This is just a thought I had about Yosuke vs Kihachi and the whole concept around âsparks.â When theyâre at the worldâs fair in the beginning and Seiroku leaves his brother, he tells him itâll give him the opportunity to not be such a scaredy-cat. Kihachi is seen to clearly rely on his brother for protection but he also just doesnât like the dark or anything where heâs alone. Then we see how Seiroku interacts with his friends. He encourages them in the same way. He tells Yousuke not to worry and is clearly the confident one who takes the lead in ideas and creating that âsparkâ of creativity. When the lights come on, thatâs when we start to see the diverging paths between Yosuke and Kihachi take shape.
Just as the electric lights burst to life, Kihaci is seen huddled up, scared of all the unfamiliar noise and darkness, alone without his brother. But when they come on, his face brightens and his mind comes alive with ideas and possibility. This shows the âsparkâ that is ignited in him by his brother and the possibilities of electricity. It doesnât dim after this but only grows brighter as he spreads it to others like Inako. He also gains confidence and his fear fades in the presence of this light, this spark that helps him not be discouraged.
For Yosuke, on the other hand, something much different seems to happen. When the lights come on at first, itâs like heâs in awe. But not of them, of Seiroku. Unlike Kihachi, he doesnât get any creativity in and of himself but he sees now that Seiroku has the capability to go on to make this world possible. But, as the policemen descend, Seiroku darts towards his brother and doesnât spare a glance back for his friends. Yosuke is literally and figuratively thrown off balance by his absence. He begins to fall and as he does we see his hand extend towards this one bulb and as his fingers are extended towards it, the bulb flickers out. To me this represents his âsparkâ flickering out.
The contrast between Kihachi and Yosuke is here. Where Kihachi saw electricity and was filled with creativity for the possibilities in the thing itself, Yosuke only saw someone else with the creativity and ability to make anything out of electricity. So while Kihachi can retain his âsparkâ and want the Catalog he shared with his brother, heâs not dependent on any supposed knowledge Seiroku may have had because his spark is the hope his brother already instilled in him. However, with Yosuke, he sees Seiroku himself as the only âsparkâ so he searches for the Catalog with a psychotic fervor, believing that it holds the key to getting his own spark back. So where some might view Kihachi as weak because heâs still trying to overcome his fear or heâs not as âpowerfulâ with electricity yet, heâs actually far stronger because heâs grounded in who he is and the relationship he had with his brother (even if heâs questioned it since he left) vs Yosuke whoâs constantly off balance and seeking what he believes to be this outside confirmation of Seirokuâs knowledge, which heâs failing to accomplish.
Just some thoughts on my part, could be completely off but the contrast in that first episode between the two felt really interesting. Especially in the way they really make light the focus and it all hinges on how they see Seiruko and his part in it all.

Iâm sorry but I just lost it at this part 𤣠like some of this show it meant to be serious but he just folded like a limp ragdoll, what even was that haha. Would not mind watching this creep get knocked over every episode, the most irritating by far.
A cozy Jinmao for consideration :) I just really like how their dynamic grows over time
This piece took 15 hours, so longer than usual by a few hours! Iâm still not super confident in this overhead angle but I Really wanted to build the piece around this pose that got beamed into my head while I was on the bus home one day
I love Jeffrey but honestly, how could you not love Jeffrey? Heâs such a softie for Victoria and encouraging to Nonna. And oh, the way he so gently leans into Victoria and caresses her braidâŚthat was some Darcy hand flex, make you weak in the knees stuff right there. I also like how, without even knowing, heâs helping Victoria open up barriers she has around her heart. How it didnât show her face when he leaned in but her narration told us that normally she wouldâve put on a fake âfaceâ yet clearly in that moment she likely didnât with him. She didnât even know how she reacted but that just says it was one of her first real reactions with someone. Along with having her first true picnic and hopefully, falling in love. It shows how much of a gentleman he is. That he makes it easy for her to be herself, the person sheâs rediscovering now that sheâs no longer an agent.
