So, Soul Reaver.
I'll to sum it up as best I can; cause there is a lot of stuff going on in the Soul Reaver series.
Okay, from the top, it's vampire game, gothic style fantasy setting. Raziel, protag of the game, is betrayed and then killed by Kain, his lord, master, and the one to 'bless' him and his 4 other brothers with Vampirism. Razi wakes up in the spectral realm, chats with a giant squid that controls fate itself (voiced by Tony Jay), who had revived and it tells him: 'go, redeem yourself, avenge yourself, kill your master, your brothers, free their souls so the wheel can turn again.'
Basically, Vampires mess the fate wheel up.
Skip ahead, skip ahead, you kill all your brothers, you find your master again, and he's in a chamber that belonged to a time streamer. You fight him, he gets the machine running, then is like 'peace out' and goes through the time portal. You follow, and that's where the timie-whimy stuff starts happening.
Turns out Kain has been using time traveling shenanigans time and again to try, try, try, and try to fix a rigged game. Destiny had something prepared for him too, but he got fucked from the jump. Razi too has his own destiny to fulfill, but it's not the one he thinks it is. The whole time, though, you realize Kain is actually hedging everything on Razi, for the sake of restoring balance to the world. A world that doesn't end with endless decay or the extinction of the Vampire race.
Oh, right, should've mentioned that sooner: Their world is basically dying, it's been doomed, and it'll never stop. It's Kain's fault (or is it?) but he's right about this: the shit's rigged.
That's where a lot of the timie-whimy stuff happens. You get told by him directly in the first and the impression through the second game that Kain has been doing time jumping stuff for eons. Then Razi came into the picture and, suddenly, there's now a third option that might just help him accomplish something he's been striving towards for eons.
It's not exactly what your asked for, but it hits some of the beats. It's an old game, and there's a few videos online that do the entire story's cutscenes from all three games out there. The whole point the series is the struggle against preordained destiny, and the defiance against a crooked game set by an eldritch parasite.
Bare in mind, this is not a perfect synopsis for the series if my paraphrasing isn't telling enough. Honestly, it's a series you really need to delve into yourself or watch the cinematics for. The dialog and storytelling are great, the voice-acting outstanding, and it's honestly where my mind goes anytime I think of time-travel.
It's dated, it's a classic, and it's hands down my favorite game of all time.
