should have stronger hind legs to leap up and climb the terrain they thrive in.
Aspects of these creatures will typically need to reflect on how they can survive in the biomes they are placed in. You can also always search up animals in different areas (grasslands, mountains, rainforests, deserts) to see similar physical abilities they share in order to survive in the wild.
And, of course, if you're writing something more fantasy and magical, you can give them magical abilities to make up for anything you feel won't fit into their design! These are just some tips on how to get started before exploring further and fully developing ideas you want to use. :)
Drawing a creature: As I've said at the beginning of my rant (I am...so sorry) writing and drawing are very closely connected in this creative process! To design the visual of a creature, we can quickly take features from real life and build from there! ><
Again, we can think back to where we are placing these spectacular creatures...are they in an open area? Maybe more covered? Perhaps an awkward mix of it all?
Consider an agile build to run across open spaces quickly. A colorful appearance to blend into foliage as they lie in wait for prey. We can always mix and match as we like, and over-exaggerate ANY details we want! (Always remember that YOU are the creator; there is no right or wrong in creation!) Make them obnoxiously colorful! They can be both huge and stealthy, what's stopping them?
Explore how you interpret different details of your creations. They might start out bland and looking a bit too close to real life, but when you start to develop more ideas built off of those initial designs, you'll soon end up with something majestic and magnificent, or maybe not. Maybe it's even better that way?
You can go to extremes at any time. Connect small details to such wildly different things and concepts; it's fun! That weird-looking pattern seems just a bit too much like eyes? BAM! You've just gotten an idea. Don't like it? That's okay! Turn it into something it doesn't look like at all! VENUS FLY TRAP! Or you can leave it. Who's gonna judge you for something you pass on in your creative process?