In general though I just like the âcourtshipâ approach with these two where you know heâs interested and he respects Victoria but when she tries to use Nonna as somewhat of an excuse at first, heâs swift in making it clear that including her isnât a problem. That he wants them both in his life and heâs willing to take his time to make his intentions clear to her. And Nonna really seems to adore and be comfortable around him which is so important too.
Iâm curious about what his brother said regarding maybe a previous heartbreak, Iâd guess a possible former wife who passed. But that would make more sense why heâs also cautious with Victoriaâs reservations because he understands heartbreak. Hoping thereâs a bright future ahead for these two and canât wait for that upcoming story with them at the ball together.

*sees your wha posts* aw, I personally enjoyed it a lot, it's a shame you didn't enjoy it... then again, I've honestly not delved into the fandom At All bc I wanted to avoid spoilers, so whatever the fandom hive mind thinks is beyond me đ it sucks when a fandom ruins your enjoyment...
I'm actually surprised you came away with the impression Quiffrey manipulates everyone, though! Because my impression was that the narrative *intentionally* misleads you with the goal of making Quiffrey actually, genuinely caring about the kids come as a surprise... and I loved it! I love it when stories get clever about using tropes as tools to play with reader's expectations. (mha does this as well but I DO know THAT particular fandom wouldn't want to hear it lmao)
My read was that Quiffrey's introduction SEEMED like it was leading to a "I'm manipulating everyone to achieve my revenge" character archtype, but THEN it's softly... deconstructed? He worries about Argott pushing too fast and too hard, about Richeh's issues with past teachers, about not letting Coco take her first exam while the Range is at it's highest point... he gets genuinely angry at Euini's teacher being shitty... those things rang as genuine to me đ¤
I think WHA does that deconstruction really well, for all the characters. It puts them in neat little boxes â Argott The Rival, Tatia The Best Friend, Richeh The Quiet One â only for later to unpack them softly, show you that they have more going on for them. For example, I didn't expect Tatia to have the emotional maturity to apologize for blaming Coco when she didn't even say it out loud! But Tatia owned up to it and apologized, which I found super admirable.
Then again, I'm anime-only, so my read might be totally off lol. My impression is that it's too early to tell what WHA's themes are, as every introduced point seems to get a twist later on - e.g. Quiffrey firmly stating that magic is better off hidden, but later delving how The Pact also had bad sides - magic healing is completely forbidden, so it has died off and witches can't cure at all, for example... little conveniences that would make people's lives easier, like humidifiers or clean water whenever, are kept from the public... but we see the horrors of the golden city and get why such drastic action would have been taken, at the same time.
I dunno, I guess I liked what I watched, and I wanted to share :] totally open to talk about your read on quiffrey and the series' themes though, if you want to expound on it!
I appreciate you asking for my thoughts đ And thanks for sharing yours. I can totally get the appeal of WHA, for one the animation is beautiful and even with the manga, the line work is stunning. I get saying that as an anime-only we canât know the themes from the get-go. That being said, I think I may have mentioned in one of my posts that I do a fair amount of research into most of the shows I watch so even when Iâm an anime-only, I usually know a good deal about the plot as a whole. Sometimes I like to go in blind and be surprised but with WHA, I decided to look more into what people were thinking the theme was as fans because of Quifreyâs character and the fact that so many fans were saying he and Olruggio were lovers or something and I donât want to promote anything with a prominent lgbtq theme.
Reading fans posts on Reddit, I picked up on a few things. One, that they did ship Olruggio and Quifrey pretty hard even though there wasnât any clear indication past friendship but if certain fans pointed that out, they were hated on pretty swiftly. The other thing was, most fans believed the underlying current of the narrative to be about access to knowledge and that the story is teaching sort of universal free knowledge, that restriction in any form is stifling to children (basically a socialist mindset) is what they were taking away from it. That being said, there was also a lot of division even in the fandom because others wanted it to be about the problems with ableism and restricting people who have disabilities. Even without this research though, it was pretty easy to figure out what the narrative was saying from how hard it was trying to get it across through some of the characters.
