Puppet Tuesday! I think it’s time for a “I make big ass puppets in my apartment” post. It’s messy. It’s organized chaos even though it doesn’t look like it. My dining table is always covered. John Wayne my tripod kitty finds lots of new places to hide within the puppets and things to sit on (the fabric). I basically give up my dining/living room and parts of my kitchen—for weeks at a time. And, my supplies are stashed in the bedroom all year round. Would it be nice to have a studio? Yes. It’s Tuesday and you know what that means... PUPPETS! This intricate shadow puppet was carved by Wang Tianwen, a master puppet-maker from Xi’an. Thanks to the collection of puppets on display at last year’s #internationalpuppetfringefestival I was able to see it. I’m not a beer snob, I just play one on tv. 🤪 This is a CHEERS to my friend Abigail and Two Little Devils, who both got me to play a little bit more. ❤️ Our Two Little Devils anniversary was last week (what’s up with all the anniversaries?! 😜) so I’m celebrating today with of photo of me in my “landlord” mask at the beer garden after Abs and I did a run of random puppeting through LIC and Astoria. Our hijinks almost caused a traffic accident as a tractor trailer truck crossed several lanes rapidly in order to snap a photo of us. Today’s #puppettuesday is for Daniel Striped Tiger and his #puppeteer Fred Rogers of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. Daniel Tiger, a shy tiger, lived in a clock in the Neighborhood of Make-Believe. His wristwatch is a gift from a thoughtful child who watched the show and noted that his clock had no hands. He was one of the predominant puppets in the show and would often sing to children and adults. One of the more well known and important songs— a duet with Lady Elaine— dealt with Daniel’s feeling of being a mistake. I finally saw the film “Won’t You Be My Neighbor”, the portrait of Fred Rogers. It was amazing to learn so much more about a man who I already felt I knew from watching his show as a child. And, I think the film is timely as we as a people deal with intolerance of tolerance. I really wish there was someone in television today who had the same vision of tolerance and love, drive and effect. So, to close— if you haven’t, see the film. There are so many parallels to today. Making kids and adults laugh as you interact with them is tops in my book. We danced, we bounced, Maude let tiny tots pat her on the back while Camilla kissed a few parade-goers and may have stuck her nose in a car or two. #PuppetTuesday - this is a princess (currently at MoMI) from “The King of Eight”— a counting stop-motion piece for Sesame Street by Jim Henson. Henson does the voices and Don Sahlin built the puppets from Henson’s sketches. This princess is made with a toy bowling pin and ball. Puppet Tuesday: today I’m just going to post two of my favorite holiday-related puppets since it is now December. Heat Miser and Snow Miser voiced by George S. Irving and Dick Shawn. They are from my favorite Rankin/Bass Production— and it’s likely my favorite because of these two and their respective songs. The Year Without a Santa Claus first aired in 1974 and I watched it every year— but definitely remember the years it was missing from the holiday special lineup. (Not sure why they skipped a few years— but boooo for that). Maury Laws and Jules Bass we’re responsible for the music.
