He procrastinates much of his work til its deadline, so if a flare hits at an inopportune time, he's stuck working through it. This often leaves him knocked on his back, the effects much worse than if he had simply rest

His deadlines don't allow for rest days, and especially not for rests that come from disability. Hes not supposed to look 'weak'. Hes associated strength with pushing through. The internalized ableism runs deep with this one

If anyone points out his symptoms, he'll insist he's fine. If they're pathogenic, he'll tell them to get away instead, saying that he doesn't want to get them ill.

He views illness as a personal weakness. He thinks if he was just better, he wouldn't ever feel that way.

He has many contraptions to help with illness. He refuses to use a single one on himself. He is stubborn to a fault, and thinks he should be 'better than that'.

CHAPTER 93 SPOILERS

Sick Qifrey

Olruggio models most of his contraptions after Qifrey's symptoms. He spends a lot of time observing the man— it is technically his job, after all.

Qifrey has never used a single one. They are too kind, too tailor made. Too sure to lull him into safety. Exactly what they were made to do. He feels imense guilt over this– every trinket is placed around his room as if it is used.

Olruggio thinks he just needs to be better. He always does. Qifrey wishes he could tell him the truth. 20 years of perfectly tailored gifts, and he can't use a single one.

Sick Olruggio

Trying to get Olruggio to rest when he has a deadline is just about impossible. So Qifrey will stick to what is in his hands— he'll bring Olly a warm meal, and tuck him in with a blanket when he falls asleep at his desk.

Qifrey will brew tea as well. He has quite the collection of different ingredients, and likes to make his own blends. It's difficult to take note of what Olruggio thinks of each; his reaction tends to lack both emotion and expression.

But with twenty years of thiss under his belt, Qifrey has Olly's favorite tea down to a a science. Olruggio himself doesn't even know what the tea includes, and he sure as hell is not going to ask.

Perhaps in another life, Olly would drape heated bands over Qifrey's aching joints. He'd lay him to rest on the couch, when he could still be near his apprentices.

Perhaps in that life, Qifrey would put use to each of Olly's contraptions. His fingers adorned with rings, each a symbol of Olruggio's unspoken care.

Perhaps, Olruggio would allow himself to be pulled away from his work. He'd lie on Qifrey's bed, complaining, and allow the other man to comb his fingers through his coarse hair.

It would still be uncomfortable for him at first— the vulnerability of the situation. He'd feel weak, feel wrong. But the safety would calm eventually; the oh-so-tired haze combined with the comforting scent of his best friend lulling him to sleep.

Qifrey would lay against Olruggio, adoring the moments where he let his guard down like this. He'd want to stay up just a little longer to enjoy the moment, but the softness of the moment would quickly bring sleep.

Olly would wake up first, feeling just a bit better with the rays of the sun, now held within Qifrey's embrace. He'd grumble about it, but no true anger would be held. He'd close his eyes once again, and allow himself to enjoy the embrace.
