katniss when peeta stops giving her kisses to focus on training:

like, when katniss first joins in on the real or not real game, she talks about how excruciating it is for her (mj, 232). and how they keep the conversation on very surface level topics. like the color of her dresses on the victory tour (mj, 232). or the name of their math teacher (mj, 232).

but maybe, as everlark grows back together, they start asking more and more intimate questions. the kind that can only be said in a whisper.

like katniss whispering from the warmth of peeta's arm, 'you think i am pretty, real or not real.' and peeta reaching through his memories to find the perfect response, ' you are the only beautiful thing that could possibly be a weakness for me'

or peeta having to look down at the dinner table as he questions if, 'you liked kissing me, real or not real'. and katniss, gently lifting his chin up, looks him in the eyes and confirms 'very much so' before kissing him until he smiles again.

I know his family didn't live with him, I know he had a bad relationship with his mom and his relationship with the rest of his family is a mystery, but that doesn't mean his house doesn't have ghosts. We don't know exactly what happened there besides the fact that he lived alone. His brothers could have come by to cheer him up, bringing cards to play poker and slap jack. He and his dad could have worked on new baking recipes in his kitchen. And look, even abusive parents aren't always terrible, and maybe his mom was trying to repair their relationship when he got back. We just don't know! And even if no one ever stepped a foot in his house the whole time, that is a whole other ghost--a feeling that he was never home, a house of his nightmares and pain and loneliness following returning from the Games.

Peeta’s house may be a preferable option for a few reasons (disability aids for his prosthetic leg, we don’t know for sure what his trauma with his house would be and therefore it’s easier to headcanon the issues away than it is with Katniss’ house, etc.). But then the reasons @thesweetnessofspring mentioned.

And I agree with the idea that Katniss’ house would have too many associations with her sister. But then I sometimes go the other direction and say maybe Katniss wanted to stay in her house because it was the last place she shared with Prim and because she wanted the memories of Prim close instead of shying away from them. Peeta planting the primrose bushes in her yard also make me feel like that’s another tie to that house.

And then the cabin in the woods option which tbh I’m not a fan of if I’m being totally honest. Not as a full time house. As a small get away from time to time, sure, but tbh??? It’s very isolating. As much as they love each other they probably need a community outside of the other one and the idea of them living away from civilization can sort of feel lonely. Plus there’s Haymitch to consider. And if Peeta wants to open/work at the bakery (or if Katniss ever wants to get a job or volunteer anywhere) it feels even more complex. But I see why the idea makes sense. Katniss loves the woods and it’s far away from the bad memories.

and do you ever think about how katniss justifies her resolve to sacrifice herself for peeta saying that she needs him to live (cf, 100). because she would be broken beyond repair if he died (cf, 100).

and that she frequently explains that her life would be unliveable if he died (thg, 343; cf, 34). and how she lost the will to live when he was captured (cf, 110). and how she decided that life was no longer worth living when he came back hijacked (mj, 171).
