She crosses her arms over her chest. Her brow furrows in the same was all the Pines’ brows furrow — a look of disdain that runs in the family. 

          “ Not recently, are you here to change that? ”     incredulous at first, but her face slowly melts back into its natural resting state — a smile, nice and wide, enough to make most people's cheeks hurt.

    “ Oooh I get it, you're finally coming around! Dipping your toes into some good synth-pop, huh? Here to bop? ”     Aaaand right on cue! Here come the synths! Oh, she loves this song!

It’s not her fault they caught her stuffing jolly ranchers in her cheeks! She needs to see how many she can fit! For science!

          “ What do you mean? ”     is what she meant to say, but they probably can’t understand her, what with all of the melting hard candies stuck in her mouth. Did she even think of how they might stick to the brackets of her braces? Well! That’s a problem for later Mabel!

She had been hugging her knees to her chest, sitting on the rickety old sofa on the back porch for a good chunk of the afternoon, staring off into the pines and the redwoods wistfully. The summer went by so fast — eighth grade is just around the corner, but that means…

The hand on her shoulder startles her out of her thoughts — she looks up at Ford with big, round eyes. She smiles, but it’s not as bright as usual. It’s somber. She looks back out into the woods. 

          “ I sorta don’t want to leave here — ”     she says softly,     “ Summer went by too quick — I don’t think I’ll have enough time to knit you the sweater I have been meaning to! ”

GASP !!     “ Mabelcakes? ”     She scurries up to the kitchen table, fork and knife at the ready. She can’t help but to kick her legs in excitement! Did Willow put enough chocolate chips? Sprinkles?     

          “ Stan banned me from making Mabelcakes on my own. Said they were an “affront to God” and that I was “costing him a small fortune in chocolate chips.” Whatever that means. Chocolate chips are a necessity! That’s priceless, baby! ”

          “ Awww, are you hangry? I get vicious and blood-thirsty when I’m hangry, too — I’ve got some pocket candy! ”     Mabel squats to be eye level with Bill, fishing out some of the warm and sticky candy from her skirt pocket. Yeah, there is some lint stuck in the wrappers — beggars can’t be choosers!

          “ I’ve gooooooot… ”     she pushes the half melted pieces of candy around in her hand with her index finger as she inspects them,     “ — Blue raspberry and cherry and watermelon — actually, scratch that on the watermelon. That bad boy's mine! ”

God, it really makes him s̵̤̙̤̲̾̍̀͐ị̸͈͔̟̀͒̾̒̚c̴̼̦̞̹̝̈́ͅk̴̮̹̞̫̦̄̀, all that talk about hope and love. She still burns bright with childlike optimism, even after time should have taken its toll on her. Maybe, in a way, it has: She clings so desperately in that puny human way to purity, to innocence, to bright eyes and chipper smiles, as though these things will somehow make it all better.   ( NEWSFLASH, KID: IT’S NEVER GETTING BETTER!! )

Bill plays along, of course, playing his cartoonish part. Here, he is not a malicious entity, but a redemptive one. He is another bright thing in Mabelland, sugary and simple, capable of only what her whims dictate. He is something good, because Mabel can only dream of good things.

          “𝙶𝙾𝚂𝙷,   𝚈𝙾𝚄   𝚁𝙴𝙰𝙻𝙻𝚈   𝙼𝙴𝙰𝙽   𝙸𝚃,   𝙼𝙰𝙱𝙴𝙻?   𝚈𝙾𝚄'𝚁𝙴   𝚂𝚄𝙲𝙷   𝙰   𝙿𝙴𝙰𝙲𝙷!   𝙸   𝙺𝙽𝙴𝚆   𝚃𝙷𝙴𝚁𝙴   𝚆𝙰𝚂   𝙰   𝚁𝙴𝙰𝚂𝙾𝙽   𝙸   𝙻𝙸𝙺𝙴𝙳   𝚈𝙾𝚄!”                    He shoots out of his seat and across the table in a pantomime of delighted excitement, doing swooping loop-de-loops and infinity-symbols around her head.          “𝙶𝙴𝙴,   𝙾𝙵   𝙲𝙾𝚄𝚁𝚂𝙴   𝙸   𝙲𝙰𝙽   𝚃𝙴𝙰𝙲𝙷   𝙼𝚈   𝙵𝙰𝚅𝙾𝚁𝙸𝚃𝙴   𝙿𝙸𝙽𝙴𝚂   𝚃𝙾   𝙿𝙻𝙰𝚈   𝙲𝙷𝙴𝚂𝚂!”

