The air of Liyue was much warmed than that of Mondstadt, even under the embrace of the moon. It was beautiful, silent in the way nature at rest is, rather than the dead silence of Mondstadt. Yet, as you give a final peer at the lands you now leave behind, you find that deathly silence is slowly giving way to the bush silence of life at rest. It brings a smile to your face, yet the pain keeps you moving forward.
Your eyes catch on miss encroached marble, and you find yourself staring up at a statue. Morax. Rex Lapis. Zhongli. Running a hand over the clothes that drape you, you’re struck by the similarity of them to the ones immortalised in stone before you. The wind laughs as the still air swirls around you, anemo coalescing in a whirlwind before you to shape a being.
“My Liege!” Venti- or it would be more fitting to call him Barbatos currently, “I must say, deepest apologies for my subjects committed atrocities.” He is bowed before you, wings stretched long behind him as he kneels in the dirt, “It is unbecoming of them and I thank you from the deepest corners of my soul for your forgiveness bestowed on my realm.” He finally looks up at you, and it’s uncanny to see him with such a forced smile, such a strained or perhaps restrained expression is so out of place to the carefree man you remember him as.
You want to speak, to enlighten him on how you forgive him, or don’t, to yell and scream for the injustice committed against you, to cry and tell him to stand. Yet words all but escape you, instead, you find yourself finally having the answer to a question you’ve long asked.
His hair really is as soft as it looks. He seems startled by your hand atop his head, or perhaps by the gentleness of it while it’s there. Yet his smile grows a little more genuine, shoulders losing that tension, as he lets your play with the dark strands.
Once you remove your hand he’s bouncing into the air with a wave,
“I really must go help your forgiveness spread within my realm now your majesty, so forgive my quick departure, but with just a want or a call I’ll be by your side at any moment, so until then!” And with a spray of aqua light the winds carry along the path you came until the air is still again.
You wander across plains and alongside rivers as the night becomes day becomes night becomes day again, until a rising building in the distance gives you pause. You glance down at yourself in the river beside you. Are you ready to try this again? To see all the faces you’ve longed to hold and to have? To have those same faces potentially twist in disgust and draw violence to you?
Maybe the wind could carry a message of peace to those ahead of you. Your eyes drift back to the Inn you know so we’ll, and for the first time in many months,
“Venti?” He’s there in a moment, and you see how his head tilts, how his smile grows and his eyebrows furrow before his gaze follows yours and a giggle blooms from his lips,
“Of course my majesty, a warning to keep peaceful for some of the more hot headed would certainly be wise, off I go then!” And indeed he whisks himself away, travelling much faster than you prefer.
It’s such a fascinating idea, so Imma write it ^^
Prompt: What if you were a demon who could cancel contracts? After being a corrupt lawyer in life, and dying to a house fire set by someone you screwed over, you’ve taken on a demonic form much like your human one, but much of your body is charred black, with your hands and feet made of eternally burning coal.
Personally I think you’d want to hide this power, you can’t make contracts due to them dissolving every time you try to sign them, so you can’t grow your power, can’t become and overlord. As a big threat to overlords because of this power, you find that you’d be purely at their mercy should they discover you. Oh such a predicament you find yourself in :)

Prologue (here) - Chap 1 (to come)
When you died, and awoke in hell, it was surprisingly quiet. Yet, all the same you could see the carnage that covered the streets, and wisely you decided to slink into an alleyway to observe things for now. You’d always known you’d end up here, though you thought you’d have a few more years before you’d be damned to the pits of hell. Regardless, you watched as slowly the streets filled with sinners, some cackling at the carnage and some who looked about ready to bolt at a loud voice.
Listening to the idle rantings and conversations of sinners who passed the alley proved fruitful, as you learnt of the power on contracts down here, of agreements that bound one to their word or signature until a clause was fulfilled or broken.Of contracts that handed out a soul and made it inviolable by the now soulless party. It was fascinating. You couldn’t wait to try. You learnt also of sinners undying nature, of the angelic exterminations started to combat the numbers said undying nature created. Staring at the remains of sinners strewn across the streets, never to pull their bodies together again, you swore to yourself you’d not become one of them.
So when a sinner stumbled from a house that made up one half of your little alley, saw the carnage and promptly turned into your alley to escape the sight, your burning hand found their collar and pushed them against the wall. Their frightened eyes were a deep crimson and they hissed and whimpered as their flesh sizzled where your fingers made contact.
Their begging was pitiful, and it made you smile, oh how humans never change. You found your other hand coming to rest near their face,
“How about a little deal? You give me your soul, and I won’t burn your eyes to nothing, here and now, and throw you to the wolves outside.” Not enough to kill them, so the damage wouldn’t revert, yet a disabling act that would leave them at the non-existent mercy of sinners.
They gaped at you, logic battling with fear clear across their face, you inched your hand closer to them,
“Five..” their eyes widened, face paling as you pushed them against the wall harder,
“Four..” they spluttered and cursed, words jumbled and nonsensical,
“Three-“
“Fine! I-“ You loosened your grip just a little, hand drawing back slightly as a glowing piece of parchment formed between you both,
“I’ll sign you my soul just- just- please don’t- don’t do- don’t take my eye sight. Please.” They raised a hand to the parchment, tracing their name across the dotted line on the bottom of the page. You let them go, and reached for the contract to sign it yourself and seal it, yet as your hand made contact the parchment caught aflame and crumbled to ash. You clicked your tongue, an annoyed growl coming from the back of your throat, you glanced down.
The sinner had fallen to their knees, and now stared at you, mouth agape.
“That’s- what? You- but?” You pulled them to their feet once more, “-Ah!” Pouting to the ash on the floor,
“Is that normal?”
“No! No! No, contracts, they- they aren’t meant to the able to be destroyed, not even unfinished ones, especially unfinished ones.” They truly looked startled. Well that’s not good. Well then, you brought your hand up to their neck, pressing into the flesh to leave a deep burn,
“You tell anyone about this and I will hunt you down and make you regret it.” There eyes were wide with pain and fear as they nodded, eyes blurred with tears as the action aggravated the burn you’d pressed into them. Satisfied with your intimidation you dropped them, and for the first time, left your little alley.
Premise - Reader and Zandik grew and learned at the academy together before Zandik was expelled and banished while Reader was out ina month long expedition, yet despite his absence since reader returned, they’ve never forgotten their longest friend and crush.
Now, hundreds of years later you’ve received a work contract for the Fatui, they want to hire you to work on an engineering project under The Doctor. It’s a vague request until you’re signed on, but the recruiter mentions that it’s relevant to your area of studies; the harnessing, utilisation and dynamics of all magic forms in Teyvat.
After signing on, you realise you recognise the Doctor, but he doesn’t recognise you. This is fine, until it isn’t.

