It never ceases to surprise me how self-destructive Luffy is. I mean, surprise isn't the best word to describe the feeling, but I'm always a little taken aback by it. It shows even in minor situations, such as when Dorry trapped Luffy under that gigantic skull so he wouldn't interfere with his fight with Broggy. He slammed his head on the floor several times because he needed to get out and do something but was helpless. In fact, slamming his head like that seems to be the first instinct after something happens that causes desperation, like in Amazon Lily right after finding out Ace died or when the entire crew disappeared in front of his eyes in Sabaody. He will literally self-destruct to manage whatever he needs to do. Getting Nami and Sanji to the top of a 5 thousand meter tall mountain to get medical assistance while bare foot and bare handed, with only shorts and a no sleeve top, surrounded by snow and wind. Giving away years of his life to save Ace. Trying to literally rip off his arms in Whole Cake Island because he cannot lose someone else.
It just hurts me a lot anytime I see him doing something like that.
Nami went through a phase where she got moody about her inability to draw anything other than a map, so now Usopp hosts Art Club every week where he gives her tips and they just draw.
Chopper and Luffy also join because it's fun, soon its a whole crew ritual!
After coming back from the Time skip Usopp has dedicating workout time with Zoro to help him maintain the new physique
Zoro secretly LOVES it. He thrives on seeing the crew get stronger.
Sanji grows his own tobacco plants because it's more cost effective and he cannot be caught without a pack
Franky has to build a greenhouse specifically to keep usopps plants away from the rest of the plants on board
Chopper has been caught sleep eating the grass in the lawn a few times.
Luffy doesn't like reading, but does like being read to, it started with Makino, then Sabo, and now story time with Robin is a staple.
The whole crew comes to listen, Brook provides musical as a backdrop
Nami controls the roster for whose on watch(I can actually make the watch rosters a whole separate list)
Usopp definitely knows what the code to the fridge is, but is smart enough not to admit it
Sanji or Usopp are the most likely to get the strawhat jolly roger tattooed
Sometimes it's not a cigarette Sanji is smoking, it's a joint.
Robin isn't the biggest fan of earrings but still agrees to let Nami pierce her ears.
There is definitely a Fishman card game that Franky and Jimbe play during parties. Tom taught Franky, but until he joined the strawhats he didn't have anyone to play with(it hurt too much to teach it to the franky family)
Nami kicks his ass at it everytime(he's never able to catch her cheating) it's how he learned never bet money on a card game against her
But Jimbe is a good sport so they play over drinks
Jimbe and Robin are the only one who can ever catch Nami cheat at cards(she cheats just like Arlong used to but he'll never be dumb enough to say it to her face)
Robin spent 20 years suppressing her West Blue accent into total neutrality, but it pops up sometimes when Brook and her speak.(you know what I can also do a whole list on accents and languages)
Kitetsu is responsible for Zoro getting lost, but Wado is responsible for him showing up exactly where they need him to.
One of the 1st times Zoro and Sanji agreed/did together was on teaching Nami hand massages/stretches that help her relieve her hand pain from years of overuse.
I love the Heart Pirates đĽ°âĽď¸. Would you write sth for the relationship Law and his crew (especially Bepođť)? Does Law love his crew just the same as he loves Cora?
Sure, this will be that post :D there isn't that many Hearts Pirates scenes in the manga, so it will probably end up being more Hearts appreciation post than strict analysis :) but I will do my best! Also I will use some neat quotes from the novel, in case you want to skip those they're all written in italics so it's easy to avoid them!
Also really sorry it took me forever to get to this ask!
Let's introduce our power rangers Sora-fanboying crew. That idea probably got born all the way back in the North Blue, when Law, Bepo, Penguin and Shachi were living together as children and sharing stories and talking into late night hours before falling asleep.
First of all, Hearts Pirates are strategists. All crewmates know their roles they have to play in a battle. There's always someone responsible for the Polar Tang, usually it's Hakugan (taking care of the ship so it doesn't get damaged is essential, because that ship is not only their means of travelling but also their home). There are people responsible for providing cover (Shachi and Penguin, Law's most trusted guys besides Bepo). There is a bodyguard - Jean Bart (or should I call him a tank? :D), making sure Law doesn't get hit when preparing powerful counterattacks.
Second of all, the biggest strength of Heart Pirates isn't their individual feats, fighting skills or not even their ace in the sleeve - the overpowered captain. Their true strength lies in their teamwork. They always work like a team, supporting each other and cooperating to help Law win his battles.
Hearts are apparently very strong in sea battles. Seems their usual strategy is to go for sinking the enemy's ship (very sly and effective). They're also good at fighting in the water, which is refreshing in comparison to many other crews depending solely on devil fruits powers.
