“Yumejoshi,” “yumeship,” “selfship…” What is it really? Is it interchangeable? I thought to make this post for people who really may not know, who want to know more or may be confused, and etc! **Please correct me if i happen to gotten any information wrong**
Now the term selfship is honestly so straight forward! You ship yourself, oc, self insert with a character.
With “yumeship” it does follows the same concept but a big thing to being a yumejoshi/danshi/jin/bito is writing and/or reading to immerse and imagine yourself(or an oc) into a fictional world, Since it originated from japanese dream novels, “夢小説.” (yume shousetsu) where an author would create a world where themselves and readers can easily put themselves into the story as a protagonist and/or love interest!(websites now even have a name changing function!) Though in the past decade or so there has been a rise in writing and dreaming yourself with a fictional character from anime, manga, video games, etc. These are called “derivative works”
Sources + Further information and details:
Heres a tumblr post that is honestly a good read about said terms and tbh helps with self reflections on what label really fits.
Heres some articles explaining what it is to be a yumejoshi and definitions of common terms.
article 1: medium deep rundown
article 2: simple run down, basic information but relatively thorough
article 3: another simple rundown, has 12 “major” actions/feelings/relatablilty of yumejoshis.(it lowkey kinda acts like a put a finger down type list too)
article 4: pixiv dictionary, very similar to the article above, definitions but also where people can post their dream novels!
yumejoshi guide: i had added this on a recent post…but this is a tweet with a doodles + word guide, which i feel can be a bit easier to follow/understand! again its nothing too different from the articles about its more about how its written out.
Please always go and do your own further research! This is just a small bit of what I found for now and wanted to share as a base(hopefully) for others to see. Because its one thing to really just not know, and its another to know and act like you don’t or just don't care.
moving forward im personally no longer gonna use the term “yumeship” based off of my own research and taking a bunch of discussions into much consideration. Im not gonna bash nor be anti of anyone who uses it moving forward, but I do believe its important to know, try to understand and to use terms properly.
and i’ll admit i did just jump into the community a bit over a few months ago(tho self shipping was something i had been casually doing for years i just didn’t know there was an online space for it lol) Anyways thats on me on for blindy using a label at first.
*p.s sorry if i worded this weird i wrote this up when i should be sleep lol