You always knew Zandik was more eccentric, and perhaps in possession of looser morals than most in the name of science, but maybe that’s what drew you to him. Your areas of study were different, but you shared a few overlapping classes. Plus your mother had been a doctor and healer, so you could help with some of his biology classes even if you didn’t take them, and he in turn would help you by posing all the questions his brain could contour on your study subjects. Questions from an inquisitive and highly intelligent mind that was removed from the questions and equations you saw so often provided useful insights and new ways to approach problems.
You’d been telling yourself that you’d confess, that you’d finally ask him out when you return. A month away from the academy, away from Zandik, had shown you how deeply you treasured and cared for him. So, the day you got back, you decided, would be the day you finally ask if he’d go on a date with you.
“Oh…” your classmate looks at you with pity and sadness in her eyes,
“What? Why are you looking at me like that?”
“Reader.. Zandik was expelled.” Your heart drops. You can feel how the blood rushes from your face, brain full of static as your classmate gently guided you to sit in a chair nearby. “He was.” She looks to the side, biting her lip as her eyes scan your face. “Are you ok Reader? I’m going to grab some sunsettia juice real quick.”
You listen with burning eyes and an aching heart as she explains Zandiks role in a fellow students death, how he showed neither remorse nor regret in his trial, how he was banished from Sumeru for his crimes. The juice provides an excuse not to respond, though you don’t think she’d expect you to respond either. Everyone knew how you felt about Zandik except the man himself. You’d prided yourself on your professional and friendly conduct with him, people learning of your care only through your words spoken to close friends and overheard in libraries.
Finishing your initial studies and graduating to be a scholar, helping TA classes and tutoring students while being paid for your research is a good life. A fulfilling and interesting life. Yet even with each passing year your heart continues to long for the man you’d spent decades with, spent decades falling further and further for. You tried to find him, searched for mentions of his name, yet all avenues turned up nothing. All your trips to other regions left you disappointed. So after a few centuries, you stopped searching so actively. Maybe you’d never find him. Maybe you’d stumble into him on an expedition. Either way you couldn’t afford to keep pining after a hope of seeing him again when the chances were so slim. He probably didn’t use the same name anymore, with the criminal record tied to it, and with the lack of it appearing anywhere.
So when you received a visit from a Fatui recruiter looking to sign you under contract work for a project under the harbinger The Doctor, you looked at it clinically, as you would any job. The pay was fantastic, the Doctor was also renowned for his work, as gruesome and ethically questionable as it was called, it was still fascinating and brilliant science. Accomodations, board and travel were all paid for, even a small collection of Sneznaya appropriate coats and boots would be given.
The work you’d be doing was incredibly vague, in asking the recruiter of why, they were able to say that it was a highly confidential and important project. So much so they normally would never even consider hiring from outside the Fatuis ranks, but your speciality in celestial magic and archon magic within your studies of Teyvats magics and their workings at large would be highly valuable on this, alongside your considerable portfolio of academic reports and findings built over the years. The recruiter mentioned also that they’d been tasked to find the single most qualified and academically gifted scholar or researcher/consultant based on a long and detailed list of criteria given to them by The Doctor. It had been between you and one other person, but the others knowledge was more broad despite their qualifications and history as both a scholar and collaborator with the Fatui, your knowledge was more specific to what was needed and your qualifications just beat them out to make you top candidate.
The contract period was indeterminate, which made you hesitate at first, but they assured you that you would receive monthly payment until one month after completion of the project or termination of contract due to breach or lack of compliance or contribution, and all paid benefits would remain for four months after the contracts end or until you left Sneznaya.
After reading over the contract with a critical eye to assure all they said was what was written, you penned your signature at the final line.

You took a month to finish up some projects, put some on hold and delegate other tasks to the appropriate peoples, wish farewell to your friends and coworkers and pack your belongings before you finally found yourself escorted onto a ship by the recruiter and ferried away to the land of snow.

You’re given a week to settle into your lodging and acclimatise yourself to your new weather and clothing for the foreseeable future before you’re escorted by Fatui agents to the laboratory.
It’s a marvellous place, filled with more equipment than you’ve seen in one place, black notepads and pens left on every surface, with large but accessible and not in the way tables and benches dotted around. There are a few rolling chairs tucked under desks in random spots across the room and well labelled doors leading to other branches of the building.
The first half of the day is spent touring the laboratory with a researcher who looks exhausted but excited all at once. You find yourself thankful that the place is heated, allowing everyone to leave the heavy coats in a coat room. With how busy some of the spaces are you can only imagine how cumbersome they would become. You can also imagine that the place is heated specifically so that coats aren’t required, rather most people donning protective but thin, aerodynamic and moveable lab coats. You also imagine that research could be rather impossible if your specimens kept freezing solid.
Once you’ve seen the facility in full your brought back to the large main lab you’d started in, and instructed to read through a project brief and wait for the Doctor here in the meanwhile. Taking the brief in question, you pull out a nearby chair and set to absorbing the details of the project as the door clicks shut behind the researcher.
They’re essentially trying to create a false gnosis. As reasoned that as gnosis are physical objects able to be touched by non-archons if not necessarily used in the same way, then non-archons may be able to fabricate something that replicates the effects. There’s a large portion of research written out on the workings of gnosis based on the ones the Fatui posses, and isn’t that something to know, that they posses more than just their own archons gnosis? About how the gnosis’ seem drawn in specific directions for seemingly no reason, how they seem to amplify one another when in proximity, how they seem to create energy and greatly boost the elemental capacity of holders.
A lot of this you already knew, and much of it you can expand upon while other parts are things you were entirely in the dark about. You wish you weren’t under NDA because this is fascinating and provides a lot of insight into the research you conduct.
Approaching footsteps disrupt your reading and you straighten your back as you look up.
And your heart drops for the first time in centuries.
Standing before you is not only The Doctor, as he’s who was supposed to come, and you can see the insignia announcing his position on his vest, but also Zandik. His face is older and more mature, but still entirely recognisable. He chuckles,
“Why, don’t go so pale. We’re going to be working together for a long while so I hope you are able to keep from fainting with a coworker.”
You nod mutely, struggling to find your voice, until finally you manage to strangle out,
“No of course, I’ll be fine. It’s good to. Meet you, Doctor.” The words come out stilted and you find yourself searching his face for recognition to any kind, but all you see is a flicker of amusement behind his eyes as his mouth curls into a smile.
“Wonderful! Now then. Please tell me what you think so far of our research, you seemed quite engrossed in it.”
Your speaking manages to smoothen out as you get into the flow of academics, looking critically at the things they know and adding the things you do where they don’t. He hums and scribbles notes on a clipboard notepad as you talk, reciting knowledge you’ve learned in the time you’ve been apart from him. Pointing out how the could make an attempt to modify their delusions to get a working base prototype as gnosis’ seem to act as conduits much like visions do, if for entirely different energies and pull from only speculated sources.

