I was commissioned by Followsthebees to illustrate a scene in her and CatBandit’s fic “Shaded Verbena”
Top Five Joel Fry Movie Roles
This week, I’m picking out my Top Five Movie Roles for Joel Fry. Personally, I think Joel’s film work varies a lot more in quality than his TV work. In movies, he’s had more bit parts/thankless roles, and he’s been in a few movies that are just too bad for me to enjoy. But pretty much every time he's given anything at all to work with, he turns in a splendid performance. Here are my favorites!
Rocky, Yesterday
(GIF by @loripacks)
I can’t quite articulate why this character has such a hold on me. Yesterday is a regrettably-mid movie, but I love Rocky to bits! He’s delightfully funny, an adoring friend, and I like the way Joel Fry’s performance pushes against the boundaries of the usual archetype for this sort of character. He’s the chaotic comic-relief best friend, but Joel plays him with genuine depth of feeling, and I just can’t get enough of it!
Jasper, Cruella
(GIF by @rasputinaillyanna)
Look, say whatever you want about Cruella. I don’t even care. I really enjoyed this movie, and I loved Joel Fry as Jasper. He brings so much much warmth and heart to the film with his performance—in a story that has a lot of archness and artifice, I love the contrast of Jasper being so honest and grounded.
Hugh, Bank of Dave
(GIF by @derekstilinski)
Although this movie is kind of a boilerplate feel-good underdog story, I love it for Joel Fry’s performance as Hugh. He plays so well off Rory Kinnear’s Dave, and I adore watching awkward, anxious Hugh gradually come out of his shell during his time in Burnley. In many ways, this is a film where the plot and a number of the characters can feel predictable/formulaic, but as Hugh, Joel defies all my expectations of what that sort of role in that sort of movie is like. God, I love Hugh so much!
R, The End We Start From
(GIF by @derekstilinski)
Joel Fry plays this role with such sensitivity, omg. From R’s gentle sweetness with the Woman in the early scenes to his quiet vulnerability as he’s wrecked by trauma, Joel navigates this complex character with honesty and compassion. The soft intimacy between him and Jodie Comer is also excellent!
Bob, American Sweatshop
(GIF by @derekstilinski)
Just like with my Top Five TV Roles last week, the final entry on this list is from a very recent project, one that was newly released as I was doing Joel Fry-days. There’s just something about Bob—despite the slightly uncanny American accent, this is a wonderful performance that adds so much to the film. It’s so interesting to me that the other moderators kind of hold Bob up as this example, like, “Hey, at least I’m not that screwed up!”, but really, Bob is the one who’s actually allowing himself to process the toxicity their work exposes him to. He’s raw, authentic, and messy in a way that his coworkers don’t allow themselves to be.
Ok like. Imagine life without ads. You wake up, check your messages across a variety of apps, no ads. You get up and put on the tv while you prep your breakfast, no ads. Maybe you drive somewhere and switch on the radio, no ads. Maybe you drive a long distance, yet somehow, not a single billboard on your path. You pick up a newspaper or magazine to pass the time, no advertisements only articles. You turn on your game console, the home screen is just about your games, no ads to buy more. You open a streaming app, you don't pay extra for no ads, there's just no ads ever.
Think about how much of your time is spent looking at ads. "Download ublock" yeah I know, I have. But that doesn't change that the world is covered with endless advertising. Imagine never seeing that again. How much better our lives would be.
Christoph Steinbrenner/Rainer Dempf, "Delete!" (06.2005, Vienna)
"it's you!"
"despite everything, it's still you."
things in fic I'm used to people kind of faking their way through writing about:
the city of los angeles
the city of new york
sex
how drinking alcohol works
how getting high works
how a child of any age speaks
how nuclear physics work
how [my job] works
how debilitating being shot in the shoulder is
how hypothermia works
things I have never before seen someone fake their way through writing about, until today:
what french toast is
read through the notes on this one trust me
Here's some of the notes, starting with the things multiple people brought up:
SHRIMP COCKTAIL:
banahbanah: #flashback to that one fic where Peter Parker frets about drinking shrimp cocktail because of the alcohol
generaldeliciousness: adding: what a prawn/shrimp cocktail is
#why is your character turning it down because they're under 21 #do you think prawn cocktail is a cocktail #this lives in my brain rent-free constantly #the rest of the fic was so normal #and good enough that i'll still re-read it #but bro
And then many, MANY, people wondering if this was actually authour mistake, since Peter really would do this!
POMEGRANATES:
zhajhassa: #haha where's that post that was like someone describing someone eating a pomegranate but they ate it like an apple
thornhands: #once someone wrote persephone biting into a whole Pomegranate #had to stop and stare at a wall for a minute
sungsingsanguine: I once saw someone very confidently write about a character eating slices of pomegranate.
FRUIT TREES:
zagreuses-toast: #given a very endearing glimpse into a writers blindspots by seeing them describe someone sitting under a ''pineapple tree''
salatrash: I remember something about picking watermelons... OF A FUCKING TREE
baander: #cranberry trees
DOUGH/BATTER:
maycelium: #I'm a chef so I'm really used to people not accurately describing how to cook food #But I was surprisingly flabbergasted when someone was writing making a cake and was kneading it. Which uh #Not necessary for cake. It was interesting for sure but just bizarre
livebloggingmydescentintomadness: #the one that drove me nuts was when a character set aside a batch of PASTA DOUGH 'to rise' #pasta doesn't have yeast!! #it does need to REST but it will never RISE #you do not want an airy crumb on your noodles
lovesodeepandwideandwell: #THE ONE WHERE THEY MADE COOKIES BY LADLING BATTER INTO A TRAY