         Maybe, if was the least bit as suspicious as her brother, she would notice just how strange it is that Bill was so willing to fit into her idea of “good”. But she’s not Dipper, she’s Mabel — optimistic, too-trusting Mabel, willing to give anyone and everything the benefit of the doubt. People change, so why can’t triangles!

         “ Favorite Pines? Now I think you’re just buttering me up, ”     Mabel giggles, large brown eyes struggling to track the triangular entity's flight path. The tea table shifts to that of a chess table instead, though she isn’t sure if it was of her summoning or his. But it’s glittery and such a brilliant blue, a perfect fit for the Lisa Frank landscape of her dreams.

Mabel has half a mind to tell Bill to cut the “Gee” and “Golly” shit — it’s so not him. It feels so forced, like a character out of an early morning Sunday cartoon. Ultimately, however, she decides to drop it — this is his redemption arc after all, he can talk however he wants!

          “I don’t rule anything out,”          Zero says, smiling.          “There are plenty of things I don’t actively believe in, but I also don’t actively disbelieve them, either. I think that would be arrogant. Cryptids, sure — I don’t see why they wouldn’t be out there, though I’m sure half the ‘evidence’ we have are elaborate hoaxes. Monsters, absolutely, all sorts. Magic, yes.” 

He makes his way to the kitchen, preparing himself a drink; he makes her one, too, adding a generous helping of edible glitter. Returning to the living room, he hands her a glass filled to the brim with swirling, sparkling purple, then drapes himself over the couch, his own drink in hand.  

          “And I do speak French, for the record. Votre frère a raison à propos de moi, au fait. Je suis une chose maléfique de l'Enfer.”          He winks and takes a sweet sip of black raspberry. 

         Mabel trills, reaching dainty hands forward to grasp the drink offered to her. Another sound escapes her, this one of pure girlish delight.

         “ I forgot you speak French… Wow… ”     She’s utterly starstruck! Delighted! She will have to apologize to Dipper later — there is just no way she is going to be able to keep up with this stupid investigation. Her brain is pretty much anywhere but the list of questions he prepared for her, that list long lost within the confines of her purse, or maybe Waddles’ stomach. She takes a sip of the purple, swirling drink in her hands, her face scrunching with a delighted smile,     “ You should teach me some French sometime. ”

So what if he’s a monster! That's pretty cool anyways! And now she has to do anything she can to appear cool to him.

If he wants it to look like he’s taking this seriously, then he has to think like he’s taking it seriously — so he summons a sparkly gel pen and Lisa Frank notepad from the Mabel-made ether, jotting down her instructions like an attentive student.

He looks over the notes in a contemplative fashion. These all seem like terrible, no good, boring things to do   ( GOD, BEING ‘GOOD’ IS SUCH A RACKET! )   — but he can play the part. In fact, some of this will actually be pretty easy — Shooting Star’s bright idea to  ‘prove himself’ is really just a new, creative way for him to torment Pine Tree, so that’s kind of a win!

          “𝚈𝙾𝚄  𝚁𝙴𝙰𝙻𝙻𝚈  𝚃𝙷𝙸𝙽𝙺  𝚃𝙷𝙸𝚂  𝚆𝙸𝙻𝙻  𝚆𝙾𝚁𝙺?”          Bill holds up his to-do list.         “𝚆𝙷𝙰𝚃  𝙸𝙵  𝙿 -  𝙳𝙸𝙿𝙿𝙴𝚁  𝙳𝙾𝙴𝚂𝙽'𝚃  𝚃𝙰𝙺𝙴  𝙸𝚃  𝚆𝙴𝙻𝙻?”

         Dipper doesn’t take most things well these days, it seems. He’s plagued with nightmares and horror these days, always looking over his shoulder, so he can see the imagined threats sneaking up on him. Mabel’s face threatens to fall from her notorious smile.

Well, something outta work, right? If Mabel herself can’t soothe him, maybe seeing the thing that’s given him such grief in the past be nice will change his mind, right? One can only hope — she’s not sure what to do anymore.

         “ We can hope! And if he doesn’t… well, we can figure something else out, okay? Hope is the most important part of being the change you wanna see! ”

He can be redeemed, she thinks. Everyone can, and he was nice enough to give her a slice of paradise when he tried to take over the world — that niceness had to come from somewhere! A deep vein of kindness perhaps yet to be tapped! She fully plans to help him realize that potential.
