Avascular necrosis (AVN), in individuals with sickle cell disease, results from the temporary or permanent loss of blood supply to the bone in the hip or shoulder joint. This loss of blood causes narrowing of the joint and collapse of the bone. The cold weather months have arrived and many #SickleCell #warrior families in colder climates begin to think about moving someplace warmer for the sake of their or their child's health. Being in Minnesota, we definitely understand this challenge. If you choose to move to a warmer climate, please be sure that wherever you may choose to go has adequate knowledge of sickle cell disease and compassionate medical providers in the clinics, hospitals and the EDs. It probably won't be perfect, but it shouldn't be sub standard care either.
