The new EHRC Code of Practice pushes trans people out of toilets, hospital wards, and community spaces. It normalises gender policing based on appearance and stereotypes. It becomes statutory guidance in the UK by the end of June.
Trans people are now legally their assigned gender at birth and must join gendered spaces accordingly, but if they are perceived as their lived gender, they can also be ejected from those spaces. The guidance says: either break the law, or don’t pass too well.
A mass lobby is where you invite your MP to discuss your concerns with you in-person. Ask your MP to:
Demand full parliamentary scrutiny, debate, and use their free vote on the EHRC Code of Practice.
Support any motions rejecting the EHRC guidance. As of June 4th, Labour MP Nadia Whittome has submitted a prayer motion - Early Day Motion 240.
Write to Bridget Phillipson, the Minister for Women and Equalities about our concerns
Your MP does not have to be an ally, they do not have to respond to your email for you to show up and greencard them (details below the cut.) What matters is that as many people as possible show up.
I cannot stress this enough: Showing up in person matters. It is much more effective than petitions, emails, and letters.
It is a horrible, stressful time, and I am so sorry if you're trans and live in the UK. But I was at last year's mass lobby and the line for greencarding alone stretched around the back gates. Bring your personal worries about transphobia being signed into law, and trans friends being excluded from public spaces. You are a living person who deserves dignity. Remind your MP of that. Got a refusal or no response from your MP?
Come anyway! You can request a same-day appointment with your MP through a process called greencarding. They will come and see you if they’re already in Parliament. Even if they don’t, they’re made acutely aware of your cause because you showed up in person. This is my greencard from last year.
Here is the EHRC Code of Practice in full. It's a tough read, but some highlights are:
Organisations can’t provide trans-inclusive, single-sex services, or they risk being sued for discrimination.
e.g. domestic violence support for women including trans women, men’s rugby group including trans men (12.68).
Trans people will have nowhere safe to pee.
If you’re a trans man, businesses can't allow you to pee in the men's, and you can also be ejected from women’s bathrooms if you’re perceived as a man. Vice versa for trans women. EHRC suggests a ‘third space’ bathroom, which is discriminatory and unworkable for most businesses. (13.130-133)
Sports organisations must exclude trans people from single-sex competitions (13.73).
A women’s only sports competition must exclude trans women because of their biological advantage or face potential lawsuits (13.74), but a trans man who has undergone testosterone treatment can also be excluded based on fairness rules (13.81).
Trans women are stripped of the legal definition of ‘lesbian’, and therefore no longer have legal protections if they’re discriminated against on the basis of sexual orientation. (2.50, 2.92).

This is real. Also, I had periods for about a decade pre-transition, and those can be debilitating, too, and should be given special consideration if the person having them experiences things like severe pain, heavy bleeding, issues with things like cysts, extreme nausea or fatigue, etc.

I think ultimately a lot of Privilege is hard to spot because people tend to think of it as, like, getting free stuff, but it's more about the absence of specific oppressions. Proving a negative is always tricky but if you shift your framework a little it's a lot easier to see, say, "white people aren't treated like x" "men don't get scrutinized for y" than thinking of it as Normal People and Oppressed People and a secret third category of mythical Privileged People who have No Problems Whatsoever. As a child, Cyrano hungers not for food, but love. His mother find him ugly and makes it clear at every given opportunity, or worse, tries to hide her disgust and hurts him all the more. All he wishes for is to be loved.
As a grownup, he hungers for love still, sees the loving couples in the parks and – at night – dreams to have a woman of his own on his arm, in the park, in some dark, secret corner. The shadow of his profile hinders him, the physical manifestation of his trauma.
Where he cannot have love, he hungers for the uproar and hate of others then, the conflict and the clashing of swords, makes enemies as if the hate itself can keep him alive.
He hungers for Roxane’s love, too. He cannot jump over his own shadow and tell her, especially when she confesses her infatuation with Christian first, so he takes the backseat and pretends to be nothing but the brother she never had, who offers guidance and listens to her ramblings about her lover. He hungers for her attention and her affection, and goes to visit her loyally after Christian’s death.
As a grownup, he hungers for food too. There are no "exact color" of pride flags.
I see more and more sites and posts talking about the exact hex codes for the lesbian flag, or the right purple for the ace one, and how it should be more or less saturated and I just want to say: pride flags were meant to be sewn in your kitchen. To be spraypainted and to be recognised.
There are no "exact colors" of pride flags because you should do them with what you have ! Nobody should care if you use a crimson red instead of a cherry red or whatever ! Be free ! wave your colors ! The colors you have !
Insisting James Talarico is transgender in hopes of invoking the feverish transphobic hysteria they have been cultivating for years (he is cisgender), tweeting about how he will sacrifice you to Moloch (he is a Presbyterian who went to seminary school), repeatedly stating he is a vegan (he is not) and doing the old classic of calling him a Communist (wish that was true), republicans are fucking terrified of James Talarico and it is so fucking funny. Ken Paxton is a worse candidate and a worse person by every conceivable metric, he’s repeatedly committed fraud, he’s been a terrible attorney general. They cannot find anything to level the playing field in terms of terrible career track record or personal moral failing so they’re just lying. Not even good lies. They’re just going for what they assume will make the Texas public hate him. Transgender, demon worshipper, barbecue hater, commie. It is scary that the truth means nothing, it is scary that transgender identity is continuously weaponized for political gain, it is scary that we are still in the Red Scare and 1980s Satanic Panic bullshit but oh my God is it hilarious to see them spinning their wheels this hard.

Saw someone point out that they've already brought out the trans accusations and it's only May, they have 6 months to go and have no more runway to build any momentum on. They already broke out the big guns. They're gonna have to repeat the same talking points for half a year because they panicked and turned the dial up to 10 immediately. Anything else they accuse him of will be a step down.
Saw a great analysis that said even if Talarico can't win, the republican money machine is PISSED. They have to funnel a lot of money to this corrupt jackass Paxton instead of a solid incumbent in Texas, and that will bleed money away from races where they were hoping to flip seats. I hope we can flip this one, but even if we can't, we are a big old thorn in their sides, and that's always enjoyable.