Months pass and you find yourself growing comfortable in the routine. Create hypothesis for how to modify the base you’re working from to change the channeled energy while working on reducing reduction of life in use of delusions on the side, test how the changes to the base work and record outcomes to inform the next hypothesis.
You’ve managed to make a delusion which can merge with a persons energy core, much like how gnosis’ do with archons, yet the separation proves much more difficult. Often ending up shattering the core of the person and unleashing a fuckton of energy in the backlash, causing many explosions that make you glad you’re behind viewing glass. The ethical and moral dilemmas of hurting the test subjects doesn’t bother you as much as it probably should. Maybe it’s because you’ve always been more academically focused than people focused, maybe you’re being influenced by Zandik/Dottore, as you’ve learned his moniker is, or maybe you’re just morally and ethically more grey or flexible or black than you used to be. You know this all likely would’ve disturbed you at least a bit in your youth.

It’s the day when you both manage to create a base that separates from the host without shattering their core- therefore not killing them and unleashing an explosion the the process- that everything tilts sideways.

The base pulls out of the hosts chest as you and Zandik/Dottore stare instensly, hands both scribbling notes of the process, the signatory light and cracking lighting and screams of a shattering core are absent as the base detatches fully and pure glee lights up your face. It’s been months of attempting to solve this particular issue and you can’t help as you laugh in disbelief, elemental energy sparking around you as your vision sparkles in the dim light, your excitement contagious through the conduit.
“We did it Zandik! We really did it!” You’re writing down all your notes on how the process differed and why you suspect the changes you made helped like they did that you barely notice how still your coworker has become until he speaks.
“What did you call me?”
Your eyes instinctively find his and you find embarrassment and dread creep into your heart as you process your own words. You don’t even know what to say, how to explain who you are, who he is to you, who he’s always been.
“No one knows me by that name. Not in a long time. So how,” he stalks close to you until he can cup you chin in his hand and hold your face looking directly at his, eyes narrow and voice low, “pray tell, do you?”
His grip tightens nearly painfully as the silence stretches between you.
“You really don’t recognise me.” The words slip out without you meaning for them to, a thought spoken aloud when it was intended to never be. His face tilted to face yours more plainly, eyes flicking across your features as if trying to find the secrets of the universe.
He steps back, hand leaving your chin as his arms sweep up to gather your long hair into a ponytail behind you, arranging your hair in various styles before settling into one, a bun that pulled the majority of your hair behind your head, leaving a mimicry of your short hair from his front in view. Then he simply stared, hands frozen in place as the gears turned on his head, his voice low, not a whisper, he was never one to be quiet, but the usual boldness, the usual projection to his voice was absent as he spoke.
“You look so different with long hair, and these thick clothes. Why did you decide to grow it out I wonder, because it was too tedious to keep cutting it? You used to call long hair so cumbersome and distracting.” He smiled then, hands falling away to let your hair rest over your shoulders, stepping back to lean against the bench. “I shouldn’t be as surprised as I am, yet you always were one to do that.” His head tilted to the side, his lips pulling into his regular smirk as, “Though let’s stick with Dottore while in others company, yes? That name is not one I share with others anymore.”

Things didn’t change much afterwards. Mostly the changes were subtle, he was unafraid to stand close to you, often resting a hand on your shoulder or elbow as if for stability when you spoke, when you hypothesised and created plans. He smiled more, laughed at you with more fondness than cruel sadism when you stubbed your toe or nearly dropped something. He’d always acknowledged and trusted your academic intelligence, but now there was a further basis of respect underlying in that trust.
Maybe some researchers notice, maybe you remain in Sneznaya even after the contract expires, the project completed, even if you couldn’t perfectly replicate a gnosis, between you a less powerful version could be fashioned to leech from the celestial nails and statues to boost users. Though the backlash of using it combined with the high resource cost made it not applicable as a widespread weapon, but as a special weapon for a harbinger or archon chosen person could be done.