Also RIP Polar Tang :(
Bepo has actually the most jobs to do, surprisingly. He's the navigator, he's the main attacker who often plays support for Law, but he also uses his mink/animal senses to track down enemies and instruct where each crewmate is needed! He's definitely very reliable.
âSorry, I got nothing. If only I was a smarter polar bear⌠Iâm no use, I should just disappear.â
âHah hah! Just having strong legs doesnât make you the best at peddling, Bepo. Man, you really are clumsy. You were so wobbly I thought for sure you were going to crash. It was scary just watching you!â
âHm, youâre right. I wonder why I canât ride a bike to save my life⌠Iâll just leave and figure my life out then.â
Despite Bepo's poor self-esteem, he's a really good fighter. Bepo's kung-fu (bear-fu? :D) fighting style is so unique too. Law often trusts him to "take care of things". Bepo has also one more powerful ace up his sleeve, his sulong form, though apparently he can't control it at all. It's only thanks to Chopper's rumble ball that Bepo was able to control his form for the very first time, without even a full moon visible in the sky.
Of course Bepo is also a very outstanding navigator. I mean, I dare you all to try to draw a better map with those huge paws! They're not exactly suited to hold a pen!
I do have to mention though that Law had a momentary pause before finding their current location ("around here") on this map, haha. He would never admit it though. He's so proud of his navigator! Also, keeping that map with him must have made Law happy, because he got reminded of Bepo even when he wasn't with him.
It's so tattered too and needed some tapes ;-;
Bepo is also, sort of, second in command after Law. He's responsible for new recruits who work directly under him. That gives us some sort of insight in how the hierarchy works in Hearts crew. There is Law whose word is absolute, then Bepo, then Shachi and Penguin, then the rest, then the fresh recruits.
It's not quite like in Strawhats where everyone is more or less equal in their positions. Even in the novel Law sometimes calls them friends and sometimes underlings, but in Punk Hazard and Egghead he instead calls them "nakama" (his crewmates, companions), so that apparently has changed at some point as Law grew up.
These two are my subordinates! I wonât let scum like you call them âthingsâ!
I let out a large sigh. I have to keep it together. I have to protect my underlings. My friends.
Bepo, Penguin, Shachi. I told you to be my underlings, so I have a responsibility as your boss.
As much as Law treats his Heart Pirates as equals, his responsibility over them makes him take a higher position over them. But he doesn't interfere much in how they organize things around each other. Bepo took it on himself to be the second in command and Law never protested or questioned that. Basically their importance in the crew is based on the order in which they joined.
âHold on, both of you ate three pieces and I only had two! You guys are new here, so you should be putting me first!â (Bepo complains while Law thinks to himself:) I should have just given them all equal portions to begin with instead of piling everything on a single plate; thatâs what I think as I quietly shovel my fourth piece into my mouth.
Law himself is a bit sneaky, he might think he should make sure things are more equal around his crew, but at the end of the day he just doesn't do anything about it. They're free to do whatever they want. That's the type of captain he is.
When Wolf is out of the house, the four of us work on the farm, go fishing, clean, and do the laundry. During free time, each of us will focus on the things we want to do. I spend most of my time reading medical books and learning how to use my power. Bepo uses his time to study navigation. Penguin and Shachi simply have a desire to get stronger. But since their way of doing things didnât allow them to improve, I had to borrow weapons from Wolf and teach them swordsmanship and gunnery. Seeing someone I'm teaching getting better at it is more rewarding than I thought it would be. Whenever I see how happy Penguin or Shachi are when they hit the bullseye, I canât help but smile.
Law also trained them all by himself.
But back to Bepo. He's also a bit of a silly bear who needs to be looked after. He doesn't stand the heat very well, he's a bit of a slow thinker, he also panicks very easily and often calls out to Law to save him or stay with him. And that feeling is usually mutual, because Law also wants to take care of him:
âDonât worry, Bepo. Even if you get injured and covered in blood, Iâll fix you up at the clinic.â
âAssuming I do get injured! Aye-aye!â
Hah hah. What a goof.
Bepo is a bit like a younger sibling to Law, he can be strong but also very clumsy and silly, and it for sure appeals to Law's protective side. He kinda stepped up (it was probably subconsciously) to be a temporary older brother figure for him in absence of Zepo. He was ready to throw away his Wano's raid plans just because Bepo had a stomachache and asked him to stay by his side. Bepo is also the only person Law has any sort of physical closeness with. Those two grew really close with each other.
But Bepo is dependable when it matters. He was also a guardian of Whale Forest back on Zou, so Law isn't the only one who recognizes that quality in Bepo.
