I know a lot of people started shipping Derek and stiles because of the pool scene, and yes, it's a very important scene between their relationship, and I love it, I do
That's not what sold them to me
It was Stiles comforting Derek (the hand of his solder oh so kind)
It was Derek's reaction in seeing Stiles in the elevator after waking up (like he was surprised, like he expected to be left there, a certainty, and waking to find him, stiles, there, for him, again, and oh, oh, a realization hitting him)
(It was Derek, searching for him for three days. Sitting in that hospital waiting room with Scott. Taking Stiles's bat in his hands so gently. Him looking at Void in Stiles's body and still, ready to stand between him and the barrel of a gun. Standing between him and the Oni. Stiles putting his name on the King, and wondering why. Protect the king. He's one step to checkmate. Chess isn't a Japanese fox's game. Derek looking at the chess board and why, why)
It was Derek dreaming of Stiles, of all people, when being abducted by her (he'll never escape her), confiding in him, trusting him (the only person who never left him, who never betrayed him)
It was Derek, dying, chest full of bullets and blood on his lips, telling Stiles to just go, we'll be right behind you, the hey, hey, voice so kind, confident in his lie, like to reassure him that yes, he'll be right behind him, he won't leave (they both knew, that it was a lie)
It was Stiles hesitating, looking back at him (he knew, he knew, leaving him felt wrong, but Scott needed his help). He was standing there, heart being pulled in two directions. Scott needed him, Derek would be fine, needed to be fine. He went. And yet. One last look.
It was Stiles looking at those initials, eyes softening. Those weren't Derek's initials, logically, he knew that. But fuck, they were there, and his heart skipped a bit, a soft smile appearing. His eyes, his mouth, his face, were so soft. Mind drifting to him.
(it was Derek, more than a decade later, still fixing that damn jeep. Your father had complicated feelings about that jeep.)
All of this? It might not make me certain of when Stiles fell for him, or if he ever did love him like that, if it was just a maybe, a what could have been , but it sure as hell telling me that Derek did. And let him go anyway.
That's what you do, right? When you love someone. You let them go.
yes, I'm a true believer of Derek falling first and HARD, how could he not? Stiles made him feel like a kid again. He stopped feeling like that since the fire. And yet, with stiles, he could be a real immature asshole. He could feel alive.
Those moments might have been far, might have been rare, but they're there, real and tangible. A proof of their relationship growing from reluctant allies to absolute trust. And trust for Derek is far more important than love. (And loving someone you trust? It was a beautiful feeling)