Kaeya
Sometimes he feels like he sees you in the blackness of his eyepatch, in the blank area that he does not see.
It pushes him to investigate his cases further, to stay sober in the tavern a little longer, to go to his office a couple extra times.
It gives him hope, and is one of his larger reasons for continuing to stay in Mondstadt and help others, rather than vanturing anywhere else on his own.
He never mentions seeing you to anyone, nor how sometimes it feels like you are guiding his actions, how he investigates some things purely because the shadow of you points him to it.
If you weren't there, even if you're just a hallucination, he probably would've left Mondstadt, and gone in search of someone or something, anything from his past. Or some way to cure the burning of his hidden eye.
Diluc
This is entirely why he began as the darknight hero, he will never tell anyone, but he swears he saw you, standing in an alley entrance, gesturing, pleading, for him to enter it. Out of curiosity he did, and found someone being cornered by a stray hillichurl that managed to slip into the city.
That incident is both a large contributer to his belief the knights are incompetent, and why he became the darknight hero, he wanted to honour the people you were trying to protect, urging him to protect.
He feels that doing this is his way of howing you he follows you above all else, that he is devoted to you.
Nilou
Back when she was a child she dreamt of you dancing, or if you don't dance, then of someone dancing for you, and seeing the happiness of you in that dream is what inspired her to commit fully to this career of hers.
Sometimes when she practices late at night she swears she sees you watching from the darkness of the empty plaza, or stands, it almost feels like she's giving you a private preformance, which is why she enjoys practice so much, and what makes her so amazing at her dancing.
When she preforms in big crowds she's never nervous because as she spins and twirls she catches glimpses of you in the shadows of the wings, as if cheering her on and telling her not to worry about the crowds. It reminds her of when she's dancing in an empty theatre with no one watching but the shadows of you and herself.
Nahida
When she was trapped she swears she used to see you sitting on the other side of the barrier, tracing over the patterns that swirled in it's magic. She swears you used to sit and keep her company, and as time went on she swears you used to mouth to her that you'll get her out, that you'll save her.
If anyone close to her asks she'll say that the visage she saw of you got more and more active for a while, pacing around, trying to speak loud enough for it to reach her, until you just dissapeared.
If this dissapearance coincides with when the Traveller appeared in Mondstadt, and she feels the Traveller's gaze upon her as similar as yours? Well, she won't tell anyone, wouldn't want to push you or your vessel away, nor cause any unwanted attention or danger.
Because she's so connected with Irminsul her visages of you are less like seeing shadows of you in your world, but seeing your imprint, your emotions and hopes that linger in your creation given shape until you took a more physical form.
Specifically Zhongli would make sure to make soups and teas he knows you'll enjoy, but won't be too intense or complex, since when you're sick simple foods are easier.
If you don't like tea he'll do his best to mask the taste of it for you, with sugar or honey or some other flavouring.
He'd also make sure that they're nutritious enough, more so than normal, so that you can recover quickly.
He cleans, he's already a clean person, if you don't live with him he'll clean your space unobtrusively, he won't move many of your things, and will put things in any semblance of a pattern or system as he can find in your already away things.
If you live with him it'll already be pretty clean.
He'll bring you fresh clothes and offer you a chair to sit on while he changes the sheets after the first few days, laying on clean, fresh sheets is a lovely feeling, and will also help you get better sooner as you are exposed to your germs less.
He's very methodical and logical, very worried, as he doesn't dela with sickness very much now, but he used to when humans got sick more often. So he has enough experience to care for you without going overboard.
He checks on your symptoms daily, and does his best to keep you comfortable.
He's always around you, reading a book in the corner on a chair, or sitting by your bed as you eat or drink, ready to help if need be, but happy to trust you to feed yourself unless you ask for help.
He still goes out and does work, but any moment where he is not occupied by work or unavoidable social functions is spent either doing things for you or quietly existing in your space to monitor you.
Arlecchino
She's much more quiet in her care. If you refuse food or water she'll sit you up and feed you, quietly but sternly telling you to eat or drink, and then gives a brief but effective explanation as to why it's important.
She will cook herself if she has time, but probably doesn't, so she'll instruct a chef to cook something that will help you return to health.
She's not present all the time, but checks in at least every 2 days.
She brings you sweet treats sometimes, to make you happy while miserable and sick, but not too often, as sugar is less helpful than nutrition when fighting illness.
If you continue to refuse food she probably would let you, and since this will just make you weaker and weaker, once you're too weak or getting too close to being damaged by your illness beyond repairable stuff, she will just take your jaw in one hand and force you to drink soup until you're better enough, at which point if you refuse food still she'll just stare at you blanky until you either realise it's futile because she'll keep doing what she did, or until you make her force you again.
If you need a specific doctor she'll do anything she can to get the doctor to you legally, with lots of money or promises to get you up on the priority list, and if that doesn't work she is not opposed to using force to get the doctor to you without properly harming them.

With how dark the outside world from your grove of awakening was, when a flash of gold spilled into existence, your eyes could not help but be drawn to it. Kaeya was knelt just on this side of the bridge into Mondstadt city, one hand curled into the dirt and the other clutching at his face where gold drips spilt from him. Worry flooded you, yet hesitance overtook your desire to check on him. He had been cruel to you, was one to encourage your death. Yet you found yourself walking towards him regardless. Running. Sprinting. Falling to your knees beside him. A trail of green grass and new flowers sprouted in your wake, life seeping into the world surrounding you as you knelt to pull his hand from his face. You felt your face grow tight at the feeling of blood beneath his nails as you pried his hand away to hold it in your own.

As it touched you it seemed to seep into you, bringing warmth to your body in the chill of the night. The cold hadn’t been bothersome at all, but the warmth made you feel alive again. His molten tears began to slow, eye becoming clear once more, the stunning colour seeming to shine like the molten metal it produced.
His blue eye staring into your own brought back flashes of memories, the phantom pain of cold steel breaking flesh searing across your mind, gone as quick as it came. The warmth from the golden liquid pouring from his skin, coating your hands and staining the ground beneath you both, his breathing evening out as his eyes drift closed, the metallic flow slowing to a stop as his skin mended itself under your hands embrace. Slumping against you the knight's vision glowed softly as you let him rest against you a moment. Glancing over the city.. It was a bit pathetic, all life seemed to have drained from it, all light dampened and dimmed.
Setting Kaeya against the wall of the city you turned your back to the city of wind and walked into the forest. Running your hand along the trees, ferns, flowers and vines as you wandered. Watching as life flowed into the plants around you, creatures warily peeking out of their burrows and nests, chirping and chittering filling the air as their home was restored to liveable conditions.

The way the forests seemed forgiving to you, never a thorn to catch on your skin where you heard the knights swear where they are cut ruthlessly. How the trees seem to shield you from their gazes.
You know none of the others know of you, Mondstadt would never allow news to spread that an imposter of their so beloved creator, as you’d come to find was your crime, had made home in their city.
Yet in the final moment as darkness took over, the cold stealing you in its embrace, you could only remember the beauty, the fragility, the nuance and detail of this world.