âLaw, I brought you some hot tea. Itâs made with tea from the old manâs garden. He said it helps calm nerves.â
âThank you, Bepo.â
âNo problem. Youâve been having nightmares a lot lately.â
âI know. I must be worrying Penguin and Shachi too.â
âYou donât want to talk about it?â Bepo asked with an earnest look on his face.
âNo; right now, I canât get my own thoughts together, sorry.â
âItâs fine. But Iâm here if you ever want to talk about it.â
Law is close friends with Penguin and Shachi as well, but it seems it's Bepo he confides in most of the time. It might be because Bepo shows his concern and care very openly, making it especially hard for Law to refuse or dismiss it. And it's a good thing, because Law really needs someone openly caring and loving like Bepo in his life.
Bepo is clearly higher in command than Penguin and Shachi, and they both respect him despite the rocky beginning of their friendship:
âThat's what you thought while they beat you?â
âYes. I thought if I let them do it, maybe we could become friends.â Friends. Itâs a word I hadn't heard in a long time. I no longer have any. They were all burned in a fire. (âŚ) As my mind wanders, I begin to wonder why a polar bear is here, alone. Actually, if I think about it, heâs probably just like I had been before. I've become a little more interested in his situation.
Law's crew respects him and looks up to him, but they also voice out their own opinions and approvals or lack there of. They also occassionally allow themselves some really lewd comments, like in the picture above :D I bet you anything they would also call out Law on acting cute if they saw him with Chopper strapped to his head.
Damn, Penguin even looks like he's a bit jealous of Chopper's position. They fanboy Law so much despite being slightly older than him!
Shachi and Penguin are Law's intel and watchers. Penguin seems to be the smarter one out of the two of them, basing it on the rational comments he makes. But Shachi's skills in the water are also nothing to sneeze at! And as a bonus skill, Shachi apparently cuts the hair for others in the crew.
âHey, you two.â I call Shachi and Penguin calmly. âYou have nowhere to go, do you? I know you can't go back to your relatives' house either.â
âThat is the only place we would never return to.â
âAlright; then you won't. Be my subordinates. And for now, you can live here.â
The four of usâmyself, Bepo, Penguin and Shachiâhave experienced immense loneliness in this world, and somehow managed to overcome despair.
I think it's possible Law recruited everyone in his crew in similar fashion (of course his first three friends remain special regardless). He seems to have easier time to relate to people who know how despair feels like and he wants to help them leave that feeling behind, to see things from a different perspective, to show them that no matter what, there are still probably other ways out, and if there aren't, he will make one happen.
Heart Pirates are also responsible for lesser tasks so that Law himself doesn't have to do it, like keeping an eye on Luffy.
Some Hearts, like Clione, Uni and Ikkaku even disagreed with the idea of the alliance. At first I thought Law told his crew that they don't have to get along with the Strawhats, because he respected that some might feel uncomfortable doing that, but nah, in the end it was just payback for Luffy not introducing Law to his own crew properly.
It's not the only time Law's crew complained to him so directly. When they were supposed to enter the New World, Law told them they need to wait and that they need to shut up and listen to him, because they should trust his plans. Despite his crew's big enthusiasm and competitive spirit, they were actually a bit scared to enter the New World, because when they saw beasts in the calm belt they definitely panicked a bit. So Law's decision was probably the right course of action.
Bepo also isn't afraid to scold his captain, when Law stares at yonko instead of escaping Marineford or when he chooses to drop down the waterfall in Wano. Law always seems to win each and every time tho. They also have no fear on calling him out for showing off ;)
Let's not forget that despite the fact that Heart Pirates can voice their complains openly, they were still kinda left in the dark and learned about the alliance from the newspaper. Ouchie, Law :D Nami might have a point when she said Law is just like Luffy.
They're very loyal, not only to Law, but to each other as well. They also share their duties on Polar Tang, like cleaning or maintaining the submarine, all together.
âYou⌠no, the lot of you can really help others without asking anything in return, huh.â (Wolf about Law, Shachi, Penguin and Bepo)
Shachi, Penguin and Bepo always accompany Law wherever he goes.
His whole crew protects him whenever they can.
And of course they love him so much. Law might be a grumpy captain, but he for sure returns the love he received from them, in his own way. Let's not forget Bepo, Penguin and Shachi were there for him when he lost everyone again, after what happened to Cora-san. They basically supported each other in their biggest time of need.
