Nine rings were made for men. Seven for the dwarves, three for the elves, and one for the big guy himself. One, three, seven, nine. There is but a set of five missing to complete the sequence of odd numbers. I propose that this missing set of rings of power was gifted to a mysterious someone by their true love, along with a partridge in a pear tree (among other things). In this essay I will-
I love Ninth House (Leigh Bardugo), so when my Boston accommodation fell through at the last minute I booked a room in New Haven and took pictures of every significant secret society house mentioned in the book, plus some bonus locations. Enjoy!
Starting off strong with St Elmo (how far they've fallen):
Then we have Manuscript! Took me embarrassingly long to find, peep the circle of bricks on the wall:
Then Wolf's Head (which I think was Leigh's society if memory serves?), very walled and difficult to photograph:
Now Skull and Bones:
Next up we have Book and Snake (opposite the graveyard which features a lot in the book too), with some fence detail. Hopefully the cars give an idea of scale but my GOD some of these buildings are massive, and there's no sign of any windows or even ventilation except that front door. But yeah Book and Snake:
And now we have Scroll and Key, also massive and mausoleum-like:
Last of the main ones, here's Berzelius:
And now a little bonus, Rosenfeld Hall (which used to be St Elmo):
And also the Hutch! I think it's the top single attic window:
FAQs
Could you have found out what these looked like online? Yes!
Did you know that before you did this? No! I didn't think it through I just got excited!
How did you navigate New Haven? Using only the map in the front of the book for some godforsaken reason. It worked though.
Do you have more pictures? Yes! Of the graveyard and of the Sterling Library, with as many parts of the Gauntlet as I could remember, plus some other cool buildings.
my favorite part about this show is that he’s somehow a trauma surgeon but he’s literally never at work

The post WaT herald therapy sessions are going to be so wild from Kaladin's POV.
Like first we have Chana, who is going to end up sobbing admitting that she selfishly tried to kill her daughter and set her up as replacement for herself. Then Kaladin is going to learn that said daughter is Shallan. HIS Shallan.
Then he's gonna be helping out Battar and she's gonna mention spiking some guy for Odium and it's gonna turn out to be Moash, who Kaladin last saw when he murdered Teft.
Then while talking to Nale they are gonna circle back to the Davar family and talk about Helaran being sent to kill Amaram to THEN have Kalak jump in and mention that he told Amaram to enslave the soldier who killed Helaran so Amaram could take the shards. Said soldier being KALADIN HIMSELF.
Like, our boy is going to discover that a bunch of his life's messes are due to the meddling of his new immortal coworkers.
if they had sold visiting Urithiru as a relaxing vacation oathbringer would be half the length
It's alright Dalinar, babe, he got this. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- image description: A loosely scribbled and coloured comic page with several panels in four rows of the scene in Words of Radiance in which Kaladin joins the duel in the arena. The background in the panels is painetd very patchily implying the seats of the arena with half roofs offering shadow from the sun above. The first row has two panels, on the left we see an agitaed Dalinar, in his blue uniform with gold and white trimmings, as he leans forward, hands on the wall of the dueling pit in front of him, calling out "What happened to us?", "Where is our honor?". A smaller speechbubble to the side contains the words "Honor is dead". The panel to the right depicts Dalinar looking to the side to see who gave that cynical commentary. Kaladin stands there not far behind him, also in captain's uniform holding his spear and looking very grim. The next row has two smaller and on medium sized panel, they all show Kaladin from the side in profile – as Dalinar would see him. He inhales like he is fortifying himself for what comes next. On the exhale he looks down into the arena with mix of resignation and determination and utters the words "But I'll see what I can do." The speechbubble for it is already in the next panel, in which Kaladin is gazing towards us with a mournful expression as he says "If this goes poorly, take care of my men."
The third and fourth row are both each one long horizontal panel. The third row shows Kaladin as he vaults himself over the wall in the foreground. Dalinar stares at him seeming very shocked. The panel in the last row is a top down view into the arena. Kaladin stands in front of six people, four of them Shardbearers in full plate all now turning towards him. On the far left is Relis in his black plate holding a big shardblade. Adolin kneels next to him in the sand of the arena holding his broken shoulder. To his right stand Elis with a shardhammer in a grey plate, then Adrobar in a orange one with a blade. Further to the right is Jakamav in his green plate and the king's blade, Renarin standing blade- and plateless next to him.

so another thing that would’ve been great to include for the show was the horse jokes, like I get why they’re not there, Guildford hating it and all but in the book he actually enjoys being a horse when he is one just doesn’t like that he can’t control it and others feelings about it etc. and the banter between him and Jane is so hilarious…for example:
“I believe this is an opportune time to set some ground rules for this marriage.”
“Like what? Hay preferences.”
—-
“I would never chew on your books.”
“You ate my bridal bouquet.”
He looked suprised as though he’d forgotten. Then he nodded. “So I did. Continue.”
—-
“Are you sure your true Ethian form isn’t a jackass?”
“Very funny, my lady. And that reminds me” - he pointed a finger at her - “no horse jokes.”
He was making it too easy. “Ah, my lord, why the long face.”
—-
“No horse jokes,” he said.
“My lord, I apologize for the horse joke. If you put down the book - unharmed! - I will give you a carrot.”
He brandished the book at her. “Was that a horse joke?”
“Neigh.”
“Was that a horse joke?”
—-
This is all in the span of a couple pages. These two could’ve so pulled those jokes off and it would’ve been a riot 😂

the best part of my lady jane is after they fuck for the first time and she in the daylight softly looks over and he is. a fucking horse. passed out on the floor. it's just a motherfucking horse on the ground. and the narrator is like "it's so magical to see someone you love as they truly are 😊" yeah that man she just fucked truly is a horse. amen, show of the summer.
Barroness Orczy writing a normal sentence about Sir Percy: How can I work in the fact that he is handsome?
‘Yes’ said Sir Percy very long-limbedly.
Orczy: Perfect. Very subtle.

Pattern, Moash, Adolin, Syl, Rock, Gaz
Hoid, Lopen, Eshonai, Navani, Zahel

Ben McSweeney: Pretty excellent, I like a lot of these!
The artist is from the Phillipines, and they do superb animation work as well. I think they're tied up in videogames, working on JRPGs.
Actually the worst thing in the world is alphabetical lists that put titles begining with "The" under the "T" section

the way Wit's giving everyone therapy call that sigmund heud
Stupid is timeless.
I’m that lady who’s just FEELING it
tbh cables were like that and safety precautions weren’t hard set in yet
Oh wow this is horrifying
Holy shit
Why don’t we see this kind of stuff more in history books?! I’d be way more interested in history if I understood that people were afraid of electricity because they were afraid of power lines slicing them to peices like cheese-wire! History books make it sound like “oh those silly people thought electricity carried demons or something!” Rather than “those poor people opposed electricity because they were terrified that eventually there would be so many power lines they wouldn’t be able to see the sun anymore.”
Forbidden Zipline
Me, reading about people fearing electricity when it was invented: well, people always fear changes and the new, so-
*further reads about the madness that was the massive powerlines and its horrifying lack of safety”
-you know what. I would do the exact same: be terrified of the “giant electricity spider”.
