Specifically the remake, but I learned a lot of those from the original, so those work there too.
Loot everything! There's no encumbrance or inventory limit, so there's no real downside to dragging everything to the next merchant to get sweet, sweet ore. (Dynamic prices in the remake balance that so you have to bother multiple merchants in all camps, but also makes it more useful to have a wide variety of items.)
Stomp every meat bug. I know they're cute and innocent, but unfortunately you want their meat. Especially in the remake where you can make your own delicious meat bug ragout.
Speaking of meat bug ragout. Snaf's quest is a must! You'll get 3 portions of ragout for free every day. Free healing!
Grab a beer on your way from the exchange place to the Old Camp. One of the New Camp guys (I think Drax?) will tell you things in exchange for one. It doesn't increase stats or anything, but it's useful information for first-time players.
Diego trains strength and dexterity for 0 ore without joining any camp! You need that to do more damage.
Get a world map. Then forget to consult it. But at least you have one.
Don't worry about going to the Swamp Camp early on. Baal Parvez will kill any beast for you while you watch from a distance. And you get the XP! Personally I recommend learning to harvest claws first, otherwise you'll miss out on those. (In the original the carcasses didn't stick around, I think. In the remake they do, but I don't know for how long. They also look like they're rotting, so you might not be able to grab loot after a while anyway.)
In the Swamp Camp, grab your daily gift of 3 joints from Fortuno. Then go to the New Camp and offer them to NPCs. Basically 30 ore for free, every day. Also, buy any joints below 10 ore to turn a profit.
There's a lot of ore lying around in the Old Mine. In the remake also at the bottom of the lakes at the exchange place and the New Camp.
Offer Aleph 50 ore for the key. I know it's a lot, but it's worth it.
Remake exclusive! Get yourself a tame scavenger. They're fast and can easily outrun most, if not all, enemies between camps. I forgot who tells you were to find Cohsel, but it's someone in the Old Camp.
Don't rebind your primary interaction key to a combat key. Yes, that should be obvious. Yes, I'm stupid. (I changed F to E in classic Skyrim fashion and couldn't light things with torches or grab things underwater. That I had to put away my sword to loot probably should've clued me in way sooner.)
Don't join the Old Camp right away. Apply to every camp and only avoid the quests that lock you out of another (you'll know which ones those are), and only then pick one. You need the XP.
Read your quest logs! Those are your quest markers in Gothic. And while you're at it, read character and beast entries, and the tutorials.
Training skills does make things easier. You swing faster, you draw your bow faster, lockpicking does get easier (according to the tutorial, I haven't trained it yet).
Torches are reusable (at least in the remake). Once burned out you can pick them up and light them again. (Which is only fair, given how dark the nights are.)
The forest north of the Old Camp is a good place to hunt XP in the first chapter (just be careful with the wolves). The forest to the south is not.