Despite some of them protesting, they all get along with Strawhats in that alliance in the end :) Hearts are also very fun loving people, who definitely like to party :D
Law might be quite overprotective about his crew, but he does trust them enough to take care of themselves and pick their own battles in the Onigashima's raid. Hearts also worry for Law a lot and cheer him on and celebrate his won battles â¤
âHmph. Well, alright then. Itâs just that when youâre not feeling well, the rest of the lot are out of it too.â (Wolfe said this to Law, suggesting that whenever Law is feeling under the weather, it affects his friends)
I have to act strong. I have to act cool. If I stay gloomy in this situation, the other three will continue to live in fear. I canât let that happen. (Law to himself)
At first Law didn't think much about his responsibility over his crew, he learned that along the way and thanks to Wolf's guidance. He decided to do everything he can so he can protect his friends and show them that they can rely on him, and they make sure to return the favour.
Now let's take a moment to celebrate Penguin and Shachi being little horny perverts ;)
In the end, I'm the only one scolded by Wolf. Bepo and the other two look at me like they are sorry, but I know that tomorrow things will be exactly the same. Since weâve been living together, Iâve learned that these three will forget their transgressions in a dayâs time.
This is probably another reason why Law chooses to ignore most of Hearts antics :D
I gotta say Shachi is certainly having hots for Penguin, basing it on this image ;) or at least he would be even more into him if he had, well, bigger tits.
Now we all know Law left his crew on Zou so that Doflamingo doesn't use them against him in the fight. But did you ever wonder why Law recruited Jean Bart into his crew? Saving a slave is one thing, but taking him into his crew is another. I think Law cares for his crew so much that he recruited someone strong and experienced as a captain who can take care of them in case Law can't (in time of need when he's missing in action, but also in case something went horribly wrong and they would be left without a captain). Recruiting Jean Bart was a strategic move and I believe it's to make sure someone takes care of the Heart Pirates in Law's absence.
âI definitely want to see my brother," Bepo said after a long silence. âItâs fun living here with everyone and all, but sometimes I think of him. I wonder if heâs doing okay, or if something happened to him. Thatâs why Iâve continued studying navigation since I got here. Iâm terrible at it, but I can finally draw maps. So I definitely want to set out to find my brother some day, I think.â
This is one of the reasons why Heart Pirates ventured into Grand Line, besides Law's motivation to fullfill Cora-san's wish. He actually made sure to fullfill Bepo's wish before his very own one!
And finally, to answer your second question in the ask: does Law love his Heart Pirates as much as he loves Cora-san? I will allow Law to speak for himself, quoting the novel:
What was Cora-san for me? We had no blood relationship, and we didn't even know each other that long. Yet somehow, we were family. A love that could be felt without even putting it into words. I was wondering if I could love someone like that again. If I stay with Junk-ya and the bear, can I come to love them? Or will it continue to be a give and take relationship, as the old man says, where we just use each other?
After Wolf signed his name, we all followed suit. Seeing all our names next to each other on the paper, itâs strange. It is almost like we were a family.
Actually, we all looked happy, myself included. This place is definitely irreplaceable to me, I realized once again.
I canât keep looking backwards; I have to move forward. Together with the happiness of being with friends, no matter how much I waver.
I found some salted fish that was on sale, so I bought it. In my head popped the pleasantly surprised faces of Bepo and the old man, and the expressions I imagined soon became my own.
Two months have flown by since the five of us started this life together. Eating meals, bathing, thinking of games to play, and bullshitting together under the same roof. It's the type of life I had never experienced until now.
But I have friends nowâI have people who can allow me to forget the pain and the rage by distracting me with stupid things. Thatâs all I need.
And in case you wonder how did Law ask them to become a pirate crew together, here you go:
âI'll be leaving the island in a week. What do you want to do?â I ask them the question, trying to stay as natural as possible. âI will not force you to do anything. You can very well continue to lead the same life, to eat with the old man by exchanging jokes and get on with your job in town. Only, if⌠if you ever⌠wanted to come, then⌠that⌠that would help me a lot.â
(and after they all enthusiasthically agree:)
âAlright, I know I can count on you. That's all I'm saying.â
And from that moment on, Law gives them a name: Heart Pirates. Because they're a crew that belongs to Law, but also to Cora-san, and that's the meaning behind the name. If Cora-san lived, Hearts would be *his* crew as well. In some alternative reality, they could all be happy together sailing the seas.
So I guess, my final answer is: Law loves them because he found friends in them, his new family, and he wished he could share this happiness with Cora-san as well. I doubt there are many people out there who would get that privileage! Heart Pirates are definitely irreplaceable to him.
Cora considering his death and what he'll leave behind is such an interesting facet of his character. Because it moves from him considering how people will remember him to making the decision to push down his own humanity and flatten himself into an image for the sake of his loved ones. We see this initially in his relationship with Sengoku.
Sengoku adopted Rocinante after Homing's death. Not a lot is known about the intervening years between the adoption and Rocinante reappearing as Corazon, but it's clear that the two have a strong bond.
