I’m going to level with you. I have listened to The Devil Went Down to Georgia for most of my life. We were a country music household, this was a staple of my childhood along with Johnny Cash, Garth Brooks, and that one Chipmunks country album.
I have no idea what “Fire on the mountain run boys run/The Devil's in the house of the rising sun/Chicken in the bread pan picking out dough/Granny does your dog bite no child no” means and at this point I’m too scared to ask.
For once I can be of assistance.
Each of the lyrics comes from an old-time hickory song for fiddles, and is a lyric from that corresponding song.
"Fire on the Mountain" --> "Fire on the Mountain, run boys run"
Fire On The Mountain - Fiddle Player POV
"The House of the Rising Sun" --> "The Devil's in the house of the rising sun"
House of the Rising Sun
"Ida Red" --> "Chicken in the bread pan peckin' out dough"
Ida Red - Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys
"Granny Will Your Dog Bite" --> "Granny does your dog bite? 'No child, no'."
FTC #149 Granny Will Your Dog Bite
And for your furthered education, The Mountain Whipporwill.
Mountain Whippoorwill (aka How Hillbilly Jim Won the Great Fiddler's Prize)
this is the key part of the song, that a lot of people miss. people have this misconception that the contest between Johnny and The Devil is about who is the better fiddle player. but it isn't. its about who is the better fiddler.
in a time before things like radios and record players, every time you heard music was because there was somebody in the room with you playing an instrument. and many, many, many social events involved dancing, which requires music. so, if you're planning any kind of gathering in the american south or appalachia, you need to find a fiddler. and the fiddler's job is to play music that everybody knows and likes and can dance to.
the mistake The Devil makes in his bet with Johnny is that he misinterprets the contest as being about technical ability, so he has this big flashy song. he plays fast and impressively with a band of demons playing unfamiliar instruments in unfamiliar rhythms. he's definitely more skilled at playing than Johnny, and thinks he has it in the bag.
but Johnny wins because the contest is about being the best fiddler. the song uses these lines mentioned above as a shorthand for saying that Johnny is playing these songs. Johnny launches into a set of the most popular songs, played well, and that's what gives him his big win. A good fiddler knows all the hits, and can read the room to know what to play next. The Devil loses because he completely fails to read the room, and doesn't know the right songs.
STOP! THEY'RE SO FREAKING CUTE!!
After finally clearing up the mistakes keeping them apart... we got a lapsitting kiss! A+
for people like me, fei said as she reiterated her real intention behind her line of work. i teared up with the way she expressed her words. it almost felt like a revelation, that finally she is doing something so valuable without any restriction for being who she truly is. for helping others using the power bestowed upon her.
fei, you are so, so important.

There are few color palettes my eyes love more than the original Gilbert Baker pride flag
Like dang, nailed it the first time, A+++ 0 notes
I’m having déjà vu but I really don’t think I already posted this, so here goes.
Not only was Baker’s flag gorgeous, he had some fascinating and poignant ideas about what the colors he used symbolized.
This is from page 82 of Queer X Design: 50 Years of Signs, Symbols, Banners, Logos, and Graphic Art of LGBTQ by Andy Campbell, which I highly recommend.

In Pride month, I think it's important to remind you of this iconic dialogue. You don't have to talk about who you are if you don't want to❤️

Why is the picture of Susannah Harker and Crispin Bonham Carter at Austen’s house celebrating 30 years of the ‘95 adaptation cheering me up so much
"Can we be loners together, just the two of us?"
—CAGED AGAIN · Episode 08
I just saw an anon come into a gif-maker’s ask box and start with the phrase: “I’m trying not to spam your inbox with reblogs, but” and then go on to say how much they love the gifs.
But I’m still stuck on that opening phrase because…what? I am so confused by how people view interactions on tumblr & AO3 these days. Let me make it very clear for anyone who is unsure:
CREATORS WANT YOU TO INTERACT WITH THEIR WORK.
The limit does not exist on how many of their works you can interact with in a certain period.
If you like every fic they’ve ever written? Then feel free to give them all kudos and even leave a comment on every single one if you feel inclined! If you’re going through someone’s blog and you vibe with every post, like/reblog to your heart’s content!
As long as you’re not expecting something back from them or adding a ton of irrelevant comments, it’s not spam! It’s what this is all about!! I’m not even much of a creator and I still feel a huge sense of pride when I see a ton of notifications in a row from a person, as it clearly shows they thought my blog was worth spending time on.
And if for some reason a creator is annoyed by this (unlikely), they can manage their own experience (turn off notifs, not look at their notes, delete the fic, etc) -- so don’t deprive the majority of creators because of some imagined annoyed person. Fandom is a collaborative effort and we all must participate!
Damn. Now, I can't unsee it 🤣🤣🤣
Now, that's just slander 😂😂😂
Wait...so all of that is just foreplay??? Damn.
Not the tofu and Newie’s face side by side 🤣
Contrary to popular belief, a show doesn’t have to be a bl to be queer. A show doesn't even have to have romance between two men at all to be queer. A show doesn't even have to ALLUDE to romance at all two men at all to be queer. (Just to cover everything, a show also doesn't have to allude to romance between two women to be queer.)
The point is, "queer" isn't a rigid box applying only to two men in love. "Queer" doesn't apply only to romance either. Sometimes, being queer even includes an explicit LACK of romance.
As a queer person who took seven years to become confident in my queerness because I felt like I was supposed to shove myself into a box to "count," the whole meaning behind being "queer" is that we're different from what the society thinks we ought to be. We're not "normal." And even as being queer and out becomes more common, it's STILL SOMETHING THAT MAKES US DIFFERENT. ITS STILL SOMETHING THAT CAN GET YOU OSTRACIZED FROM YOUR COMMUNITY. ITS STILL SOMETHING WE ARE HAVING TO FIGHT FOR THE RIGHT TO LIVE AS.
And this post is specifically about Wu. The fact that Pete and Niran aren't making out on your screen doesn't make it not queer. Trans rep? Check. A story about a boy who disappointed his grandfather because he wasn't exactly what his grandfather expected and wanted? He didn't behave how he ought? Well, that's something we in the queer community are quite familiar with. Group of outcasts coming together? I mean, come on, that's textbook queer allegory.
The point is Wu is both allegorically and straightforwardly queer, and that's NOT including the allusions to romantic goings on between Niran and Pete.