Warmth seeps back into your bones, the urge to breathe kickstarting your awakening.
You can feel the call, beckoning you to open your eyes. So you do.
It’s dark, the grass you lay on is illuminated by the soft glowing of various bioluminescent plants, flowers and creatures as you become aware of your limbs. You take a breath, and feel.
Soft moss like fabrics drape your form in a kind of shapeless attire. Softly glowing golden vines wrap you like veins, pulsing in time with your heart. Thick tall trees grow densely around the large space, thickets of various kinds grow between the trees, who also seem of various species. There are vines and plants covering most of the groves connection to the sky, the gaps reveal the moon high and the stars bright. Critters graze and live leisurely in the space, glowing insects buzz idly through the grass. The grass seems illuminated by your feet, the glowing vines faintly lighting your surrounds.
A squirrel bounds up to you from a tree, sniffing at you curiously, before raising the acorn it holds to you. It seems to wait a moment, and when you do not take it, the squirrel lowers the acorn, presses its head against you for a few moments, seemingly happy, before hopping away. The plants are vibrant and strong as you wander through the grove. The critters appear in harmony as you wander. You grow close to the tree borders. The trees groan and creak as they bend and sway to make way for you. You step over their roots, their vines and leaves caressing you as you pass, whispering promises of safety in their borders. They whisper of home, of warmth and community. You reach the other side.
The grass is wilted and dry, the trees outside are near bear of leaves, the sky is dark with clouds, no critters nor birdsong nor plant light seems to fill the space. The cities lights are dull and flickering, clear even from your distance. The grass by your feet seems to flourish, patterns of life spilling from you like liquid into the ground. Yet like liquid it only goes so far from its origin. As you step forward, life spills further into the ground, a twittering pulls your gaze from where you came, a bird peaks from the remembers of the path in the trees that you forged, it sings anxiously, twittering notes spilling into concern for the world so different to the one it’s used to, it’s head darting back and forth as it contemplates.

Kaeya wasn’t expecting anything to change, well, didn’t expect any change other than more death, as he volunteered for the night patrol, hillichurls, abyss mages, no threats from years past had been seen since they had begun receding back from that day. He recalls it like yesterday, just as he imagines everyone else does who were there. The way the one they’d called an imposter had smiled as they took off their head, how their red blood ran gold as their head hit the grass. How each of the knights had mourned their mistake. How their eyes had closed as their skin went pale. How none of the knights could stay, how they fled to plan their graces funeral, only to return the next day to a dense thicket of twisting vines and bushes covering them, saplings of trees both known and not sprouting through the previously flat plane. Any attempt to remove the vines had been unsuccessful, only resulting in torn flesh and raging critters screeching nearby. Eventually they had just left, resigned to their failure.
Kaeya had never expected to see vibrant life again after their world began dying after their grace’s death. They knew the other nations were not fine, but nor were they dying to the extent that Mond was. Wherever mondstadtians stood death followed. In many nations this lead to mondstadtians being confined to their homes, or outcasted altogether. Though the latter mostly occurred in Sumeru, where a life killer couldn’t be risked.
So when a soft glow caught his eye off the forest edge, the forest that grew solely from their graces grave, he could not help but be amazed. When life graced his eye. He did not carry the trail of death as others did, though he felt it best to not reveal this, for this felt like what he deserved, the curse he should bear. Yet doesn’t.
He felt his eye burn, light spilling from beneath blackened fabric. His own curse begging to see the one who created it. He winced, hand coming to clench over the fabric hiding his accursed nature from the world. Tearing through it till the molten liquid could drip from his golden eye, tears burning on his skin, knees buckling as his vision grew blurry, golden liquid so painfully bright to look at yet not illuminating near anything.

You've not been eating properly for the last few days, sure, you've had some snacks here and there, either shoved into your hands or onto your desk by your coworkers, usually Lisa or Jean. In the past, they would bring you small meals, though they've particularly busy lately. With the traveller and Davalin, and the slowly encroaching hilichurl camps that you’re pretty sure you’ve heard reports of abyss mages hanging around, the knights have been busy.
It’s a breath of fresh air, literally and metaphorically, when you’re sent out of the chaotic building on a mission.
You’re with Kaeya, investigating and hopefully clearing out some camps that Albedo spotted on the outskirts of Dragonspine. It’s on the border between Liyue and Mondstadt, towards Sal Torre? Or something. You don’t remember it exactly.
You’d both arrived at the camp and it appeared almost deserted, only a single Hilichurl that either of you could see. Though, of course it’s not that simple, of course not. Why would it be? It was only Kaeyas quick warning that saved you,
“BEHIND!”
You spun, weapon raised in front of you in a practiced block as the heavy axe of a Mitachurl as it descends towards you. The impact knocks the breath from your chest and leaves you heaving. Black creeps at the edges of your vision as the world goes blurry. You body feels like lead and your head feels like it’s full of air and static. You hear the sound of a blade through ice and flesh, your eyes darting to the side. Your vision is just clear enough to piece together Kaeya dispatching the samachurl that had accompanied the brute.
A stray thought strikes you as the pressure from the Mitachurls axe dissipates while it lugs its arm backwards to prep another swing. Your arms shake as you begin to fall and the static overtakes any other sound.

Warm. Comfy. You’re laid on a soft bed with a thin blanket over you, sun shining in the window and- wait. Huh? Sun shining… through.. the window?

Your eyes crack open and you groan softly as the world takes its sweet time in swimming into focus. A voice unfamiliar to you speaks, a low baritone.
“Ah, he awakens.” A hand is pushing your hair from your face, pulling your face to face him, to face Kaeya. Kaeya looks out of sorts, nervous, or, not so much nervous, as much as he looks concerned. A furrow to his usually relaxed brows, causing a crease in his forehead. The tightness of how his lips are drawn in a thin line, gaze steely as he examines your face.
Your arms shake slightly as you push yourself to sit up, vertigo hitting like a mitachurl as you take in where you are.
You already know you’re not in your office, you chose one without windows. The wall are a wood you don’t recognise, darker than any tree in Mondstadt, and the decorations feel exotic and foreign. It’s nowhere you recognise, though you can understand you’re in some kind of infirmary. The origin of the mystery voice also becomes clear. A man with pale mint coloured hair and. A snake. On his shoulders… Is approaching you.
Regardless of his, interesting, companion choices, he simply places a bowl of soup on the bedside table and smiles at you gently, placatingly.
“Good morning, how are you feeling?”