To Sengoku, Rocinante was a loyal, honest, dutiful son and subordinate.
If Law had not entered into the picture and Cora died during his mission, that's the image Rocinante would have left Sengoku with.
To Law, Rocinante was an avenger who fought tooth and nail to get him the treatment he needed even if it meant acting immorally, lying to Sengoku, and cheating the marines out of the Op-Op fruit.
He actively rejects being a Marine for Law's sake and embraces being Cora.
Right before his confrontation with Doflamingo, Cora considers what image he wants to leave Law with (which is also the image Law will flatten him down into after his death.) He decides to leave him with a smile even though he's in a horrific amount of pain, making the smile garish and uncomfortable.
In his marine photo Rocinante isn't smiling and looks overly serious which doesn't match how innately goofy he is. In the final smile he leaves with Law, Cora is putting his pain aside to make sure Law is left with a happy image (just like Homing did before he died). Both images deny Cora's full character/humanity for the sake of those he loves.
Cora accepted the infiltration mission knowing he would die in the process. He was always going to die for something. He thought it would be for Sengoku (and Dressrosa) but when he met Law he cast that image aside to die and exist as whatever Law wanted him to exist as.
But what's interesting is that he then uses both identities as a way to distance himself from being flattened into being Doflamingo's Corazon. And it's when he stands up to Doflamingo using both identities, that the audience is introduced to who Cora is at heart.
It's like what Doflamingo (and Law) say the weak don't get to choose where they die but Cora did.
And it's this amount of consideration over how he would be remembered that makes Cora feel even more actively suicidal than previously thought.

Messy Thoughts ⢠Connections between the Diezâ, Rosinante, Law, and the Op Op fruit
â˘â˘
Just thinking about how Diez Barrels was a marine turned pirate, who had a son but mistreated him severely and then was killed by Doflamingo over the Op Op fruit.
Just thinking about how Rosinante was a marine that went undercover as a pirate but abandoned his mission, who essentially adopted (for lack of better wording) a son and tried to care for him as best he could, and then was killed by Doflamingo over the Op Op fruit.
Just thinking about how Diez Drake is a marine working under cover as a pirate, and the Op Op fruit (Corazonâs stealing of it) gave him the freedom to escape his father and his crew.
Just thinking about how Law is a pirate that was given every freedom he never had because of the Op Op fruit.
Thereâs just so many connections but Law and Drake never actually talk abt it bc theyâre unaware of it, talk abt dramatic irony.
I need to re-read One Piece soon, but here's a thing.
I think the biggest bit of unplanned foreshadowing of the series is in the Sabaody arc, and it's the fact that Law's first big appearance after his introduction is in the auction house.
It's foreshadowing because that auction house was under the jurisdiction of Doflamingo, and we know how strongly these two characters ended up being connected to each other.
It's unplanned because Law and all the other supernovas were a last minute add, created a couple of days before their debut chapter was published.
It's still a crazy coincidence to think about though. And it's also crazy to think that Smiles were name dropped right at this point.
Even though it was a rushed concept, I think Law and Doflamingo having some links was planned from the moment Law was created.
Maybe it wasn't meant to be something big but Oda wanted to create a pirate heavily referencing Doflamingo. That's why their reputations and jolly rogers are similar, their lanky builds, sets of earrings, and colorful aesthetics are similar, the ruthless-cheerful vibe in their early appearances resemble too.
Perhaps, Law was meant to be Doffy's 'trusted' spy who was slowly slipping out of his control. Or an ex-subordinate who really hated him. Basically, I think their beef is a thing as long as Law has existed.
I absolutely love this because no matter Oda's original intentions it creates these really interesting key points and gaps in Law's story where we just don't know exactly what was going on. Just the fact that Doflamingo and the rest of the Donquixote Family didn't realize Law wasn't on their side until the end of Punk Hazard implies a whole bunch of things that are endlessly fun to build headcanons from.
I also think unintentional foreshadowing counts just as much the intentional, because writing isn't a linear craft. I personally love all the loose threads and glaring question marks in Law's story, especially the shift from laughing weirdo with the hearts in Sabaody to lonely, heartless warlord in Punk Hazard. What happened there? I've seen people argue that this change was just Oda deciding to go in a new direction, rather than it being character development with narrative significance and to that I say booooo. They are both him, at different points in his life.
About Sabaody Law though: His hunched posture, creepy hands and being named after a famously sadistic real world pirate (Edward Low) sure gives him a Doffy air and I think that's wonderful. No matter how you choose to interpret Oda's intentions it implies that they're connected and that's all you really need to go forward.
