Currently stuck on Slough House

I love that it would be easy to typify Catherine as Team Mum ‘just because’. But you’ve got a woman whose blind devotion to Charles stems at least in part because he was using her kind to her in her lowest moment and she wanted to pay him back. Whose voice still rings with pain when she talks about the broken family she tried to help (they were damaged. and I helped). Who doesn’t convey mumsiness in the way that Moira did (tsking over Jackson’s appalling office, telling Shirley and Marcus off for getting the floor wet), but also can’t be gotten rid of when one of the team is genuinely at the bottom of the pit even when it puts her in danger.

So I just rewatched the scene where River threatens Spider for the photograph of Taverner and Black in s1 and it's kinda interesting actually how like, Spider is obviously uncomfortable (he's being knocked about and has a gun held to his head) but he also never really feels like he feels he's threatened at any point? He's being like "nope" and it doesn't feel like false bravado. It's just like. He believes River will knock him about (he's doing it) but he doesn't believe River would shoot him.