What sort of broke the straw for me was the episode where Richeh goes to take the test. While I think kids can be portrayed as mature and say things wiser than their years, these kids werenât that, it just felt like they were reading repeatedly off a script. And that script was just some forced nonsense no child would ever say. While the story might make sense underneath, say Richeh being upset from a former experience with a bad teacher or Aggott and trying to prove herself to family, the delivery was terrible and more about shifting the narrative of the adult audience when Richehâs character just keeps repeating that she âhas to be herselfâ over and over and basically bullies everyone around her. Yes, theyâre children and we can understand children may have bad habits they need to grow out of but my issue was thatâs thereâs no form of correction here. They just let her walk all over everyone because she had been hurt previously. And then she almost gets affirmed in her attitude when the poor boy Euini says they need to follow the rules but her breaking them and being âauthentic to herselfâ makes more progress.
Even before that, with Tartah, I at first was interested in the âsilver eyesâ concept and him working at the shop which could show a different aspect from the other children and where kids could have meaning beyond an Atelier. But no, instead they turn it into a way to bash on society for not making every place disability friendly and basically insinuating that all people are quietly ableist because they donât accommodate disabilities which would be impossible. And again they return to the idea of access to knowledge because if he has access to magic, his life would be infinitely improved and he could do much more when in reality heâs been happy working at the shop the whole time.
People can say what they want but this is the author pushing an agenda through the mouths of characters. Itâs the whole âbe yourself no matter the consequencesâ theme. Itâs âknowledge is powerâ and the socialistic narrative being driven under the guise of child characters and a flashy, attractive magical tale. I felt like, for me the story should more be âstop coveting what everyone else hasâ because thatâs what got more of the characters into trouble than anything else. But instead the story just pushes that better access and greater knowledge is the answer to all problems when in reality, as even Quifrey says, sometimes people arenât given knowledge because they lack the ability to handle it properly.
Again, overall get why the story and anime has massive appeal. The world building is great and itâs stunning to look at. Hereâs the thing, I really loved Quifreyâs character and Tetia was the best of the little girlâs. She was less preachy and actually seemed to get her own faults and grow from them. Quifrey also had a lot of depth and backstory. This is why I think the childrenâs stories and adults shouldâve been two separate things because mixing them just felt like they couldnât be appreciated fully. Plus, it simply felt uncomfortable having grown men raising little girls alone. People act so comfortable with it but I donât know, when I was a little girl and saw my friends, I never saw anyone who let a teacher hold them like Quifrey does the girls. Yes, this is a story but it was just a weird detail to me. In the end it also became more about pushing an underlying message than about just enjoying a fantastical tale the writer had set up. Anyway, these were just the things I saw and read from others online. Trying to keep down excess spoilers for you too about future plots haha. And yes, the fandom is very upset if you point anything out and arenât 100% in love with it which makes discourse impossible to say the least but thanks again for asking for my thoughts!
I actually like the changes the anime is making from the manga. Namely in regards to Kail and Yuriâs relationship. While the desire is still evident between them, theyâve toned down the overt sexual elements which will hopefully make their dynamic more romantic. At least for me it was somewhat a struggle to get the connection between the two when most of their âbondâ was purely physical. Only issue I could see with the changes would be someone innocently expecting wholesome romance from seeing this and then being surprised at some of the content in the manga. I like though that theyâre keeping Kailâs confident personality and Yuriâs sweetness but making him less, letâs say aggressive, towards her. Weâll see if they change it as it goes on but Iâd rather have Kail whoâs clearly intrigued and interested than the one whoâs just driven only by lust.
Iâm also hoping that Yuri will be less two-dimensional in this adaptation than she felt reading the manga. It often came across like she was merely an object to be passed around between the rotating carousel of men who desired her and then the people who worshiped her. While there was a semblance of âempowermentâshe was little more than a lucky person and didnât have much the mind for leadership beyond being from the future. That being said, Iâm not for pulling the opposite of the damsel in distress and making her a âgirl bossâ either or just a bossy girl more like it. Hoping they emphasize how she starts off a foolish young woman who makes mistakes but can learn from them and become a grown, mature lady. Just donât want it to be a constant string of naivety.