We meet Law after the same 2 year time skip as the other characters, so it's kind of interesting to think that he probably had the same training arc as the other characters! Like he's clearly stronger than on Sabaody, partly to keep up with the epic scale of the post-time jump, but he's also simply done some growing! He's filled out just like the rest of the characters who got older, and feels more like he has a plan than he was just there and got caught up in a fun 'lil brawl.
He is a doctor, and even though he picks and chooses who he treats, I always kind of thought that maybe the kinds of people he had to hunt to get 100 hearts would have stressed him out on top of pushing his growth. Law seems to have a different kind of complicated relationship with Marineford because he found out Cora was a marine but was kind of abandoned? by Sengoku perhaps, and Vergo on top of all of that. Like at the best he finds them rather useless and if we're sticking with the theme, he finds them guilty of myriad small to medium-large evils.
All that to say, picking 100 people bad enough to permanently put at the mercy of the navy probably isn't hard per se, but it might make someone a bit upset to interact with them, and he was supposedly setting up his big bring Doffy down plot in the time-skip, so he was directly confronting trauma he may have otherwise been sailing around avoiding while doing piratey things for almost 14 years.
For the most part I think Oda's done a good job utilizing the Supernovas, but I am pretty disappointed with how Kidd's story turned out. Oda puts in a lot of legwork this arc setting him up as a foil for Luffy, and it's a sort of narrative promise that doesn't get fulfilled to its ultimate potential. Kidd and Luffy don't interact enough for them to bounce of each other. I could have accepted Kidd getting jobbered as an example of how his brand of hot-headed brute strength doesn't cut it in the political landscape of the New World--kind of like a post time skip Moriah--but that story thread didn't get enough attention to make it feel meaningful, especially compared to how much Law's story completely took over the plot after he skyrocketed in popularity.
It's an example of how Oda making shit up on the spot has its downsides. The Supernovas are Oda planting a bunch of seeds for the future seeing what sprouts up from the mess. It leads to some unexpected surprises like Capone Bege on WCI, but also plot lines that wither on the vine before they can bear any fruit.
I 100% agree that Kid got shafted & basically forgotten, but to be honest I just....don't care. lol. I do not feel like anything was lost like op feels. His disappearance from the story doesn't really stand out as an objective failure to anyone outside his dedicated fan base. At least, not so much that it's a glaring failure of Oda's writing like maybe some other things that happened/not happened in the story.
I'm not trying to say Kid as a character sucks and I know there are a decent amount of fans very attached to him, but if it's a toss up between Law or Kid for focus I'm choosing Law every time. I just do not believe any backstory/plot line Oda could've came up with for Kid would've been able to measure up with what we got out of Law in Dressrosa.
Honestly, if Oda wasn't planning on going full villain with Kid then I can really only see him ending up as One Piece's version of Bakugo from MHA. While I love Bakugo I do think his specific trope is pretty overused in shonen at this point & he is the best modern example we have. So much so I fear anyone else trying to do the same would fall short in comparison. Oda might've thought something similar and decided Law would be more fun to work with & thus Kidd got sent to the background. And franky, I'm glad for it. I think we're living in the best timeline.
something that breaks my heart is how easily thatch died. thatch, the fourth division commander of the whitebeard pirates, mustâve been incredibly powerful. the whitebeard commanders we know in detail: marco, oden, ace, izou, jozu, vista, etc, are renown as some of the most powerful characters in their respective fortes each. the whitebeard pirates were titans of the pirate world, and to hold a position of power in their ranks is placing you easily among some of the most powerful in one piece almost inherently.
but thatch died without a fight to our knowledge, thatch died quietly, found in a pool of his own blood, body already cold. thatch died very literally stabbed in the back, in the middle of the night without last words that would reach anyoneâs ears. itâs brutal and more than anything, itâs so unpleasantly bitter.
i think how he died is very symbolic of the whitebeard pirates as a crew. a man who, while we donât know in combat, is at least comparable to the commanders we do know. his faith and family-orientated love was so unwavering it caused a man like that to die swiftly and silently. while blackbeardâs power pre-devil fruit is nothing to undermine, especially given the wound he gave shanks, i refuse to believe thatch wouldnât of at least been able to defend himself briefly; long enough to be heard. thatch died with unquestioning love in his heart, not for one second was his guard up, and only in teachâs gross abuse of that trust did thatch succumb. thatch died so easily, and nothing hurts more than that.
