smallville is fun because Lex is sort of narratively set up as that bad boy that Clark's parents want him to stay away from with dark motivations and a dangerous past etc but in the actual show he's like the damsel in distress and a neglected puppy at the same time who Clark keeps saving and Lex just sort of goes all lit up smiling every time it's apparent Clark cares about him. and then Clark saves his life for the ten time that month.

i’m exhausted so i have no idea if this is going to make any sense at all but the tragedy of sv clex really is just. they both wanted to know they had a true friend in the other and to know they were being seen for who they were and not what they had to offer. and that need presented in directly opposing ways. lex kept digging because it killed him that clark didn’t trust him. and the more lex dug the more clark felt as if lex didn’t care about him as a person and their friendship was never real. but the reason why it was so god damn important to lex in the first place was because he wanted more than anything to have a true friend in clark and to be trusted. but clark couldn’t trust lex because he wouldn’t let the secret go. and the tragic cycle goes on and on and on and on forever and ever
The issue with this is that it supposes that Clark confiding in Lex with his secret would've kept Lex from turning down the wrong path. When that just isn't the case. He locked innocent people up in 33.1 for experimentation. When Clark didn't have his memory, Lex tried to manipulate him into telling him his secret. In Lexmas he was handed a clear path on a silver platter to have the life he wanted and he refused it. Clark gave Lex every chance to not be an obsessed psycho. And Lex always chose not to take it.
The tragedy of Lex isn't that he could've been good. It's that he was always going to be evil. And he gaslights the audience into thinking that if someone else did something to help him then it would've been different.

the clear platter in which Lana died in childbirth because he didn’t have the resources to seek medical care for her, cause you know, like, that’s a no-brainer for a good person, let me choose this path that will end up in the death of an innocent bc at least it means I’m worth loving 🤡

Ah yes because as we all know, clowning your secret in front of someone’s face in increasingly obvious ways and being too lazy to actually construct believable cover for your lies is DEFINITELY going to deter someone’s suspicions. I’ll be totally open and honest with you while you lie and lie and lie to me and this will make me a GOOD person, not a doormat.

open the schools, tell me you’re incapable of taking one iteration of a story on its own terms without telling me, tell me your EQ is in the toilet without telling me, etc etc
the 33.1 stuff is indefensible I’ll give you that 😂 but it DID come after Lex’s brain was fried by his father and he was almost killed by way of his father poisoning him, a thing which Clark could have helped him avoid by telling him about ANY SINGLE part of the whole belle reeve arc, so, like, you know. maybe there are no innocents on this show. Only victims of trauma trying to locate safety by way of control.
Nah. We're not doing this. I never once insulted you. The fact that you can't defend your own thesis without an ad hominem fallacy does more to prove my point than it does yours.
did you know it's rude to come on someone else's post when they're expressing an interesting emotional reading of a character dynamic that obviously matters to them with a diametrically opposed take propped up by nothing but a bad-faith misunderstanding of the show or perhaps, what actually constitutes a tragedy?

Rules:
No AI content allowed. If any participant is caught using any form of AI, they will be banned from participating in any other related events in the future.
This event is for Smallville Clex only. That means no works that focus on Clex from any other universe are allowed. Pairings that mix versions of Clark/Lex from different universes are also forbidden—so no 2025 Clark/Smallville Lex, for example. Works that draw inspiration from the comics/DCAU are allowed as long as the characters' background and dynamics are specific to their lore in Smallville. Crossover works where Smallville Clex meet their comics/movies/animated shows' versions are allowed as long as Smallville Clex are the main endgame pairing.
All types of works are allowed! That includes: all forms of writing and fanart, editing, fanvids, playlists, gif, threads, and general meta! OT3s/poly ships are allowed! That includes Clark/Lana/Lex, Clark/Lois/Lex, Clark/Oliver/Lex, or any sort of combination you may come up with, as long as Smallville Clex is included.
Both SFW and NSFW works are allowed! Minors are also allowed to participate as long as their works are SFW.

honestly one of my favorite things about fanfic is when you can see the canon influences come out in really subtle ways. like a canon line thats mentioned once as a throwaway is suddenly the entire premise for a fic or it influences the characterization or something. its just so cool to see how people weave their ideas around a source material, especially if its not a detail i'd thought about before