You brush off most of the Doctor’s, who you learn is named Baizhu, questions. At some point Kaeya had moved to lean against the wall, but as you brush off yet another question he sighs and stalks over to the side of your bed.
“Reader, what in the ever loving name of Barbatos was that. Seriously, you just up and fainted in the middle of a fight.”
“Kaeya it wasn’t anything that bad, just a little tired I guess, plus, we survived didn’t we?”
“No, Reader, you don’t get to do this. You can’t just brush this off anymore. You nearly died. If I was even slightly slower, the Mitachurl would’ve had its axe through your dumbass of a skull!” He poked you in the chest with a finger accusatorially, “What is happening with you.”
Your chest feels tight and your throats seems to constrict as your mouth opens and closes, words abstained. Kaeyas eyes stay fixed on your face as he waits, fingers drumming silently on his arm as his arms lay crossed across his chest.
You glance at the doctor who has stepped back away, and is quietly conversing with his companion.
You voice feels loud in your ears, feeling like a shout as you try to whisper, try to escape your confession.
“I… don’t want you to treat me differently.”
He quirks an eyebrow, gaze softening ever so slightly as something in him appears to shift, intrigue sparked in his eyes,
“Now why would I ever think of you differently Reader? Even if you have some incurable disease or something, you’re still the same insufferable you as you’ve always been.”
You hum softly as you try to swallow the lump in your throat, it stings but you force the words out,
“I’m just. I’m a little broken okay? My body decided to fuck up its own chemistry at conception and give me anemia. So there, now you know I’m defective. Happy?”
Keynes blinks, blinks again and then groans, hands coming up to bury his face.
“Oh my Barbatos how am I so blind.” He looks up from between his fingers, “Oh my gosh that makes so much make sense. How did I never see? I literally- augh. Also-“ he looks up at you probably, eyebrows drawn together and a frown marring his features. “Would you call Diluc defective?” Your eyes widen as you shake your hands widely in front of you,
“No I would never Kaeya! Why would you say that?”
He smirks and boops your nose,
“Then why do you call yourself defective silly? Yanno Diluc’s anemic too? He just remembers to eat enough to compensate, which- did.” His smile drops and he looks concerned again, “hav r you been not? I know a lot of food in Mond is quite friendly to anemia, so unless you haven’t been eating Reader this shouldn’t have been an issue.”

-> You'd probably be sitting on the floor with your back to your shared bed, probably either just having stopped crying or still crying because you feel guilty for relapsing, as well as from whatever pushed you into relapsing.
-> When he walks in and finds you like this he has to take a moment to pause, and blink as he takes in the scene before him.
-> If you appear in danger
-> he'll just pick you up, put you on the bed and figure out either how to apply what medicinal knowledge he has (near nothing), then he'll then rush to grab a doctor, he will legit just; briefly explain, make the doctor get what they need to help you and then sprint back to you (carrying the doctor) to make sure you are safe.
-> In that senario, he will stay towards the wall of the room while the doctor checks you, frowning sadly and thinking about how he can do better to make sure this doesn't happen again.

Preamble - I actually have a pretty bad iron deficiency and have to take supplements to prevent these exact issues, so I’m writing this with the symptoms that I know of, but lemme know if there’s anything I could add in any future posts like this!! With qpr’s, I write them like being friends who are closer than being friends, using pet names, being more affectionate in peoples respective ways, whether teasing, or hugs or gifts or such, but no romance, and no romantic relationship type gesture, like kisses, love confessions, there’s no emotion of romantic love. More like a familial love almost.
It was a late night in the tavern when you started to feel lightheaded, spots of black starting to dance in your vision. Squinting, you take a moment, and slowly your vision clears enough for you to realise Kaeya, who is quite tipsy, is eyeing your mostly untouched glass of dandelion wine.
Huffing out a laugh, you slide the glass over to him with a smile. His smirk grows and his eyes find yours, amusement dancing through them with an undertone of admiration? Awe? … appreciation, something like that. The dark spots have returned with the movement of sliding your glass across the table, so it’s hard to tell.
“Not to your liking my dear? Or have you finally recognised how amazing I am and decided to bless me with a gift?” You shake your head as he sips the wine, humming appreciatively.
“I simply just realised that if I allow myself to get tipsy it’ll be even more impossible for me to get you out before Master Diluc decides burning the place down would be easier.” Kaeya chuckles and his eye(s?) narrow at you, scrutinising you. You hold his gaze, challenging him to find something, anything. Or you think you do anyway, everything’s a little blurry, though the spots of darkness are gone now, so that’s good.
Eventually, the chatter from downstairs has faded into nothing as the last patrons begin leaving, quiet interrupted by a call from Diluc, telling them it’s time to leave for the night. Kaeya groans quietly as his head flops onto his folded arms.
You smile at his antics and stand, swaying for a moment as the world goes black for a moment before your eyesight flickers back and a small headache starts to build in your skull. You stumble, catching yourself on the edge of the table. By the time Kaeya is tilting his head to peek at you, you’ve recovered and are holding out a hand to pull him up.
It’s not often Kaeya gets drunk enough to actually need help, but you’ll always offer regardless.
Kaeya is rushing through the crowded streets, hand holding yours as he makes his way towards the gates. Black patches goat over your vision, steps fumbling and body hunched forwards as he drags you along. As people bump into you, apologises are muttered but sound is all blending together like a soup. A subtle ringing undertone sounds in the jumble of noises.
He stops so abruptly you nearly run into him, confusion from the darkness and cotton in your brain disguised in a question of why he stopped. He laughs, smiles and gestures around, your eyes dart around, eyes aching as the bright sky and pale stone of Mondstadts gates greet you. He tugs you forward to start moving again, his words finally registering as the quiet of the country roads allows his line words to ring clear.
“Now that we’ve escaped the dreadfully crowded streets it is more fitting to take pause and then resume our journey at a more leisurely pace is it not?”
A genuine smile and a quick nod is all you give before you’re walking beside Kaeya once more.
Is it your imagination or is that ringing from earlier returning?
“So, my dear, I believe you mentioned some business in Liyue recently, how has that been going?” You’ve known Kaeya for years, and it’s easy to tell he’s just fishing for information on Liyuean affairs, and any gossip. Or well, it’s usually easy. Your headache from the earlier rushing in the crowded streets has come back with a vengeance and built into a burning migraine.
Kaeya is looking at you a tad funny. (You’re starting to grow pale and you’re also swaying a little.)
There’s a faint ringing in your ears as black seeps on from the edges of your vision. Not like the spots that usually just dance across your sight.
“Oh. Hey Kaeya?”
He raises an eyebrow in question,
“Yes my dear?”
“Don’t freak out, and I’m sorry.” His mouth opens as if to speak, but words fail him as you fall flat forwards. Eyes fluttering closed as your knees give out and your body goes limp.
It happens so fast he can nearly even react in time to stick a leg out to catch you chest, holding your body up to keep your face from smashing into the hard ground. Gently, he lets you down before he bends down and rolls you onto your back.
As he finishes bringing you to face him, you eyes open, gaze distant and unfocused for a second before you squeeze your eyes shut. You briefly hold them closed as your migraine protest the thought of opening then again. Alas you do so anyways, and force a smile at your dearest companion.
“Hi there. I’m back now, we should get going again.” He looks like he wants to fight you on it for a moment before his face falls into consideration, helping you up.
You both walk in comforting silence before a mundane conversation restarts, though it’s not long before he’s trying his luck,
“Indeed, though I do wonder if you ought to visit the pharmacy yourself, surely this Doctor Baizhu would have something to say about you no?” You raise an eyebrow at his and snort,
“Whatever for Kaeya? I’m perfectly healthy, there’s no reason for Mr. Baizhu to say anything to me other than a price tag for whatever my clients get me to buy.” He seems, dissatisfied with your answer, though he hides it incredibly, and you’re sure only you and Master Diluc, and perhaps Miss. Adeline, would ever be able to read it.
He’ll continue to try and question you on what happened, even outright just asking at one point, not even trying to keep being subtle.
Eventually you’ll reach wherever you were travelling to, or finish your patrol, and because of your withholding of information, or lack thereof?, he allows the conversation to flow to another topic. He’l figure you out one day, he swears.
…
Just not today it seems.
When Diluc walks out of the back break room of Angles Share to see you completely knocked out the bar, head laid on your arms as Kaeya stares at you, he knows he’s gonna get a headache. One way or another.
He’s only proven right when he raises an eyebrow at Kaeya and glances at you, your untouched glass of wine, and then back to Kaeya, who’s brows are lightly furrowed, hand holding his lower face.
… “Did someone kill him while I was gone?”
It at least draws Kaeyas eye to Diluc for a moment before it’s sliding back to watch you.
“No.. They just mumbled something before they laid down and,” his hand mimes something falling down, as he makes a popping sound with his lips. Diluc hums.