all the whitebeard pirates died for love. oden died, tortured and shot, after holding his loved ones above his head for an hour so they wouldnât boil alive alongside him. thatch died with unquestioning adoration, stabbed in the back by a member of his cherished family. ace died indirectly as a result of trying to avenge thatch, and directly by defending luffy in the pinnacle of marineford, protecting his little brother until his last breath. whitebeard died attempting to rescue ace, falling victim to hundreds of wounds in his path as he clambered to save his son. ultimately, the bullet that would kill him was from the gun of the son that betrayed him. izou died in sacrifice, telling his younger sister to live. he died fighting against enemies who intended to hurt aceâs little brother and who wouldâve doomed his homeland if they succeeded. whitebeard pirates are so kind, love is as natural to them as breathing. i am hoping, in some way, there will be a resting conclusion to all the suffering they have been dealt so horribly. they are so full of love, and that makes their story so tragic.
like iâm at lawâs backstory. seĂąor pink and lao g are explaining to baby 5 how flevance got destroyed and thereâs bits of laws life before joining the donquixote family.
he watches his younger sister get sick and so does everyone around him; as far as he knows, thereâs no cure. his town is being quarantined due to amber lead disease being labeled âcontagiousâ (itâs not) and if someone from flevance tries to escape, they get shot like theyâre rabid animals. he has to keep a brave face for his younger sister, and his parents (who he thinks are one of, if not the best doctors in town) are in distress. the people of flevance (rightfully) get upset due to them being mistreated by the government thatâs supposed to protect them AND by their neighboring countries so they fight back, but are only met with the navy basically maiming them down for standing up for themselves. and law has to see the people he knows and loves die. heâs begging for his parents to wake up when theyâve been shot. the hospital he told his sister to wait in is on fire, so unless she made it out sheâs gone as well.
and then, when asked about how he managed to escape flevance, law says he HID AMONGST A PILE OF DEAD BODIES????????
like no kid should have to witness that.
and then when cora takes him to the hospital, he has to relive the trauma he faced.
âthey treat me like iâm sub-humanâ
and these are supposed to be DOCTORS??? like educated and all?? theyâre calling a little kid a monster, diseased, just calling law anything BUT a child of God đđ even cora was like âtf? how are you this uneducated as a doctorâ
and i mean its at the fault of the world government bc they KNEW that a) exposure to amber lead could be extremely harmful, but they turned a blind eye and then b) killed the people of flevance when this whole mess couldâve stopped a century ago and finally c) they didnât disprove the notion that amber lead poisoning was contagious. they just let everyone believe it when they couldâve just said âno itâs not, we need to help these peopleâ
i just feel so bad for law. like oh my gosh, no wonder he was so mad at the world. no wonder he wanted to destroy everything he saw because the world did the same thing to him, so whatâs the harm in returning the favor?
i need to give law a hug, in fact letâs give almost every one piece character a hug !

Honestly nobody is doing it like Trafalgar D. Water Law. Heâs German. He hates bread. He keeps to himself. He gravitates towards extroverts. He has a nasty reputation. He doesnât kill people during fights. His first appearance resembles Salad Fingers who smokes weed. Heâs weak to cute things and one of his best friends is a fluffy bear. His moniker is the Surgeon of Death because people thinks his power is creepy. He wants to become a doctor like his parents. He looks emo and edgy with his tattoos. The DEATH tattoo on his hand is the reminder he gave himself during childhood of whatâs at stake while treating patients, and the rest is to honor a loved one. Heâs stressed 24/7 like heâs a workaholic. He spends all his time napping against his emotionally supportive bear and wandering to collect coins. He flips people off. He loves comics and geeks out amidst a battle. Heâs a smart strategist and he knows it. He has never talked down on anyone. He comes off as sadistic and dangerous. He never betrays his ally and gets bullied constantly by the crew of said ally. He wears tragedy like high fashion. At the lowest point in his life he finds out that he has always been loved and never alone.
I love how One Piece Live Action takes these ridiculous designs and then makes them live in the world. Like everyone has blue and green hair in ridiculous styles but then it looks all salt-blasted and frazzled. Their clothes are in bright cartoon colors but they're dirty and sweaty and torn. The buildings have these elaborate whimsical flourishes but they're scuffed and worn and the paint is peeling in the sun.

Sometimes wonder how different Sanji may be, if Zeff allowed at least one woman to cook at the Baratie. Poor Sanji went through puberty surrounded by ex-pirates/convicts. Their version of the talk, was probably giving him some magazines and calling it a day.
It would not surprise me if Sanji told them he wanted the clear clear fruit and a few of the cooks joked about using it to spy on girls, making him think that was the 'normal' reason why people would want it. Little Sanji in a dungeon, did not want that fruit to spy on people.
