sometimes get sad thinking about Ed going about his life pre canon. he is at his baseline so friendly and gentle and goofy but his reputation overshadows him and no one sees him. but don't worry Ed i see you. i see your tummy out under your cool outfit Ed. Ed i heard you giggling over trinkets

Thing that I find heartbreaking is also that he obviously has people who would embrace that in him if he was able to show it to them - Fang and Ivan are both very receptive to the change in his behavior on board the Revenge. But he's afraid and he's untouchable and his only really close contact is a man who hates all of that (and can reliably decide to kill him if he behaves that way).

heartbreaking is really the word for it! bc we know for a fact he and Fang especially can get on really well but Ed doesn't even spend enough time with him pre canon to know his real name (and tbh i honestly doubt if pre-canon Fang would've known Ed's real name either). they wear masks with each other. and Ed could've had friends this whole time, but they couldn't see him and once it got to the point it did Ed could literally say in front of everyone "i do not want to be called Blackbeard anymore, i'm Ed and this is how i want to live my life from now on" and it didn't even work.