You’re long Horne used to how they gather information, bd are all but immune it to now, unless a major migraine is gripping you. Then playing their mindgames is much too complex despite your wishes to do so.
-> Man’s is definitely internally freaking out when you just collapse on him. Very very concerned even though you seemed to- know what was happening??? Which honestly confused him further.
-> He completely internally is screaming and trying to figure out what the hell just happened.
-> He eventually will come to the conclusion you have some kind of underlying health issue you either don’t know much about or don’t like falling about, so he’ll leave it be.
-> knight’s training? Why should he go to those boring sessions when he can train his reaction time and observation skills by making sure you don’t fucking face plant.
-> Tries to figure out desperately how to help your condition. He is unsuccessful.
-> Can and will take vacation time off to follow you to Bubu Pharmacy so he can talk to Doctor Baizhu about you and try to help.
-> He will never tell you about this and if you ask he will deny it.
“Then why were you there?”
“I was just checking out the sorts of people my close companion is working with and ensuring they may have no I’ll intent toward you.”
-> Fuckin smooth talker, you may know how to avoid his info fishing because of how long you’ve known him, but the thing is that goes both ways.
-> Can and will talk circles around you about your symptoms trying to get you to slip up and reveal what’s wrong, never works because you know Kaeya.
-> Will also do this with you asking him about why he’s being weird, because whatever do you mean? He’s simply ensuring a friends safety, that’s perfectly normal for a knight.
-> If you point out that he’s not like most knights he’ll just laugh, spin it as some sort of compliment and thank you.
-> Tries to recruit Diluc to dig around with his network and figure what’s wrong with you, Diluc won’t agree to, mostly because you are allowed privacy but also it’s Kaeya.
-> He generally doesn’t bring it up, but everytime something is off, or after something happens he’ll start getting curious all over again.
-> Whenever you start becoming less responsive because of migraine or lightheadedness or both, he gets concerned all over again. What’s wrong with you that it can impair your hearing and thought process? Are you alright? Why won’t you tell him what’s wrong? Do you not trust him? Are you dying?
-> It takes quite a long while (at least a year) before he asks if you’re afflicted with some rare, deadly ailment. He asks it so seriously, because being anaemic isn’t really common enough for anyone in Mondstadt to know about it.
-> If you assure him you aren’t dying he’ll still keep an eye on you but he’s noticeably less tense than in the weeks leading up to him asking you that question.

Preamble - I’m not personally narcoleptic, but I do struggle with constant drowsiness/sleepiness and I have a complicated relationship with sleep.
Collei (With Eleazar)
-> At first she's really panicked, thinking somethings wrong, since lots of things can go wrong in the work of a forest ranger, so she awkwardly moves you so she can carry you and gets you back to Ghandarva Ville, and gets Tighnari to check over you.
-> relived when there's nothing wrong, then confused. Won't ask you what happened when you wake up, but she'll give you confused glances and looks.
-> When you explain she is listening really intently, and asks loads of questions so she can better understand your condition.
-> If you fall asleep inside, she'll drape a blanket over you and turn off the lights, close doors and windows.
-> If you fall asleep around her outside, she'll make sure you don't fall in a way that could cause you an injury, if you're close enough to home, she'll carry you. If you're too far away for her to carry, she'll drape any cape or such she has on hand over you and keep watch until you awaken, or make camp around you.
-> If you fall asleep in a really unsafe area she'll carry you out of the danger zone and then some before setting up camp.
-> If she fails to catch you or stop you from getting injured when you fall, she'll get upset with herself for not being fast enough, and pushes herself to either treat you if she can, or carry you to Tighnari so he can treat you, even if it's much too far away for her to carry without risking her health worsening.
-> Tells people to mind their business when they're being nosy. "Why is it any of your business why they're so tired? I don't believe you're anyone important to them."
Diluc
-> Concerned you aren't sleeping well and asks if there's anything wrong with your room or bed.
-> When you reveal why you fall asleep, he nods and thanks you for telling him. He doesn't bring it up after that.
-> You notice the chairs in the winery and the benches around the winery are no longer solid wood but have pillows or padding. There are also more, thicker, rugs around common areas, or areas you specifically frequent.
-> If you fall asleep at your desk, he'll either drape his coat or a nearby blanket over you.
-> He discreetly informs Adelinde to look out for you. If you fall asleep around the winerys property while Diluc is away/out, Adelinde will bring you inside if you're outside, and will place you on a couch, or in your room.
-> If you fall asleep while in Mondstadt city with him around, he'll pick you up and carry you to his Tavern, and he'll lay you on the couches/booth seats upstairs and close off the upper layer to guests for the night, there's enough space downstairs anyways.
-> Always offers you some water when you wake up and wander downstairs in the tavern.
-> If you fall asleep on paperwork or a book, he'll carefully move you from it, sure to not disturb anything or make a mess, and he'll slip a bookmark to where you are in the book, before moving you to bed.
-> If you fall asleep against him he'll carefully and gently move to pick you up and carry you to your bed and tuck you in. (May or may not stand and admire you for a moment after doing so as he brushes hair from your face / behind your ear. )
-> Doesn't let people ask questions if they see you sleeping, either ignores them or forces a different topic of conversation.