Thinking about it, Sanji didn't really get the chance to have normal conversations around woman/girls. He didn't get to see his mother much and Reiju helped Sanji in secret. The other men in the crew were able to speak to women. Luffy had Dadan and Makino, Usopp had Kaya, Chopper had Doctorine, Franky had Kokoro and the Franky family. I'm not sure about Brook, he was a knight at some point, which usually means spending some time around women. Jinbei was a guard at Fishman Island, a Warlord and served under Big Mom. Zoro had Kuina, but she did pass away when she was young. Zoro is kinda abrupt with women, but I don't think that is much different than when he talks to guys. If anything, Zoro tends to get bullied by women (in a comical way)
So yeah, it's a shame that Sanji didn't have a woman's presence growing up. Sometimes I feel that he uses the fairytales he read as a kid, as a reference on how to talk to ladies. Not that I don't love my wiggly noodle man, I do. He is silly and I love my silly guys. Sometines watching him, it feels that he wants to express himself differently, but is not sure how.(Thinking of that one scene in WCI that implies that a lot of the flowery language he uses may be a front)
Growing up in a kitchen didn't really help him learn how to speak to men either, now that I think about it đ¤ (also thinking about when men treat him nicely and he sort of short circits)
He is pretty good with kids the majority of the time. He doesn't talk down to them. He encourages them and reassures them. He's more genuine with them I think.
I say all this, but I would be worried if they tried to change Sanji like that. If he tones it down as he grows older, I wouldn't mind that. From the start? Ew that's not Sanji. He needs to sometimes make me want to spray him with water and say down boy.
This is only hypothetical. I don't want to change the characters. If anything, it would be a story au.
I was trying to find the chapter Sanji first talks about the All Blue (for fic research) and noticed that Sanji took Luffy to his room to heal after Don Krieg. I think it's his room
Something about that seems so sweet to me. I can't remember if Sanji is actually aware how important Luffy's hat to him, but I like how he kept it close to Luffy anyway.
I then got distracted by the things Sanji has in his room. I can't really see what was on the shelves at the end of the bed, but you can see some things on the wall.
He has a picture of curly clouds and I think a newspaper article. Maybe the story of when the Baratie first opened.
Then Luffy and Sanji have a chat on Sanji's balcony, about the All Blue. It's a quiet and vulnerable moment between the two of them, where Sanji feels safe.
Sanji's recruitment onto the Straw Hats, just seem so different to the rest of the crew. It's private.
I think most of the times Sanji had a vulnerable conversation and is saved by someone in the crew, it's private. Luffy in Drum Island, Nami at Enis Lobby, Zoro at Thriller Bark and Luffy at WCI. Robin saving Sanji in Wano was probably the least private time Sanji has been saved by a crew member and that moment was seen as a huge moment of growth for him. I look forward to him being seen as vulnerable and saved by lots of people in the future. For him to finally understand that it's OK to be helped by others.

To be fair, where I am in one piece right now (early Wano), I don't know a lot about their relationship, but it's clear they are close.
Kid escapes prison, then willingly turns himself in when Killer is captured. Kid, who bows to no one and is full of bluster and pride, kneels in front of him and cries when he can't stop laughing.
He refers to Killer as his partner. Not his friend, not his best friend, not his crew mate, or vice captain, or right hand man, or brother, or anything else that would have made sense for a close platonic male relationship.
To me, "partner" can be one of two things. It can mean a friendly work relationship, or it can mean an intimate romantic relationship. If Law and Luffy refered to eachother as partner, there would arguments for both, but with Killer and Kid? They aren't just working together. They've been together for many, many years and Kid obviously loves him. Unless I'm missing something or forgetting something, this may be our first confirmed queer relationship. We've had queer characters, but not really a relationship. (I also have a lot more love for Kid now, seeing a more human side to him. I always liked him, but seeing him love someone reminds me that there's more depth to his character)
Messy Thoughts â˘â˘ What Kuma and Ivankovâs Friendship Symbolizes
â˘â˘
Rewatching egghead and had this realization.
Kuma is the son of a religious family, heâs religious, he grew up in a church, he even raised his own daughter in a church. He became the pastor and king of the soba kingdom and created a safe space for his good, simple living people.
Iva, well we donât know much of his upbringing actually but that isnât what matters. Ivankov is queer, he has a fluid gender identity and changes his body to match. Ivankov disobeys the standard self expression through his attire, he wears fishnets, heels, and a latex body suit with a cute cape. He creates and protects queer spaces like the Impel Down Level 5.5 (Newkama Land) and Kamabakka Queendom from the oppression of the outside world.
And theyâre best friends. Itâs fucking beautiful because in our world, so many people have been denied this type of friendship dynamic through social norms and pressures. They both accept each other and their respective quirks and their different backgrounds and theyâre best friends.
Their friendship represents a connected, intimate, and accepting part of humanity that too few receive when all are deserving.