Iâm impressed so far too with the animation, the vibrant saturation and bold stylistic choices for emotional scenes remind me a lot of early 2000s shojo, in the best way but also mixed with the crispness and smooth movement of modern anime. Overall Iâm hopeful the anime will do some of its own original work with the story while staying true to the good points of the manga.
(Red River Spoilers) - One thing that I wish wouldâve been slightly different in Red River is having Yuri go back at least once to say goodbye to her family. Nothing wrong with having her decide she wants to stay in the past with Kail, Kagome did the same with Inuyasha but I think giving the family closure is important too. Having her family be left in the dark is tragic cause you wonder if theyâre forever believing she was kidnapped or went missing which is so sad.
We get she had to make that decision to let them go and the spring was lost which is hard for her in the story but to me there couldâve been an earlier point where she at least got to see them again and told them where she was. Say, she goes back and has an opportunity to take some of the Hittite jewelry, tells them the story and even when they donât believe it, as she says goodbye and doesnât come back, if they go get the jewelry examined they find itâs authentic and then they know where she is and that sheâs safe. The life she left behind wasnât a bad one as in other time travel stories. Yuri actually did cherish her family so having that last moment with them couldâve been a good point for closure.
Quick shout out to the place that inspired this post, an excellent Chinese Restaurant run entirely by a single family of 1st generation immigrants from Hunan, where My Father used to take me and My Brother after weâd go to the beach, which closed permanently the year my son was born
some people really do need to start reminding themselves that the answer to "why didn't the character just do [something entirely different]" is often simply "because then there wouldn't be a story"

Whatâs that saying? Screaming, crying, throwing up đ No, seriously though, nothing really compares to Apothecary Diaries right now I feel like. The story is so well written, the characters are captivating and the animationâŚjust look at it. Cannot wait to have Maomao and Jinshi back in the anime and in this movie. The trailer was a welcome surprise đđ
You didnt know that exodus tells the newly freed slaves rules for how they can own slaves, ans even beat them? You didnt know deuteronomy specifically gives men who rape unmarried women and children a pass and are exempt for rules against rape?
It is true that to become an atheist, all you have to do is read the bible, I guess
@postingtime2 I asked you to cite specific scriptures, not just give untrue generalizations which all atheists do when they have no ability to prove what theyâre trying to claim. Nice try but until you actually can prove your argument, thereâs no discussion here.
For people who claim that God doesnât exist, youâre awfully mad at him and bent on trolling those who have the truth and are willing to defend it with actual facts. Donât claim to know whatâs in Godâs Word like a Christian if you cannot back up what you say.
Whenever you watch a documentary about a cult, they act like their biggest sin is opposing homosexual behavior. Like sure they do child abuse, ritual suicide, forced polygamy, the occasional cannibalism. But did you hear that they don't support the lgbtaarp?

What is with these, quite frankly, insane takes about Vax not submitting due to his ego and wanting to âsave face?â Did we all watch the same show? You know, the one where thereâs a character who has barely any ego and sacrifices himself for his sister and friends over and over? I mean, if people are not able to understand the heroâs journey to this degree, I fear for the ability to grasp much media at all. When heroism is now being spun as selfish and egotistical, thatâs not just a bad take, itâs a dangerous one.
Because yeah, we can say this is fictional and regardless of how people perceive Vaxâs actions, itâs how he was written so people should bear with it and not be so offended. However, if you view a characterâs act of heroism as inherently selfish, what if a person commits such an act in real life? Would you call them an egotistical person just doing it for vanity? If a solider chooses to leap onto on a grenade for comrades, we donât say âwow, just doing it for his ego, what a loser.â No we honor such people because of the costs of their sacrifice. Are there some people who âplay the heroâ for attention? Sure, but that isnât what this is. This isnât a commentary on narcissistic manipulation. Itâs a character journey that leads to one man standing up to a vile, liar of a villain so others can do the same.
