Sickle Cell Disease Virtual Conference: Treating the Whole Person Apr 14, 2021 This sickle cell disease (SCD) conference provides the perfect opportunity for nurses, advanced practice practitioners, and other healthcare professionals as well as SCD consumers and advocates to keep up to date on the latest research and best practices for sickle cell disease. There will be plenty of panels, audience interaction, and information that is pertinent to SCD practitioners, especially nurses, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants. The conference will cover topics that are relevant and will discuss real world experiences with concrete examples and scenarios.  It will also tackle hard questions such as health disparities, having difficult conversations, and how to manage cumulative grief.   This activity, Sickle Cell Disease: Treating the Whole Person (2020-0000000219), has been approved for 6.75 contact hours by the Ohio Nurses Association. Sometimes we need to look back in order to see how far we have come. The TCD scan can identify children with SCD who are at high risk for stroke by highlighting abnormally high blood flow velocity. Since our last post on this we have heard from many adult patients that didn’t have this done when they were growing up. This is vital in preventing stroke in young children which is highest during the ages of 2 and 5. Let’s work to ensure progress in new technologies to combat the associated risks for sickle cell patients continues.
