Take out the racist ass house elf storyline. I would say “change” instead of “take out” but I think there’s no universe in which JKR handles that well, so.

This is less “make it canon” and more “make it more obviously canon vs. subtext” but I think there’s a lot of insanely fascinating and intricate stuff the text is doing with Lily that is hidden very far inside it, and I wish it was more openly explored and explicitly stated, so when I say things like “Lily is portrayed as the true Master of Death” and “Lily and Voldemort are narrative mirrors and framed as symbolic brother and sister just like Harry and Voldemort are symbolic brothers” people would not look at me like I’m crazy.

Wait why are you anti skip?

So it's more that I hate the skip episode than I hate skip the ship or hate Scott or Kip as characters, to be clear.

I hate the skip episode for a lot of reasons:

1 I find its premise queerphobic. The story about the closeted gay man who makes his out gay partner suffer in the closet is an age-old queerphobic trope that has been mostly written by straight people, and it has influenced our culture's perception of the closet. It frames the open gay partner as being a victim of their closeted gay partner who unfairly refuses to come out. It also comes with this added implication that the problems queerphobia forces queer people to face can basically just be solved by coming out, when in reality the entire reason the closet exists is to protect queer people from queerphobia. You see this perpetuated quite horribly in the skip story - the conflict in that episode is entirely caused by Scott being closeted, then later, when he does come out, voila! Problem solved! No repercussions for being openly queer in the NFL/MLH here!

2 I knooooooow it's a romance okay and I know I'm expected to suspend my disbelief about some things, but Scott basically asks Kip to move in day one (before even going on a real date), acknowledges out loud that that's way too much way too soon, and Kip agrees to move in anyway. And later, we see the toll this takes on Kip - he's even not seeing his dad anymore (for some mysterious reason I'll get to in the next point). And I'm sorry but...I don't find that romantic. I find that seriously creepy. Like, if that happens in real life, alarm bells are going off. Kip should be making plans to fucking escape. I know part of the reason it's written this way is because they condensed the story and so things had to move fast but the result is still fucking creepy. It really turned me off to their story.

3 The writing is much worse. It is painfully excruciatingly a fan fic, which makes it all feel convenient and cheesy and phony and boring. I feel like I'm watching a hallmark movie. But also, in order to use this same premise despite condensing the story so drastically, Kip mysteriously stops seeing his dad (nothing is stopping him), refuses to simply tell people that he's dating a closeted man (for no obvious reason), and was only in that closeted relationship with that man a few months before he apparently couldn't bear it anymore...which is so deeply silly, I'm sorry. There are straight people not introducing their families to their partners after a couple of months. Plenty of straight people aren't even considering their relationship exclusive or official after a couple of months. But I'm supposed to believe it's become too much to bear for them? Never mind that it's like, Kip. You fucking knew he was closeted when you agreed to be with him. You knew exactly why that was, and you knew it was a good reason. How the hell do you feel slighted right now?

4 I generally think bottle episodes are an easy shortcut out of doing the hard work of intertwining a side characters story with the main characters story. It throws off the rhythm of the whole show. It puts me in a position to start from scratch with brand new characters, and to deal with not getting to see the characters I already invested myself in and agreed to care about in ep. 1. (I'm using the term agree here because I'm referring to a writing concept: Basically, everything you're going to expect your audience to do in order to enjoy your story, you have to set up in the premise).

5 Because there's a skip episode, the Hollanov story got less time. This isn't all on skip. I would prefer more episodes instead, believe me. But there were only six. And skip got one, and now, neither story got the amount of time and attention they need to be given the justice their story deserves. Incorporating the skip story, which is already weaker and more unlikeable (to me personally), therefore hinders the stronger story I actually liked.

But while I'm here, all respect to people who do love the skip episode. I'm happy for you. It's awesome people are getting something out of it I didn't. I've read some perspectives on it that have made me hate it less too.
