I really find, in online spaces, broadly Europeans can dish it out but can't take it. It's free game to dunk on the food poor Americans consume, with limited transportation options, restrictions on how EBT and WIC can be used, and food deserts - but the second someone looks askance at how peasants once used offal, or fermented a fish, God does the crying start.
To be clear, I don't think anyone should be shitty about anyone else's culture and I am INFINITELY weary of "British food bad," criticism, or "Welsh language has no vowels," jokes. Both are completely ignorant. But the lack of awareness gets old.
I recently noticed this after a Sudanese man (originally thought to be Somali) attacked a man in Belfast. Quite obviously this is bad. Unfortunately, quite normally for racists in the UK, the response was to form a gang and terrorize immigrants or people who were too brown. They kicked in doors of homes and shops, broke windows, and set cars on fire.

As soon as a comment section pointed out that Europe has its own racism to face, and it's not the harmonious place it might like to appear, oh GOD the hang wringing and wailing .
"No, no, this is just Belfast! It is," and I swear this is a quote said without a touch of irony, "THE MOST VOLATILE CITY IN EUROPE."
Which, of course, the stats immediately don't bear out, even if we don't include Kiev in the middle of being bombed by drone. The first city in the UK to appear on the list is Birmingham at #2.

When I pointed this out for the nonsense it is, it was insisted that NO city in France holds a candle to Chicago.
If I'm picking a dangerous American city, it's not Chicago. And the irony is, Chicago and Marseille are actually quite comparable in terms of crime.

It's as ludicrous to say Belfast is uniquely racist and violent in the whole of Europe as it is to say it's only Mobile, AL that's a problem in America. Europeans are racist in ways even an openly racist American couldn't comprehend, unless he's the kind to get boners about war criminals. If you asked an American racist to pick a side of Croat or Serb, he'd look at you like you grew two heads. Western Europeans hate Eastern Europeans hate Southern Europeans and so on. There were Belgian units in Nazi occupied Belgium that VOLUNTEERED to fight for the Reich in the Eastern front to "defend Western civilization." Ethnic cleansings, MULTIPLE, exist within living memory! To claim only Northern Ireland is racist is laughably absurd.
With the collapse of European empires globally (and the migrant crisis is a direct consequence of that domino, make no mistake), Europeans find it no longer in vogue to claim that they are superior by way of conquest and eugenics, though it's a secret belief at the heart of every racist lighting cars on fire. Instead, they like to claim cultural superiority over barbaric places like America. To say, "Europe isn't racist, it's only X," is a ridiculous "No true Scotsman," argument. Europe is racist because racist things keep happening there, indeed, as they do all across the planet. It would be nice if they could just be honest about it.
Or: does it suck to get lumped in with people you don't agree with and have no control over? Does that feel bad? I can't even imagine.
