Wetmoreana ochraceofulva

This crustose lichen has a yellow-orange thallus with a lobate perimeter radiating out of an areolate central thallus. It produces rounded isidia along the areole margins, and occasionally from the surface of the lobes. It rarely produces apothecia, which are concolorous or slightly darker than the thallus, rounded, and often cracked. W. orchraceofulva grows on rock in Africa, the Arabian peninsula, and South America. A 2024 study (find link below) elucidated the taxonomic position of this and similar species in the genus, hopefully leading to more successful field ID and a greater understanding of the ecology and range of this charismatic group well into the future!
