its basically a placeholder for the species name! so when the genus is clear but the species is uncertain or irrelevant, you replace it with sp.

I wish I had a cooler answer but I just sketch a lotta rough ideas. I’d recommend practicing sketching poses following a line of action. I found a site that illustrates just that. And this book on rapid visualization I was lovingly forced to buy for my professor’s class lmao~
