what if you were the best player in the league and you scored the golden goal for team canada and had a stanley cup and multiple awards under your belt and what if you were beat down by injuries and in a tough place and what if you agreed to train with this kid from your hometown who idolizes you and you don’t know what to expect and what if he looks at you with stars in his eyes but when you pull him down by the ankle and he faceplants into the sand and he laughs (and now recounts that story with such fondness and mirth), you realize he sees you and he likes you, the you not many get to see and what if you realize he’s as insane and passionate as you are and what if the comparisons to you loom over his career but he never resents you for it and what if you ask your former teammate to look out for him because you want his experience in the league to be better than yours was and what if said teammate felt like he already knew him by the time they met because of how much you talked about him and what if you let him build a house right next to yours and rezoned your property because being attached at the hip is your idea of the best time and what if he makes you laugh like no other and what if over the years, his love for you has never faded, but grown into something steady and well-worn and what if he’s your best friend and your favorite person and what if you love him back.