Them writing Vax as a character who doesnât submit is completely in line with his arc. Itâs not about ego or pride when he doesnât bow to Vecna. For one, the idea people seem to have that they wouldâve been able to regroup had Vax given in and Vecna wouldâve kept his promise is ludicrous. Heâs a villain, since when are you supposed to trust anything a villain says? Especially when he had just admitted to spinning an unholy web of lies for so long to convince them to kill him so he could resurrect. But yeah, sure, that guy would just let Vax go so they could regroup.
Second to add onto this, he chose Vax purposefully. He knew that Vaxâs abilities as the Champion of the Matron of Ravens was one of the only possibilities of stopping him and he was glad Keyleth had effectively taken that away. So his challenge is to Vax specifically because he holds a grudge against the one person who truly does stand in his way of taking power, namely the Matron and her Champion. In Vax denying him even the satisfaction of submission, itâs him still saying that the Matron and her Champion wonât give him the control he wants.
People just think that his death is so meaningless. My question then would be, what to you makes a death meaningful? Grog and Pike had just discussed this very thing when he was trying to wake her up about The Whispered One and she gave him her blood because she too had believed that everyoneâs death before had been for nothing. But Grog pointed out that he died for Pike and her father died for them. Just because someone chooses to die and someone else calls it a shame and worthless doesnât mean it was so. For Vaxâs character that death had a lot of meaning. Especially because of what he has to weigh in the balance of making that choice. He knew he was free of the Matronâs curse, he knew he could have a life with Keyleth and yet the importance of showing the world you do not have to bow to a liar and a villain was more important in that moment.
The reason Vox Machina is so enjoyable, at least to me, is because these characters have flaws and behave in a highly realistic, relatable way. Theyâre not perfect and can really fall on their face. Thatâs what happened with Keyleth. Peopleâs inability to admit she made a selfish decision because they consider it anti-feminist to say so is absurd. Itâs just narratively true. The others only bowed because they wanted to support her. You can see they disagree and are uncomfortable with the choice. Grog even tries to move forward until Pike discourages him. But itâs this well-rounded character growth and development which makes the story great. If they all just made the expected choice, they wouldnât be the characters we like anymore.
People are welcome to have differing opinions, the problem here is the overarching idea that a heroic action is actually the selfish one vs capitulation which isnât true at all. Thatâs the problem with driving these takes that Vax is the one in the wrong here, because he in no way is. Itâs just fascinating to me that people are trying to spin something objectively good and an honestly incredible character journey into something nasty.
I just saw a dog shit take about Vax killing himself in the s4 finale "to protect his ego" because he "couldn't lie to save himself" and that Keyleth deserved better
Is media literacy dead?? Vax is a heroic character. He has always, always sacrificed himself for the greater good. He will always sacrifice himself for others. His refusal to bend for the Whispered One was literally THE OPPOSITE OF SELFISH!! He did it to save the world! He is a hero and has been for a majority if not the entire show!
Yes, Keyleth does deserve better than losing Vax. She deserves her happy ending. But he was always doomed. He's been doomed since he became the Raven Queen's champion. She chose to be with him, even knowing who he is. The fact that he chose to sacrifice himself shows that he is the very opposite of selfish! He chose the world over spending the rest of his life with his girlfriend and his sister and Vox Machina, because he is a hero
Indeed, RIP to media literacy. Made a post about this very thing, Vax being sacrificial and why that makes him great and yet had people coming to me trying to explain how not great that is. Talk about confusingâŚI mean weâve had comic book heroes since forever. Sacrificial heroes are part of the fabric of society and we adore them because of this exact kind of characterization and now suddenly that honorable behavior is now seen as somehow wrong?? It truly is mind boggling and the opposite of understanding the story arc and why his death and any heroâs journey is meaningful at all.