they really do just say anything on this show
It's no secret that I love a good romcom and the different subgenres that can fall under that. I haven't been too impressed with romcoms over the past decade or so — haven't connected enough to them to rewatch (Red, White, and Royal Blue is one of the exceptions and can be a separate essay entirely) — but I found one that affected me more than I thought it would. After watching I thought I must read the book immediately and was surprised to see it was an original spec script.
This film balanced the heartbreak, the comedy, and just the sheer charm of a good story. It felt deep and thought provoking and while it is a love story between a romantic couple, it is even more a love story of two sisters. Izzy and Jill's bond drove the story and you could feel how much they loved each other and brought out the best in each other. It made me want to call my sister!
A good story is one that encapsulates different aspects of human life and emotion. Some would say that grief may be the driving force of the narrative here, but I think it's love that carries the story. The love that you hold onto, the love that helps you, that motivates you, that doesn't save you but rather inspires you to become a person of worth. Whatever that worth may be.
It made me cry as much as I laughed and smiled. A beautiful story.

I love the idea of Castiel being uncanny and terrifying to people other than the winchesters(supernatural entities included)
Dean: trying to hunt a vampire wondering why it won’t come out to attack him
Vampire: was about to attack the hunter until he saw an eldritch horror standing right behind him and honestly considering if he should warn the hunter instead.

gay love can pierce throught the veil of death and save the day EXCEPT☝ when death pierces the veil and kills the loving gay. important distinction
You know those posts where people explained something that happened to them in their childhood and they get looked at funny? They don't understand why because they thought it was normal till they talked to other people? And now they know that oftentimes those things were toxicity, neglect, abuse? That's how I started the journey of unpacking my childhood trauma. Your parents made it a game to see who can pick up the most toys the fastest. Normal! A great way to get kids to clean up and make it fun. My parents timed how long it took us to read a page in a book. Seems normal at first glance, a good way to help kids read. But then they progressed to weekly weight and height check ins making us run laps around the house during the summer so we "didnt get lazy or fat during the summer." Yelled at when our time was slower or we gained weight. It took me telling my friends in college to realize it wasn't normal. And now almost two decades later, I have a better understanding of my childhood and its irregularities, my responses to things. How I curb those responses and heal from it.