"Oh- I ah- Just waiting for payday."
Kaeya
-> If you first fall asleep around him in public he'll play it off as either you having drank too much, or not having slept enough, as he slings you into his arms and takes you to the knights headquarters to lay you down in his office.
-> If you first fall asleep around him in private, he'll simply watch you until you awaken, before asking in the not-a-question-but-you-know-I'm-asking way of his. "Oh? Sleeping beauty is finally awake. I was worried perhaps you'd simply dropped dead from being in my glorious presence for too long."
-> Once he knows what is happening with you, he'll put a lot of effort into observing you and figuring out any tells or signs you display before you fall asleep, so that whenever you display them he can corral you away from any crowds or nosy people, into a safe and private environment.
-> If you fall asleep against him, he'll move your head to his lap so your neck doesn't get sore.
-> He'll drape his fur cape over your shoulders if you fall asleep at your desk / at a table.
-> Helps you catch up with work if you fall behind due to your narcolepsy.
-> If you try to repay him for his help, "Oh don't worry about it, but if you are going to be so insistent, then why not join me for a drink at Angels Share tonight as repayment?"
-> If you fall asleep while on a field mission with Kaeya, his response depends on how time sensitive the mission is. If it's something that he can pause, he'll set up a small camp around you, and make sure you're safe. If it's something he can't pause, he'll either drop you off to any nearby place that's safe that he can, or he'll send a missive to Diluc with your location and some brief details. (He may not be that close with Diluc, but he knows he can trust him at the least to send someone. This is based on Dilucs idle where he receives a scroll.)
-> If anyone asks about why you sleep so much (nosy much?) He'll explain it as you working so hard. "Oh? Why do they sleep so much? Well, they simply work so hard day and night that they must rest whenever the chance arise. Truly, a most diligent worker."
Itto
-> Confused but he won't ask, just picks you up like a sack of potatos and continue whatever you two were doing until you awaken, he'll catch you up on his progress.
-> He hums when you're asleep to amuse himself, and it becomes a calming thing to you, since you know when you wake up and hear him that you're safe.
-> If he learns this, he'll smile real big "Well, I'm glad you know you're safe with me compadre! I am Arataki 'best guard and buddy' Itto after all!"
-> He doesn't need an explanation for your condition, he just accepts it regardless, but if you do explain he'll nod and hum and just accept it and move on. He doesn't care, you're his compadre! He's pretty unique himself, and he's had a fair share of friends with unique issues.
-> Whenever you fall asleep he'll try remember what you two were talking about before, so he can pick up the conversation after you wake up, though most of the time he forgets, so you just start talking about something new.
-> If you fall asleep against him it's 50/50 whether he'll just pull you into his lap with your head against his chest, rest his head on yours and hum a soft tune, or if you'll wake up with silly drawing on your face (easy to get off, he's not mean.) and placed against a tree, Itto hanging out nearby with the gang members.
-> Itto does it in fun, it's never rude or demeaning drawings, maybe a silly mustache and monocle, or some shapes, hearts/stars/spirals.
-> Kuki is the one to tell you if you don't see your reflection first, she'll also help you get it off with some gentle scrubbing.
-> If you fall asleep during an onikabuto fight, "Oh yeah, my beetle tooooootally won!.. What do you mean Kuki told you otherwise?... Ah, hahah, you- passed the test! Yes! For I was testing you."
"What was I testing you for? Well- ah- look! fresh lavender melons! Gotta eat them while their the most ripe!"
-> When people ask about the sleeping person he's carrying, "Oh! This is my compadre! They're just a little sleepy." He then moves on and refuses to elaborate at all, sometimes it causes people to think he's kidnapping you, but a quick chat to anyone who knows you both, or you yourself, clears up any confusion.

I’ve fallen asleep in class and it’s not romantic like the books make it seem, it’s legit a nightmare at least for me, since I have anxiety and I tend to sit towards the front of my classrooms due to sight and hearing issues.
Yanfei
-> At first is worried you aren’t sleeping enough, once you explain she acknowledges that she understands and asks how to help/make you the most comfortable she can, without being overbearing.
-> She always makes sure to keep an eye out for if you start to sway or appear disoriented, or show any signs of an oncoming sleep.
-> If you begin to fall she’ll do her best to catch you and move you to a safe location or somewhere out of the more public eye.
-> Always carries a small pillow with her so if you fall asleep on a desk or with you head generally lying on a hard surface, she’ll place it beneath your head.
-> Will let you rest your head in her lap if you know an episode is oncoming and you’re comfortable with it.
-> Will redirect conversation if people bring it up and you get uncomfortable. Always does so flawlessly and without the other party realising.
-> If you say it’s alright she will quietly, discreetly and concisely explain your condition to your friends when/if they see an episode and get concerned.
-> If you’re not alright with others knowing she will brush it off as you not getting enough sleep or something similarly mundane before changing the topic.
Zhongli
-> Probably has encountered similar conditions before. If he hasn’t he will be concerned but simply watch over you until you awaken. Will not push for an explanation, let’s you explain on your own term as whenever you choose to do so.
-> Catches you if you fall and always makes sure you don’t get hurt and stay safe.
-> If you’re okay with it, when you’re going somewhere with him if an episode comes on he’ll gently pick you up in a Princess carry and take you to where ever you were going.
-> If you fall asleep against him he won’t move you off him and he will stay perfectly still or adjust slightly so that your neck won’t hurt later.
-> Is never disturbed and if you fall asleep while he’s talking, as soon as he notices he’ll stop talking and simply pick up from a little before you fell unconscious once you’re back awake.
-> Often makes tea if he can while you’re asleep because he knows people often are thirsty after daytime sleep, or just any sleep outside of regular resting at night.
-> Makes sure to remember your preferences for these types of tea.
-> If it’s cold he will drape his coat over you though this isn’t really exclusive to when you’re asleep.
